Out Now: E215
Introducing our latest issue, featuring LittleBigPlanet 2, Media Molecule’s retools for the next generation of Play, Create, Share.
Released to subscribers and available in UK shops now, the issue features a first look at the follow-up to the first flowering of the user-generated revolution on consoles. And though LBP2 will stay true to all of Sackboy’s roots, the new toys with which he’ll be getting to play are little short of astounding.
The upshot? Technical director Alex Evans tells us, LittleBigPlanet 2 is "no longer about making levels, it’s about making games".
Elsewhere in the issue, we take a look at Bulletstorm, the first fruits of Painkiller-maker People Can Fly’s relationship with Epic. Guess what? Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski tells us they’re "going to make this game kick-ass," and with it about big guns and booting enemies in the nuts, there’s every chance they will.
We went to (and got stuck in – thanks, Iceland) Denmark seeing Playdead Studios’ remarkable Limbo, a puzzle platformer with a startling black and white aesthetic, and speak to Bungie about their experiences making Halo: Combat Evolved as part of our ongoing series on our games of the last decade.
We also met Shigeru Miyamoto to talk about his career to date and Nintendo’s future and Sony Online Entertainment head John Smedley about making Everquest, and spent a sleepless 48 hours eating pizza and drinking Coke for X48, Microsoft’s XNA game jam competition to understand what it takes a student to make a game in two days, and what that means for Xbox.
Other highlights: we attend Dofus and Wakfu maker Ankama’s Convention 5, talk to Jun Takeuchi about Lost Planet 2 and speak to independent developers about funding game projects through Get In The Game.
Previewed Halo: Reach, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Vanquish, APB, ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, Scribblenauts 2, Frozen Synapse, Sniper: Ghost Warrior, Solarobo, FlingSmash and Xenoblade.
Reviewed Super Mario Galaxy 2, Alan Wake, Lost Planet 2, Split Second: Velocity, Cave Story, WarioWare: Do It Yourself, Nier, Skate 3, Lead And Gold: Gangs Of The Wild West, The Scourge Project: Episodes 1 & 2, What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord? 2, 3D Dot Game Heroes and The Whispered World.
