Resident Evil
Hell dogs in the hallway
1996

Walking in on the first zombie triggered one of gaming’s most memorable cut scenes, but it was the hell dogs jumping through the window early in the game that burnt into gamers’ brains what Resident Evil stands for—being scared shitless.

Tomb Raider
Surprise: a T-rex
1996

You’re roaming around a valley, blasting away smaller velociraptor-like dinosaurs—no problem. Then their 20-foot relative comes out of the shadows. Your only choice? Shoot and run. (Pic from remake Tomb Raider Anniversary.)

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The Inverted Castle
1997

Symphony seems like it comes to a cruel end when Alucard has to battle Richter. But if the player does it the right way, Richter can be saved and the inverted castle unlocked. The fact that this excellent game, instead of ending, became twice as long ensured it instant classic status in the hearts of many frugal gamers.

Fallout
The Glow
1997

The highly radioactive area known as “The Glow” was an exercise in “show don’t tell” storytelling, which Black Isle Studios executed masterfully. Some fans revere The Glow as the best part of the overall series. (Pic courtesy nma-fallout.com forums.)

Final Fantasy VII
Aeris’ death

When talking about “games that make you cry,” Final Fantasy VII and the death of Aeris always come up. The tragedy is beautifully and effectively portrayed by mingling powerful imagery with a tear-jerking score.

snappyT's picture

here are some moments that I feel should have made that list, plus are just a few good memories of mine.

First:
totally forgot Big Red One. Half-way through the very last level, good ol' Brooklyn (who everybody had grown to love by then) has to plant a charge on a barbed wire fence. He goes down the hill, ironically saying 'I think ill actually make it home from this lousy war.' five seconds later, nerd-dude screams 'Brooklyn!!!!' and mortar fire coming out of nowhere suddenly blasts your fellow soldier 20 feet into the air. Just like that, your favorite BIA is lying five feet away from you, unmoving, and nobody mentions him for the rest of the game. A very heart-wrenching moment ='( that was apparently overlooked.

Second:
Jak III; Jak and Dax are makin fun of monk dude, prompting him to say 'this isnt a game!!" prompting THEM to look at each other and then stare at your screen like what the crap's he talkin about. lol a very subtle break in the forth wall, but still pretty darn funny xD

Third:
Rock Band II: the thrill of hooking up that smoke machine & strobe light for the first time just before playing 'Let There Be Rock' and then being completely enguled in smoke as soon as the song starts. If you were lucky enough to have all four people playing when you did (as I was) there's really nothing better. =D

Fourth:
Bad Company; immidiately after you crash 5 minutes into the game:
Sweetwater: "new guys dead...already? darn. I was just about to learn his name."
Haggard: "think his name was, ah...Joe! usually is."
rofl xD for those who havent played the game, pretty much all of it is gut-busting hilarious.

Fifth (SPOILER):
another Bad Company moment, when Sarge gets the call that the Army has left you to die deep inside enemy lines after just pulling off a mission for them. If there ever was a feeling where the crap hits the fan, you can pretty much shower in it here.

Sixth:
Rock Band (first one); when that piece-of-crap foot pedal finally goes out just about the same time the red pad does. A very memorable moment, though not nessicarily a good one.

Seventh:
Catching your first Pokemon. 'nuf said. =)
Im awe-struck this one did not make the list.

Eight (SPOILER):
Making that impossible jump in Johnson's Warthog to the Pelican at the climax of Halo 3, with the entire new Halo going up in flames right behind you and your best friend and/or lil bro sayin 'DUDE, there's no way you'll make that!' . Amazing ending to an amazing game.

Ninth:
Walking out of the Imperial Sewers for the first time in Oblivion (one of the greatest RPG's ever made, period), and realizing that you are indeed a very small part of a very big world.

Tenth:
Falling through that darned trap door in Mario 64.
Yep, that one where your running to the picture of Peach, which slowly changes to Bowser the closer you get to it. JUST when it starts to hit you that there's no way you could have finished the game in less than an hour and that that is NOT the picture you were running at 10 seconds ago, you are swallowed up by a nice hole in the floor to Bowser's own little slice of hell. (or at least, one of many slices of hell)

and last (SPOILER):
Both of the Kingdom Hearts endings, where in I and II where Sora is seperated and then rejoined with Kairi, respectively, with the beautiful themes playing in the background. even though this really isn't that much of a spoiler, and even though pretty much the entire games are touching, unless you are completely heartless they WILL make you burst into tears.

please do not hesitate to reply.

Wizards and Warriors, heading to the first dungeon at night with a monitor that was so bad I could barely see past my player character's nose, when a skeleton mage rises out of the darkness and summons a bunch more skeletons who chase my newbie band of adventurers fighting for their lives(a couple didn't make it) in chaos all the way back to the town that burped us out an hour earlier.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, Stepping out onto the deck of the boat at the beginning and hearing the haunting call of the Silt Strider nearby, seeing the water ripple in the sunshine, some of the NPCs idle comments; especially the Altmers, 'I don't recall using teleportation, but there I was... alone... naked.' priceless!

Super Mario: Realizing that the ability to break out the bricks and walk up by the score, breaking the fourth wall effectively, wasn't an accident when you get to the
secret pipes room. Amazing. Totally changed my perception of what games could be.

Guantlet: The first time you hear, "Elf needs food badly" and feeling very invested, not just from a scoring standpoint, to keep him alive.

Thief TDP " Did you think those ancient phrases were mere words man fool, look at me, I am the woodsie lord, the trickser of legend!" Enough said!

Laerfan's picture

The Darth Revan moment in KOTOR is probably the most impressive moment in games for me. The movie series that practically created the "twist" as we know it, with the Luke and Darth Vader idea, has done it again in games to perhaps the same level of importance and shock.

And there's no forgetting the strippers in Duke Nukem 3D.

Resident Evil has loads of "Oh My God" moments throughout the series. I remember being gobsmacked by William Birkin's growth and mutation, so terrifying in the final stage of Resident Evil 2. The snake in the attic moment always makes me approach my attic with caution every time. Being trapped in the house in the first village of Resident Evil 4 only to see a chainsaw wielding lunatic approach from across the square and the villagers prop up ladders to the upper windows was the moment when I realised that RE4 would change my perception of games forever.

But the 2 most amazing RE moments are both in RE2. First is when Mr. X smashed through the wall and cornered you despite you truly believing you were safe because surely no enemy can come through the walls! Second is Mr. X again, when you see him on the security camera that's looking at the way you entered that tiny little control room!

Another great one is in Morrowind, approaching the Silt Strider with EXTREME caution, wondering how to tackle an enemy so big so early in the game, then realising that it's the local public transport made me laugh hysterically for feeling so silly!

There are countless others but the one I'll close on is in Shining Force 3 on the Sega Saturn, when Galm appeared from nowhere and "kills" Julian. This was a real shock, reminiscent of CoD4's moment when a main character dies, picked in this feature, but ten years before and probably enducing a moment of realisation of how weak the player really is equal to that strike in Infinity Ward's classic.

Holy Crap! where do I Begin?
Oblivion: Walking around Cyrodiil for the first time, interacting with the people and entering the stores and shops, knowing that one day i would be able to do anything i wanted and be able to PWN anyone in the game. Also, realizing how much depth was put into every single storyline and how they each branched out into a rediculous system of unrecountable events and countless options. Oh, and realizing that there was a Difficulty setting and finally finding out that i had almost beaten the game on the 8th difficulty setting and thinking to myself "HOLY CRAP!! no wonder this was hard!"

Halo 1, 2 & 3: leading Marines through Halo and actually trying to keep my marines alive due to how these two single marines had made it through the entire level with me, which were the mexican and the australian dudes.
Hosting Live parties with my step bros and PWNing everyone there. It is an awesome feeling to know that everyone wanted you on their team, and if you werent on their team, they would bitch. (those of you who have been there, know). For those of you who havent, Its like being Micheal Jordan in a playground with a bunch of 12 year olds.

the part of MGS1 where you're in the Elevator and the invisible soldiers are there with you. I played this at 2 a.m., i was alone and i was the only one awake, I was about 10 years old and when Otacon started freaking out and sounding nervous (that freaky music began playing) on the Codec about some camoflage being stolen, and that there was about 400 lbs on the Elevator scale, i was like "Holy Sh*t, whats gonna happen?!?!?!" Probably one of the scariest moments in gaming for me.

Doom 3: that part in the beginnng where you can hear the mechanic in the pipe scream and you go to check and that demon pops out at the perfect time, nearly shit myself. I was playing and my cousin and little bro were in the room, it was daylite out side and we all jumped at it. We soon decided to just turn it off and go play basketball.

Half-Life 2: getting the Gravity Gun. Period. Ravenholm was not really scary, but sort of an annoying part of the game after you complete it. Somehow grabbing Father Gregori's shotgun on the Xbox version, (the first Xbox, Crap version)

Buying the Orange Box.

GTA IV online Multiplayer, If you havent played it, play it. if you dont have the game, go buy it and play it online, trust me, its worse than coke. I was addicted.

playing G-Mod and learning how to use all the tools.

MGS2: after the Tanker mission, when Raiden's intro movie begins playing, I was seriously confused. "Who the F*ck is this guy? young snake? snake after the Tanker incident? why is the hair white? why is this guy not on the game case or even mentioned on the back cover. Holy Crap!! its the Colonel from the First game!!!" and then finding out it wasnt him, just a robot. seeing Vamp appear time after time of seeing him die. after Olga died, i was like "damn. I was actually starting to like her". watching the entire ending soliloquy from snake. Then seeing my first rank was a Doberman, "WTF?!?! is that good?!? Bad!?!?! how do i know!?!?!"

GTA3: driving around the city for the first time and thinking "WOW, this is amazing, an entire City on a disk, with people and cars and everything"

Pwning level 6 and 7 guys in my FIRST ever HALO 3 match online.

being stupid enough to actually think i would get asked for an ID at some crap gamestore when purchasing DOAX beach volleyball. I was like 12 and spent about an hour walking around the store working up the nerve to go and pay for it. then the cashier gives me this look and i just abrubtly say "its for my brother, its his birthday" and grabbing the game and almost running out of the store.

Realizing how much MORE skill is needed to PWN on PC shooters like CSS and HL2DM than Halo 3 and CoD4.

Anyone up for a Halo 3 multiplayer round or two? gamertag; "Snathious"
if you add me, tell me you saw me from Edge and i will happily add you.

Taking it back to Call of Duty 4... I started the game, and I was puzzled... absolutely puzzled. Like "That dude just hit me in the head and jammed me into a car, wtf" and my first thoughts were that someone is going to rescue me or something. Then you're driving through the city, which seems alive, there was a kid spray painting the wall and just jet when he saw us coming. Once get to our destination, they take you out of the car, again, knockin you right out. And all this time, you've had the freedom to actually look around. Then when you're finally strapped to that pole. You're looking around, still absolutely clueless. One thing you feel, is that you're completely helpless, you seriously feel like youre strapped to that pole. He hands him the golden Desert Eagle and the guy just walks up to you without any remorse... and kills you.... I was like "............??????". And that's when the game picks up. Also, I've found the end of the game to be absolutely amazing as well, on that bridge. And at that point, Price's death was relevant for about 1 second... he's dead, ok, but Holy Sh*t this dude's gonna do me next, and he just wakes up, tosses you that gun, and I remember for me, it was 2 perfectly placed headshots in split seconds..... goose bumps on my skin even when I type this.

I'll add a couple too.
Unreal, when you're at the end of a long hallway and you see the lights go out one by one, towards you, then when it's all dark you hear sounds of monsters in front of you, on your only way back.

Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines, the first visit to the haunted house is stuck in my mind.
It starts to build the haunted atmosphere already when you reach the entrance and the light explodes and never lets go. (very well executed sequence all the way, very scary)

The one aspect that made the Psycho Mantis encounter memorable for me was how it broke the 4th wall and communicated directly to the player. Revolver Ocelot did this as well during the interrogation sequence when he dissuades the player not to activate auto-fire function on the controller.

gamerdad's picture

Well said Matthew - about breaking the 4th Wall. It totally freaks you out when Psycho Mantis tells you that you are cautious and often save the game. Or when he tells you that you like playing other Konami games. Also mind blowing when he moves (rumbles) your controller.

Another great aspect of the Psycho Mantis battle is figuring it out yourself. When he talks about reading your mind, when he breaks that 4th wall and interacts with the real world, when he interacts with your memory card and controller, you get the logical but still crazy idea of swapping controller ports. You swap controller ports and he can no longer "read your mind". That truly is an Oh My God moment, especially since that type of real word interaction had never been seen before.

Another breaking the 4th wall moment in that game is when Otacon refers to a codec frequency number that can only be found on the back of the game CD case. He actually says it's on the back of the game case! Memorable stuff!

I forgot about the significance of that scene when I first played it. I've only finished Metal Gear 1 (before I made the jump to xbox) and I still remember that night. I was in tech school (air force's version of college sorta) and I was living off base waiting for my wife to move out there. I had the apartment to myself and was completely alone. I had been playing Metal Gear in marathon sessions up to that point. Well, late at night I was kinda in that semi conscience stage when you're so into the game that you don't really notice your surroundings too much. Well, upon being asked to set my controller down, I was thinking whatever, this is lame. So I set it down on my glass coffe table (remember, it was like 1am, pitch black in my apartment, and I was completely alone) and when the noise of the controller rattling the glass AND MOVING I freaked out and for a split second Mantis actually had me believe he just moved my controller. Very clever of Konami that scene.

"To this list I would add the Cradle from Thief 3. The whole first half of that level had no enemies in it at all -- and yet I CRAWLED through it"

Hell yes. Then came those creepy, seemingly invincible guys (except for flash grenades - spoiler btw :)

Some other unforgettable moments, off the top of my head:
Fighting "shoulder to shoulder" with the helicopter in Resident Evil 4.
The cursed Spaniards in Uncharted.
A sinister bug in Thief: The Dark Project, when Ramirez just came through the door!
Sneaking alone behind enemy lines in Operation Flashpoint.
The AI in Rez throwing weird sentences at you.
Space Channel 5 - the whole game!
The ending of Ace Attorney 3 (not gonna spoil it for you ;)
The first appearance of two (!) hell knights in Doom 3.
The appearance of the Flood in Halo.
The solo level with King Alric in Myth: The Fallen Lords.
The first outdoor moments in Outcast.
The "demo level" of Wheel of Time.
etc. etc.

yorgle12's picture

To this list I would add the Cradle from Thief 3.

The whole first half of that level had no enemies in it at all -- and yet I CRAWLED through it, expecting to be bludgeoned from behind at every corner. Masterpiece.

NickgamertagO1's picture

Super Metroid's ending when the final boss whoops your ass and the baby metroid from the beginning swoops in and sucks the life out of your adversary. Then transfer the life it took from the boss into you when you're used to the only thing metroids do to you when they're on your head is kill you, to see one saving you was very memorable, but it didn't end there. What you thought to be a dead boss was just a near-dead one. The boss stands up and starts blasting the metroid that's on your body, but the metroid doesn't let go, it stays there continuing to transfer health to you while getting blasted to eventually die while protecting you and its remains spill over you like dust. Then you stand up like a super bad ass and just destroy the boss. The feeling of sadness from the metroid's sacrifice and your feeling of redemption after defeating the boss has stayed with me and has not been duplicated by any game since and I don't know if it ever will.

This category is large enough you could get more specific and make multiple lists.

Like "Most horrifying videogame experiences"
N64, Mario drowns

that's a different sort of 'OMG!' than MGS2's "what's going onnn!?" or FF7's "_____ DIES"

ManicMiner's picture

A couple of memorable moments: Having to climb down the hole in the underground prison in SIlent Hill 2, I still feel like a part of me is stuck there. Abe's Exoddus, discovering exploding farts is one thing, but being able to possess them and fly them around? Wow. Also in Oddworld, one third of the way through Stranger's Wrath where the game simply explodes and you find out who you really are. It's quite bizarre and sad when you realise that some of your best memories are virtual....

SaintJude's picture

I cannot believe noone mentioned Halo CE! Those who have played Halo CE, the opening to the Silent Cartographer was manic. It was the first and possibly the last time I experienced such a rush from leading a charge. I don't know about anyone else but I went a little sugar-high, ADHD there - tossing grenades all over the place, emptying entire clips into Elites and charging in with melee - all with a maniacal grin on my face. Halo was my first Xbox game and that moment made me realise just how good things could be.

Incidentally, I had my 'Oh my God, look at the grass. Look at the f*ckin' grass!' moment on the very same level.

Brendan_Keogh's picture

I bought an xbox after playing the opening of Silent Cartographer at my friend's house :)

Other Halo moments would include bein introduced to the Flood. Like you're fighting typical aliens.. then holy crap, space-zombies!!!1!

Or doing your first ever Warthog jump over the entire length of Silent Cartographer...

Metal Gear Solid 1: Getting the 3 key cards only to find out you'e been doing Liquid's dirty work for him.

Grand Theft Auto 3: Lining up all those cars and jumping precariously to get to the other side of a wall to see if an elusive hiden package was there.. only to find a sign saying "You weren't suppose to be able to get here."

Halflife: Every singly headcrap in an airvent.

Super Star Wars: The landspeeder level.

Starfox: a third dimension!!!!

In line with MGS2 and playing as Raiden, for me, would be first having to play as the Arbiter in Halo2. Until the cutscene ended and i was actually in the arbiters head, I didn't believe it.

Standing on the windmill in ICO and just looking at.... everything.

burnblue's picture

I registered just to say this: One of my most recent OMG moments definitely had to be falling upside down in Mario Galaxy. Come on, don't tell me no one else ranks that up there with the best of moments..

NickgamertagO1's picture

Sabrewulf's picture

I'm glad Ocarina of Time was in there, but the most jaw-dropping moment in that game had to be leaving Kokiri forest for the first time and after the annoying conversation with the owl you truly appreciate the magnitude of the game and the sprawling landscape of Hyrule Field it was enormous and you could wander round for ages, simply mind -blowing!

Bryan.Vehonsky's picture

Good list, all in all a fine collection of moment. Bioshock definitely ranks highly on the list for me personally, as does Call of Duty 4 for being gutsy enough to really make the player question what was going to happen to their characters. No one seemed safe from that point on, and it was proven again when Captain Price suffers an equally tragic fate on the bridge at the game's conclusion

gmango's picture

I'm surprised that System Shock isnt in this list.

That game has permanently set my heart rate to an average of 80bpm. Shodan is still, to this day, the best video game villain! the way she evolved through the course of the game and grows to taunt you all the way to the end.

once you installed the game and did a sound test to check that all is working well the instalation plays an audio file from the game that says:
"look at you hacker.. a pathetic creature of meat and bones panting and sweating as you run through my corridors, how can you challenge a perfect immortal machine"
I had soiled myself before I even started the game.

Agro sacrificing himself for you was an emotional moment, but my true OMG moment during SotC was when i Stood up on Agro, and made the jump onto the 13th Colossi's wing on my first shot, i jumped off the couch and screamed out! Oh My God!!! Brilliant
( ever since its taken me multiple attempts ) also, seeing Agro taking a drink from an oasis while i hunted a lizard was another amazing moment, such attention to detail!

Yes, absolutely there were plenty of moments in SotC. My personal favorite was being chased by the giant sandworm and having to shoot him in the eye from horseback.

I am going to pitch in with one. Because gaming was almost totally about innovations in its early years, the writers of this feature steered clear of the classic arcade era. But I'd like to recount the absolute amazement I felt when playing Defender for the first time. It wasn't just the Smart Bomb (I'd been told about this previously and had thought it a lie); it was the moment the screen goes completely nuts after you lose the last pod, and all the enemies turn mutant making the game almost impossible to beat. Awesome moment.
