On the Mistakes of UMD

Suddenly PSP arrives and 400 movies appear. Everybody says ‘yeah, lets see if we can get people to pay $20 0r $30 for crappy movies that have less content then DVDs’. It turns out they’re not that stupid and then ‘oh okay, well that didn’t work, well lets pull the cord completely’.

What we really needed was to do a better job of approaching our relationship with the movie studios on UMD in the same way we approached our relationship with software publishers on games and we didn’t do that. Now we’re attempting to go out and handle it personally. While I firmly believe in a digital model I think if we’ve got a UMD based machine that you should continue to offer consumers an opportunity to buy in disc based format.

On a Hard-Drive PSP

We’ve definitely thought about it. When we got into the PSP business, it wasn’t ever the plan to stay with the exact same model. As the cost of memory comes down and as we get it slimmer and lighter, there’s certainly a march towards digital content delivery devices but nothing that is imminent that I’m going to pull out of my back pocket and show you. But I do think that’s the trend moving forward. Whether that’s done exclusive of the current PSP or in conjunction with it as a secondary offer or whether it’s an evolution that ultimately leads to a hard drive based PSP is still being determined.

That was a great interview. Someone on Kotaku said they liked the cut of this guy's gib, and I have to agree with him. Jack Tretton is a straight shooter, and you can sense he enjoys what he does, in terms of working in the games industry and being a spokesperson for Sony. He even sees problems with how Sony does business, and tries his best to correct it, for both the consumers and himself. And I think that's a great person to have, Sony's lucky for that.

And I can sympathize with the blogs comment. I used to write for a pretty good website, and the hurtful comments do actually hurt, especially when you get sites like digg in the equation (those guys are ruthless). So I understand where he's coming from. But it's good he knows that there isn't much you can do, other than gain more experience in your battle armor:)

I doubt any other company must feel guilty like Sony on broken BIG promises and potentials. Nintendo and Microsoft are doing an excellent job of being conservative and down to earth, while Sony always promises the Sky.

No problems. People have to understand there will be birthing pains. Anyhow, the new site is quite nice.

Before someone complains - the page-break function in our CMS is still a bit wonky, which is why some pages seem to be short. We're not trying to bounce page impressions up. It's being fixed.
