th in revenue and has a strong operating profit, both are down year-on-year with operating profit dropping almost 25% in FY08.
Square-Enix has focused its offline game publishing business on handheld systems in the past year, with almost all games under the Final Fantasy brand. On the Nintendo DS the company published Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings and Final Fantasy IV (in Japan only, so far). Sony's PSP received Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, Final Fantasy I Anniversary Edition, Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.
In its online business, Square-Enix continues to operate its Final Fantasy XI massively multiplayer online role-playing game which currently has approximately 500,000 paying subscribers. Square-Enix is also pushing its Final Fantasy titles onto mobile phones.
All three segments – offline, online, and mobile – have experienced diminished revenues in the past year. Going forward, Square-Enix will look to games like Final Fantasy XIII for the PlayStation 3 and Infinite Undiscovery on the Xbox 360 to boost it revenues – and hopefully it profits.
We should mention the absence of a notable publisher, namely LucasArts. In the work above, we have included only publicly traded companies. While LucasArts is clearly a big player, they are a private company. Therefore, their data is not public and we have declined to speculate on their finances.
