Next-Gen People: Mathieu Ferland

Next-Gen People: Mathieu Ferland

Splinter Cell Double Agent senior producer Matthieu Ferland answers Next-Gen’s weekly questionnaire…

I’m currently working on …

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent. Sam Fisher is back. Unfortunately, very bad things are happening in his personal life … He has nothing to lose and decides to accept the most dangerous mission of his life.  It’s a very cool and surprising game!

My favorite part of the working day is …

Morning coffee. When I get in the office in the morning, I start by reading all e-mails in order to have a rough idea about the kind of day I will have. Having my morning coffee means that I have set a rough plan for the day, even if I get my coffee late in the morning sometimes. I relax for few seconds and get the boost needed to move on.

The three brands that I most adore are …

If we’re talking about games, my recurrent favorites are Rainbow Six, Mario Party and NHL 2K. Rainbow Six provide a great solo experience with good team AI and a solid multiplayer. Mario Party is the kind of “no thinking” game I like to play with a bunch of friends before or during a party … and NHL 2K, simply because hockey is my favorite sport.

When I was 12 years old I most loved to …

Play a lot of sports: skateboard, skiing, swimming, mountain biking and obviously: hockey, my favorite sport. I’ve been playing hockey since I was 4-years-old and I’m still playing. Besides sports I was probably playing “Punch Out” beating Mike Tyson on my NES at that time.

On an average Saturday afternoon I…

Play outside with my young daughter: swimming in the pool, help her driving her little kid-car … While she’s having her nap, I’ll checkout latest games on Live Arcade or jam on my guitar.

My favorite city in the world is…

Seville, Spain. The city is beautiful, the night life is good, girls are pretty, food is fantastic and the traditional “Feria party” seems to last forever. I had great time there. Otherwise, I love Montreal because it offers tones of diversity in both the Summer and the Winter.

The person in history I’d probably describe as my hero is…

Wayne Gretzky: he did break all NHL records and has changed the game forever. Respect the man!

The piece of music that moves me most is…

Any song from DJ Champion & the G Strings.  Very good stuff.

The game I wish I’d created is …

I’ve spent so much time playing my very first mini arcade “Galaxian.” I still have it on my desk in the office. I’ve been beating the counter many times. It is now broken … I was unfortunately too young the time to create this game, but these old days were a great period for game development.

The sort of movie I like to watch is…

Depends on the mood I’m in … but I like to watch techno-thrillers most of the time. Also, I like to re-watch old movies while working on my laptop. Classics like: “Mars Attacks,” “Back to the Future,” or even “Slap Shot” with Paul Newman.

On the beach, I like to read…

Quick reading men’s magazines: cars, sports, games and women. Drinking an apple martini at the same time is the best. I keep more serious reading for the evenings.

My home is…

The South Shore of Montreal. I really like my place. It’s a simple, quiet area to rest and to enjoy the pool and backyard. There is also a little natural woods nearby where rabbits and even deer will sometimes give us a quick visit.

My favorite sports team is…

NHL – the Montreal Canadians. I’m a big, big fan. Even if I used to be a Quebec Nordiques fan.

In my professional life, the achievement that I’m most proud of is…

I worked two years in Morocco and created the very first game made in Africa. I’m also (obviously) very proud of Splinter Cell creations generally speaking.

And in my personal life, it’s…

My wife is fantastic and my daughter lovely. I’m also proud of maintaining long time friendships with many old pals of mine.
