E3note: Microsoft

This year at E3 we believe we’re genuinely changing the face of interactive entertainment. A bold statement that may be, but our conference this year irrefutably delivered the fact that we’re pushing the boundaries of interactivity way beyond those traditionally associated with video game consoles. By introducing controller-free gaming, we believe we’re heralding a revolutionary way for people to play games, and interact with each other.

It was interesting to hear Stephen Spielberg’s comment on project Natal yesterday – “This isn’t reinventing the wheel; there is no wheel” – reinforcing the fact that we’re leading a step-change in our industry to drive a new era of growth and innovation in home entertainment. We were blown away by some of the tech that was on display last night, and after a demonstration of what Lionhead came up with in the last couple of months, we’re really excited to see what our internal development teams and our 3rd party partners will start to produce on the platform now that dev kits have gone out.

But obviously it’s not all about Project Natal today. We’ve announced some great new additions to our Xbox LIVE service, along with some innovative partnerships, that will not only enhance the way people consume their digital entertainment, but continue to change people’s perception around the Xbox 360 console. In an age where digital social networking is such a large part of consumer’s lives, we feel we’ve raised the bar and blurred the lines between how consumers interact with our console and each other.

With the newly refreshed Zune Video channel, we’re bringing an incredible amount of new content to the LIVE service this Autumn, and easier ways to consume it. By offering instant, full 1080p HD streaming videos we’re making it easier to consume the movies you love – no disk, no download, no delay.

And then there’s Sky. Our commitment to providing the best entertainment gathers momentum with our newest partner, Sky. Now, for the first time on any console, you can watch live or on-demand TV from Sky, including Sky Sports, right from your Xbox 360. Never miss a moment of your favourite live TV shows, sports, movies and family-friendly entertainment across the UK and Ireland on Xbox LIVE. You can even share your TV experiences with up to seven friends with interactive Xbox LIVE Parties which we believe consumers will love.

We also know our consumers have a huge passion for music, and there’s some incredible music games out there and more coming soon like The Beatles Rock Band, DJ Hero, Lips Number One Hits to name but three. By bringing Last.fm to Xbox LIVE, again we’re delivering an enormous library of music content directly to where consumers spend the majority of their social time – the TV and the sofa. And on that note, it’s now even easier to connect and share with your friends through the newly announced, and seamlessly integrated, Facebook and Twitter partnerships.

But we cannot and never will forget about the games. Once again we’ve delivered on our ongoing commitment to provide consumers with the most compelling, creative and entertaining blockbuster games on Xbox 360. Core gamers are our heartland and there’s certainly enough diverse, immersive and visually stunning titles to provide something for everyone. We showed Halo 3 ODST running for the first time yesterday, and as you can saw the look and feel remains faithful to the Halo universe, whilst adding a ton of new features and gameplay experiences. After announcing the prequel Halo: Reach, we’re all really excited at the fact we’ll be playing it in 2010, and of course the invitation to the Halo: Reach Multiplayer Beta will come with Halo 3 ODST, so that’s great news for fans.

After seeing Forza Motorsport 3 in its full 60 FPS glory I’ve no doubt that Xbox 360 truly is the home of next-gen racing – the incredible photo-realistic graphics and real damage will make this the most immersive, accessible and technically stunning racing title on any console.  Easy to get into but the most incredible deep simulation for core driving fans, we think Forza 3 will be loved by everyone and resets the bar on what to expecting from driving games.

We’re thrilled that Alan Wake is (finally ;0)) on the way to release, and come spring 2010 I think we’ll all see the wait for this incredibly atmospheric title has been worth it. Splinter Cell: Conviction is looking awesome, and I think you’ll agree it’s come on leaps and bounds since we all last saw it – we’re really excited about the next iteration of the Sam Fisher saga coming exclusively to Xbox 360 this year. We know a huge number of people were particularly pleased to see the Crackdown 2 announce in there, so we’re looking forward to seeing more of that over the coming months.

We’ve been working with our thirdparty partners to also deliver some incredible games on our platform. It was great to see The Beatles: Rock Band open the conference last night, which really underlines our commitment to bring great music experiences to the platform, and it was a genuine surprise to all of us watching in the UK to see Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr up on stage during that section too! How cool are they still, eh? Modern Warfare 2 simply literally blew us all away, and with over 13 million Xbox LIVE users currently enjoying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, we’ve no doubt the MW 2 maps and content coming first to Xbox LIVE with will go down extremely well.

And of course, after both showcasing Final Fantasy XIII and announcing a Spring 2010 release date, and also announcing Valve’s stunning looking Left 4 Dead 2 for a November release, we’re bringing one of the most famous PlayStation franchises, Metal Gear Solid, to Xbox 360 for the first time. With such an amazing line up of first and thirdparty exclusives, and the best 3rd party game experiences available on our platform, we feel we truly have the best blockbuster games on Xbox 360 that everyone wants to play.

It’s been quite a show so far for us – innovative products that will drive growth to the game industry, showing 10 blockbuster games to the world for the first time, and underlining our stance as the complete entertainment console with the additions and enhancements to our LIVE service - we’ve absolutely cemented the fact that Xbox 360 truly does provide all of your entertainment in one box.

I thought the SKY deal was a great idea to start with but this will pave the way for those crooks at the BBC to demand a TV licence if you own a 360 now. Another reason to not answer the door!!!
