Is the "new" E3 really that bad?

Some big heads are still kicking E3 to the butt. Why? They didn't like the mega show at 2006. They didn't like last year's quiet bussines - media hotel meetings and they don't like this year's E3. They complain about various things, but what would they like?

E3 will never be the same like it was 5 years ago. Forget that. Maybe the future lies in Leipzig Games Convention, Tokyo Game Show and similar thing. I got the feeling, that E3 is becoming just a showcase of the big three conferences and then a little bit of some good games. Major developers are making their own shows like Ubidays, QuakeCon etc.

One of the biggest and most important developers for the PC is without a doubt Blizzard Entertainment. Were they at this year's E3? No. Why not? Why would they go there? They had very big show in Paris, France three weeks ago - Worldwide Invitational 2008, where they anounced Diablo 3. StarCraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King were playable there. And later this year, in october, they will held a huge BlizzCon in United States. What's the point of coming to the E3 for them? None. They gain huge momentum at their own huge shows, they don't need E3.

I just fear, that more and more developers will follow Blizzard as an example and couple years later, E3 will equal just the press conferences and a few non extra - huge - blockbuster games.

Short answer: Yes, it's really THAT bad.

Ever since the "convention" turned from about being for the fans and being for the news sites and exclusive groups, it will never be the same.

But perhaps there is a future for Edge somewhere in this turn of E3 events if it was done appropriately...

Adam I think your fear is correct, more of the developers will most likely jump out of e3 and do their own thing. Unless of course they bring back something similar to the years gone, but again that is probably not going to happen. Why spend $$ showing off your product when the press is just there, and not the thousands of venerable fans that showed when e3 was good. It doesn't make business sense to, host your own show, hell invite the public to get hands on, make them want your games!
