GAMING’S TOP 50 JOURNALISTS

Brandon Sheffield
Editor, Insert Credit

Brandon Sheffield is co-founder of, and incredibly slow decision maker for insertcredit.com, for better or for worse one of the pioneering sites for new game journalism. He’s currently the features editor at Game Developer magazine, an industry publication for developers (of games, oddly!). He has somehow almost completely avoided writing for the mainstream consumer press, but has worked – credited or otherwise – on a few books.

Chris Slate
Editor-in-chief, PSM

Chris Slate is editor-in-chief of the Future US publication PSM: Independent PlayStation Magazine, a title that he launched nine years ago in 1997. He was previously editor-in-chief of Ultra Game Players, a multi-format videogame magazine, after having worked on other gaming publications such as the original Game Player’s and Game Player’s Guide to Nintendo Games. All told, he has spent the past 17 years working on print magazines, websites, discs, and in other mediums for gaming’s enthusiast press.

Luke Smith
News Editor, 1up

Luke Smith is 1UP.com’s news editor. He appears each week on the 1UP Yours podcast and frequently on the 1UP Show. After graduating from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 2003, Smith toiled in the Midwest at a twice-weekly paper writing about arts, culture and local plays (seriously) before a year-long penance as the managing editor for an alt-weekly, Real Detroit Weekly. In September of 2005, Smith bolted to the Internet to write for Gawker’s snarky game-focused newsblog Kotaku. He worked there until February of 2006, when he joined 1UP.com.

Dean Takahashi

Dean Takahashi is a staff writer in the business section of the San Jose Mercury News and author of The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft’s Next-Generation Video Game Console, launched in May 2006. He also wrote Opening the Xbox: Inside Microsoft’s Plan to Unleash an Entertainment Revolution. He currently writes about semiconductor chips, video games and Microsoft for the newspaper of Silicon Valley. He podcasts and blogs on video games for the Mercury News via Dean & Nooch on Gaming.

Clive Thompson writes the biweekly “Games Without Frontiers” column for Wired News, and is a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine.
