Thanks to all who entered our Scribblenauts competition – and congratulations to our three lucky winners. So how did they do it?
Shinibi, the overall winner of a set of Edge 200 postcards, a copy of the game and some Scribblenauts swag, was the first to come up with the bright idea of using a grappling hook. Their answer was to “grapple steel above starite via "grappling hook", "fire" to burn Maxwell's rope, and "termites" to eat the cage. Starite get?” Starite get indeed, even though we thought the ending was a bit suspect:
NB, we used a monocle to remove the hat as our grabbing DS has a slightly sluggish touchscreen – it is possible to remove the hat without using any items.
The runner up, Elecveg, had a similar idea but was a couple of days later with it: “Grappling Hook to Maxwell, shoot at right metal block. Pull up. Remove hat when over cage, release hook, use Drill to get in.”
We tried each entry once, and gave them another chance when a failure may have been down to human error. But those were the only two successes. There was, however, a magnificent entry that was brought low only by hubris. We present KSCorp: “1) Summon a pterodactyl, glue a plank horizontally to its head, position it so plank is under the cage. 2) Give yourself wings, take off top hat, land on the plank next to cage. Get axe, destroy cage, get Starite that's on the plank.”
That was our tenth attempt, and the closest we got to the Starite. But a copy of Scribblenauts is yours, KSCorp, because that kind of thinking needs encouraging.
Several of you may be harrumphing at this very moment, thinking that your idea should have worked. To prove it wouldn’t, here are the videos showing that jet packs, magic carpets, and steel boxes just don’t work.
And how did we do it? Oh, it was easy – and we didn’t end up in the lava. You don’t have to smash the cage, after all: you just have to open it.
Thanks again to all the participants, to Warner Bros. for supplying the prizes – and keep your eyes on the edgeonline Twitter feed for more of this kind of thing in the future.
