Nintendo has sold 7 million Wii units in Japan since its launch back in December 2006, according to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, but those figures show the console’s rate of sales is in steady decline.

Late in January this year, Enterbrain stated that the Wii had hit past the five million sales mark in Japan.  5,019,337 units had been sold, which since its launch thirteen months prior meant the console had a sales rate of approximately 386,000 units per month. Enterbrain’s estimates today show that, as the Wii enters its second year since launch, it has a sales rate of approximately 292,000 in Japan; that calculates as a 24 percent drop.

That drop coincides with the console’s steady decline in sales over recent months (though it had enjoyed a slight sales climb in the last two weeks), and the fall in annual spending on the Wii is certainly part of a wider decline in TV console sales (down 33 percent as shown in our global market report), as well as a Japanese economy in the midst of a recessive phase.

Last week, Screen Digest’s senior games analyst Piers Harding-Rolls told Edge that mainstream consoles could be more susceptible to an economy in recession. “The new mainstream consumers that play lifestyle and social games on the Wii and DS are more likely to be impacted more by a recession,” he says, adding that it is Nintendo's market who may consider games and consoles a much more discretionary spend.

The Wii, of course, is about to enter its third Christmas, which is certain will push its sales figures up worldwide. However, the console would have to sell over 2 million units in Japan over the holiday season in order to return to its previous sales rate.

I'm not sure I follow this right. The artcile says:

"it has a sales rate of approximately 292,000 in Japan; that calculates as a 24 percent drop. "

and later goes on to say:

"part of a wider decline in TV console sales (down 33 percent as shown in our global market report)"

So, if console sales are down 33% overall worldwide, and in Japan, the Wii is only down 24%, doesn't that mean it's faring BETTER then the overall average?

Exactly! This seems news just for news sake....

All good things come to an end. I guess the novelty might have worn off then, it did for me, just flogged my dusty wii on ebay. Economic downturn or lack of decent hardcore games? You decide. As a great philosopher once said "A man can not live on casual games alone"

We know you'd like to think Wii sales are slowing because *YOU* are not pleased with it, but clearly it's the economic downturn... sales have slowed in Japan across the board. One can imagine how pathetic it would've been over there for the industry had the PSP and DS not released redesigns this fall. Even still, there hasn't been a steady flow of games to spur sales of the Wii since Mario Kart.

It's not like people aren't buying the Wii in favor of picking up a PS3 or 360, as Wii consistently outsells both of them (most times, combined).

Nintendo has yet to drop the price, ship new colors, or do any kind of new sku, etc. Clearly Ninty doesn't feel too threatened.

Sure, it's not because *I'M* not pleased with it, but I'm a consumer with consumer attitudes. At first I was totally in awe of the Wii, but soon became jaded once the novelty wore off, maybe this is happening on a larger scale. Hell, people went mad for the George Foreman lean, mean grilling machine at first.. where are they now?.. still selling, but I bet that most of the sold ones out there are sitting at the back of the cupboard making friends with Mr Toasted Sandwich Maker.

I use my Foreman every few days. In fact, i've used it so much, the non-stick coating started to come off and had to buy another one. I know for a fact my lazy friend uses his Foreman for every kind of meat product he cooks. My girlfriend also has one that she uses for fatty meats. I happen to think the Foreman grill is used quite a lot, based on personal experiences and first-hand evidence from others. The same goes for my Wii, and all my friends who have Wiis. I don't know anyone that has sold them since they bought it. And, based on the amount we trade games and play online, it seems there is still plenty of "novelty" left in them. They use them, just like they use their Formans.

Haha. Brilliant. Glad you still use your GFG, gotta love that grease free meat goodness. Personally speaking all the people i know who own wiis have stopped playing them. Maybe it's because we're all early/mid thirties... The funniest thing about selling my wii was when I told my Mother and she got upset that we couldn't play it again at Christmas.. I rest my case

Dude, it's a lean, mean fat-grilling machine, what's not to like.

All my friends are mid-20s to early 30s too, and still playing their Wiis. Guess i'm not friends with many "core" gamers.

Sounds like you should have sold it to your Mother.

What an amazing direction for this discussion to take.
