E3note: Bethesda

I think the main goal for Bethesda Softworks at E3 this year is to highlight the variety of things that we have coming up, and while E3 isn’t by any means an exhaustive list of our products in development, I do think this year will give folks a better sense of that than previous years where we may have only focused on a key title, like Fallout 3. Folks have always been very aware and keen on our internally developed products, like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout 3, but we want to bring more attention to our expanding lineup of third-party titles this year and some of the talented developers we are working with.

I guess key to that message is the reveal of a title we have been working on with the folks at Splash Damage for some time now, called Brink. We felt it was the right time to announce this game and start talking about some of the new and different things this game is bringing to the shooter space. I think folks will be impressed with what Paul Wedgewood and his team have come up with.

Veterans of working with the idTech engine and known for their award-winning multiplayer gameplay on the Enemy Territory franchise, you’re talking about guys who know how to do great multiplayer and great visuals. So the goal with Brink was to build on that and expand the experience and do some unique things, whether it be through character development, or blurring the lines across between gameplay modes, or how you move through the environments and control your character. So we’ll be giving folks a look at Brink and how it does some new things in those areas.

On top of that we’ll be continuing to talk to folks about two other action games coming out this year, Rogue Warrior, being developed by Rebellion, and WET, being developed by A2M. Rogue Warrior is a brutal, personality-driven shooter that tells the story of Richard “Demo Dick” Marcinko, a former Navy SEAL and founder of SEAL Team Six, the Navy’s first counterterrorism unit. Mickey Rourke is lending his considerable talents to the project as the voice of Dick Marcinko, and will even be coming by the booth to sign some autographs and do some interviews for us.

WET is a highly-stylized third person shooter that seamlessly blends gun play, sword kills and over-the-top acrobatics to create the ultimate interactive action experience. You play “problem solver” Rubi Malone as the story (penned by acclaimed writer Duppy Demetrius, known for his work on the TV series “24”) leads you through environments around the world. Featuring an ironic mix of humor and violence, unique retro film visual treatment, and original 70’s inspired music, WET is a third- person shooter experience unlike any other.

Of course, focusing on third party titles doesn’t mean we’re done with things like Fallout 3. We’ll be showing off Point Lookout in the booth and letting folks have a chance to play the upcoming fourth DLC for Fallout 3. Point Lookout is the most open-ended DLC yet, and allows you to explore a huge, swampy wasteland any way you’d like. It’ll be coming out later this month to Xbox 360 and PC, and sometime later for PS3 (after we get the first three DLCs out for PS3 gamers).

We also continue to work with our sister company, Vir2L, and they’ll be showing off some of their titles in our booth as well, including Medieval Games, a fun party-style game coming to the Wii this year, as well as some of their iPhone properties in development.

So we’re very pleased with the lineup we have this year and are looking forward to showing everyone what Bethesda is up to. Best wishes to everyone for a great show.

I'm a huge BSoft fan since the days of Daggerfall, X-Car and SkyNet (kind of wished you guys still had the Terminator franchise rights!), so the new lineup is quite exciting.

Here's a silly idea: It would be innnnnnteresting to put an Elder Scrolls label on Medieval Games (or rename it) just to have that franchise on a Nintendo platform (of course, you're reading a comment from someone who's played Vir2L's N-Gage Elder Scrolls RPG a few times, so yup, I'm biased). Or perhaps dive into the DS hardware to craft an Elder Scrolls adventure (maybe tweak and use the Orcs & Elves or Mazes of Fate DS engine?). that is, if you can find a capable developer with the time to spare (and a Bethsoft writer/writers to work up a suitable storyline)...

Anyway - Wet looks quite interesting (to say the least), i'll need to see more on Brink, but it certainly sounds fantastic. Rogue Warrior will absolutely be on my watch list (when Rebellion clicks on a project, it's worth the ride) and of course, anything Fallout 3 related will get my eyes and ears perked up, so keep up the great work.

Nice going Bethesda.

I did not follow E3 up close, but I was curious to know if they said something about Fallout: New Vegas...
