Edge Games Index

Mass Effect 2 and Modern Warfare 2 hold on to keep BioShock 2 at bay, while Bayonetta makes a surprising comeback.

Every week, the Edge Games Index, produced in association with Brandwatch, rates games according to the volume of positive and negative buzz they're inspiring on the web.

Each chart allows you to rank the list by the overall quantity of buzz about each title, by the quantity of positive or negative buzz, and by the percentage of positive or negative buzz. To explain the numbers you’ll see on the charts, the number alongside the volume of responses represents the absolute number of mentions the game in question has had, while the ‘last week’ column represents a game’s position in relation to the others on the chart seven days ago.

The data is compiled by brand intelligence specialist Brandwatch. To find out how its system works, see our explanation.

UK Chart February 13

BioShock 2 may have taken the top spot for sales, but its smaller world and straighter story can’t match reigning hot topic Mass Effect 2, even if interest in BioWare’s game has slumped by around a third. Modern Warfare 2 holds the flank in second, keeping the return of Rapture at three.

Clearly a lady who enjoys multiple climaxes, Bayonetta leapfrogs the stable (but still unremarkable) buzz for EA’s Dante’s Inferno, returning from outside the top ten to fourth place. Massively multiplayer FPS MAG, meanwhile, fails in its mission to set the world on fire, disappearing from this week’s chart. A shame: it was one of last week’s most positive titles.

Taking its place here is Wii Sports Resort (57 per cent), with BioShock 2 entering at a respectable fourth with 51 per cent. The long hard road continues for Dante’s Inferno, the game climbing to seventh with exactly half-positive buzz. Surprisingly, Bayonetta hits the negative top spot with 16 per cent, dethroning the ever-unpopular Just Dance (don’t worry, haters, it’s still at number three). Second place goes to Mass Effect 2, though whether that’s because of un-removable DLC helmets, absent vehicles or reduced gay sex is unknown.
