Welcome To The Forum

You may or may not have noticed that a link to the EDGE Forum has now appeared at the top of the page. You may or may not have been aware that there even was an EDGE Forum at all, most likely not.

So if you're considering clicking on that link, or already have and are a bit confused, perhaps this might answer a few questions.

First thing you need to know is that your EDGE Online account will not work on the forum. It's a different log in, so you will need to create an account on the forum

After you have registered, you won't be able to post right away. All registrations need to be approved before you can post. The people that approve registrations are the people who work on the magazine, so you may not get approved right away. All yahoo.co.uk email addresses are also blocked. The reason for this is that the forum is regularly targeted by spam bots, leading to a large amount of inappropriate material being posted. So please be patient, you shouldn't ever have to wait more than a day to be able to post.

The forums have been around for an awfully long time. So the thread you are thinking of making might already have been covered. Have a quick search before you make any new threads, to avoid duplicating.

This brings us to the next point. The search function. It doesn't. It's about as useful as God of War inside a Saturn. You're far better using Google if you want to search for a particular thread.

Images are able to be posted in messages, but not in sigs. If you want an avatar, it must be no larger than 80x80 pixels.

If you have any feedback about the forums, email; edgeforum@futurenet.co.uk

If you do decide to jump on over to the forum, happy posting! Just watch out for bears.

Anybody know if there's some kind of link to the blogs yet? I'm interested in reading peoples stuff, but I still can't find any.... Do I just have to add absolutely everybody to "my network", whatever that is?

Alex Walker's picture

Because I never check my emails, I've only just seen a message from the EDGE guys.

In it, we are promised some regular content round ups, which for those of us who like to read such things is excellent news.

Indeed.

That little 'From the forums' bit on the letters page has always confused me. Now it makes sence.

Yes to a blogs link. If i'd spend time surfing through blogs on any site it would be here. Its too difficult at the moment to find them.

The forum is too old for my tastes. Honestly Im happy posting my thoughts on this site as I honestly believe its easier to get into a decent disscussion here rather than have your post simply get lost in the forum.

I think the next thing EDGE should look into is the amount of UGC that is on this site; blogs are, as Alex has clearly demonstrated, a really good way of engaging and furthermore provoking disscussion about a particular subject. I'd rather see a link to the blogs on this site over twitter anyday.

michael_sylvain's picture

Funnily enough, I posted a blog about exactly that, and i know I'm not the only one. And short of posting a link, no one could find it...

UGC focus and a proper community/blog listing - they're what this site needs.

To be fair, the forum isn't heaving, and so if you make a good post, it won't get lost. People are willing to click back a few pages to see if the thread they posted in has had any replies.

Forum down! Forum down! Forum down!

etc

Just use the same name, as long as no-one else has had it, it will be available

I'd be interested in joining the forum provided it's not the usual PS3 vs 360 fanboy crap that plagues this website. That kinda thing was all right during the SNES vs Megadrive years when we were all kids, but we are all adults now, right?

Alex Walker's picture

It's not like that at all. A large part of that on here comes from people who have never heard of the magazine, and have been linked to here.

Those on the forum on the whole read the mag, or used to at one stage, so you get different points of view. I jumped there from Gamespot and have never looked back.

@Stealthbadger:

The forum was there before this website, 'tis old code me thinks.

They like to keep it retro. Worth signing up though, honest guv.

Web site profiles blocked, all yahoo email accounts blocked. You couldn't make this up. Seriously. I suggest that any higher education establishment looking for a prime example on how to muck up a plan to engage fan bases and/or customers via the internet for teaching of students, use The Edge as an example of how to make a mess of it. You have managed to tick all the wrong boxes with stunning levels of success. Needless to say I will not be jumping through this dog's dinner of a process to chat on the forum. I hope in the future common sense prevails.

Hell, at least it's a lot better than NeoGAF, who won't recognize any e-mail-adresses other than commercial ones/the one you got from your ISP, then the approval process usually takes 6+ months, seeing as the admins aren't all that active. On the other hand, NeoGAF has a healthy userbase consisting purely of human beings, not spambots.

Dark Soldier's picture

No disrespect, monsieur, but the forums have been around a long time, hence why web site profiles aren't linked (currently). Yahoo emails are blocked, primarily iirc, to stop spam accounts etc.

As far as calling it a 'dog's dinner of a process', erm, it takes about 30 seconds to sign up, and most who use the interweb regularly will have more than just a free Yahoo email account.

Nice to engage with you, m'lad.

StealthBadger's picture

Is there a particular reason why I can't use this account on the forums? Why do I need to register seperately for the edge website and the edge forums?

adkm1979's picture

As far as I know, it's down to the fact that our pals at Edge have only recently wrestled control of this site away from the NextGen folks. Given that they were, in many respects, quite seperate when the web-accounts were created, nobody linked in the forum accounts.

Rob_Jackson said, "Needless to say I will not be jumping through this dog's dinner of a process to chat on the forum." If his 'chat' is always in that tone, I for one am not disappointed by this.

Burn.

Well, the UI is no Escapist, but the forum users and topics of discussion are much better here.

Thank you Alex Walker!

I was always somewhat baffled at the lack of a link to the forum on the Edge site. Glad to see Future's magazine/online sections now are less partioned. Next: better links to profies and blogs on this site, please. There's plenty of good user-generated content around here, but it's just virtually impossible to find unless you already know it's there...

Alex Walker's picture

I would like a better way of finding good blogs. I saw one the other day from weeks ago, but someone had commented on it after the fact, and I happened to come online whilst it was one of the last 10 comments. But apparantly there is still more they want to do with EDGE Online, so perhaps this is something in the works.

As far as the lack of a link goes, it appears that it was simply assumed that it was more complicated than it actually was. I quote:

"In other news, I've made the brave and exciting step of actually looking into the backend of Edge Online and have found it embarrassingly easy to stick a link to the forum on the top menu. So, um, I did it."

NickgamertagO1's picture

Son of a gun, the forum is blocked at my work. I'm out as I post exclusively from work (as much as I like all you guys, I'm not taking up my personal time to post, unless I get to bash on Sony...lol).

... or die?

Veiled threats never work (well, they do with an envelope stuffed with cash.

If I can spare the 30 seconds to sign up and think up a new profile name (I'm about out of them), I just may join the collective 'Us"...
