13. Capcom

FY08 Revenue: $521M, +40% (Rank: 15)
FY08 Profit/Loss: $117M (Rank: 9)
Titles in Global Top 100: 3 (Rank: 9)
Units in Global Top 100: 2.5M (Rank: 13)
Review Average: 74% (Rank: 3)

Explanation of Ranking: Capcom's home videogame revenues are not in the same league as EA or even Take-Two, but it is 15th in revenue with strong operating profits. Moreover, Capcom's revenues grew at an impressive 40% from FY07 while its operating profit grew 71%.

Compared to huge publishers like EA and Activision, Capcom's $0.5 billion revenue from its home videogames division seems much more modest. However, it controls a staggering number of icons from the industry – Mega Man, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil – and appears to be managing some of them very effectively.

Just in the past year Capcom repackaged its Resident Evil 4 for Nintendo's Wii and sold over a million copies worldwide. Within the same franchise, Capcom sold over a million copies of Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. Its Monster Hunter Freedom 2 sold over 2 million units on the PSP, a system often noted for its inability to sell even good software.

Simultaneously Capcom is making titles for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, including Lost Planet and Devil May Cry 4, and leading the way in games distributed only online, such as Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix and Rocketmen: Axis of Evil. Further, Capcom has gradually rolled out new properties like Okami, God Hand and Zack & Wiki, although the commercial success of these games has been mixed.

Later this year Capcom will be updating two more of its franchises for the HD consoles with Bionic Commando and Street Fighter IV, as well as launching a new property, Dark Void.

We should mention the absence of a notable publisher, namely LucasArts. In the work above, we have included only publicly traded companies. While LucasArts is clearly a big player, they are a private company. Therefore, their data is not public and we have declined to speculate on their finances.
