Developers wanted kids to be involved in the action and designed these open-air platform areas to be the equivalent of traditional MMO dungeons.
Coming this fall, Cartoon Network Universe: FusionFall will be the first AAA, browser-based MMOG/platformer hybrid for kids.
In addition to more than 50 characters culled from popular Cartoon Network titles like Ben 10 and The PowerPuff Girls, FusionFall features more than 60 playable zones, which includes familiar locations from the shows. Targeted to kids, age 8-14, the game will be subscription-based, but there will be a huge free-to-play area.
In FusionFall, kids fight to save the Cartoon Network universe from the corrupting forces of Planet Fusion. Monsters and evil doppelgangers of Cartoon Network characters haunt areas infected by Planet Fusion. When kids fight the doppelgangers, they receive "Nanos" - miniaturized versions of favorite Cartoon Network characters. These Nanos allow players to gain special abilities and they have a choice of three abilities for each Nano. Up to 36 Nanos can be collected, but only three Nanos can be used at one time.
Both Nanos and monsters are composed of "fusion matter." Depending on the particular type of
"fusion matter" in the monster, some Nanos are more effective than others in defeating the monster. However, that may entail giving up on a preferred special ability for a while.
Because all players can collect Nanos, there are no specified classes. Special abilities can be swapped at will. In addition, stats are simplified. Only three wearable items affect stats. The rest are for personalization reasons. Weapons consists of items like turkey legs or gumball bazookas.
Because it is a platformer, players are encouraged to keep moving and jumping. The designers didn't want "sandwich combat," whereby players can click on a mob and engage in auto mode, go get a sandwich, and come back. They wanted kids to be involved in the action and designed these open-air platform areas to be the equivalent of traditional MMO dungeons.
Although the different shows have different art styles, they have been unified into an anime style that appeals to the age group. Characters like the Powerpuff Girls have been "aged-up" to fit the universe. Because Planet Fusion fuses with the environment, the different monsters reflect their origins. Some look like they were created from lava rocks while others are leafy.
Child-safe, there will be options to limit chat functions. There is a timer built into the game. After a set time, a player will only be able to earn half as much as before and after longer period of time, the player will earn nothing.
In the future, newer Cartoon Network properties will be integrated into the game for additional Nanos, locations, and quests. An open beta of the game is expected soon.
