Id walks the line between sticking to what it's best at and being stuck in its ways.
7Id Software's classic shooters have been unavailable in Germany since their release, with the country's Federal Department For Media Harmful To Young Persons putting both games in the same category as pornography. Bethesda Softworks recently appealed the ruling, and it has proven successful. "We are obviously very pleased with this decision," Bethesda's Pete Hines told Joystiq. "Can't give you details on when they will be available in Germany, [but] we'll let everyone know as soon as we know."
The increasingly popular online pass - which typically requires second-hand buyers to cough up an extra fee for online multiplayer - is being used by Rage developer Id Software to restrict access to singleplayer content. Dotted throughout the gameworld are sewer hatches, which are only accessible to those who bought the game new. "Those hatches are all over," creative director Tim Willits told Eurogamer. "Most people never find them…It's outside the main path. We're not detracting from anything."

2During his Quakecon keynote last week, Id co-founder John Carmack revealed that only those with sizeable Xbox 360 hard drives will be able to install the game when it is released in October. "On the 360 we don't have a partial install option," he said. "It's all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate. It means you have to install 21-22GB of stuff, which takes a long time, but if you've got it and you play it on the 360 that's the only way to go."
5Back in April, Id's Tim Willits told us John Carmack was hoping to release Doom 3's source code when Rage is released, saying: "His philosophy of maintaining that type of connection with the community hasn't changed." Parent company Zenimax has since given its permission for the source code to be released, and Carmack said during his Quakecon keynote last night that, while it still needed a polish and the approval of Id's legal department, it will be made available some time after Rage is released in October.

While Carmack's "been crunching on Rage" according to his Twitter feed, his Armadillo Aerospace rocket project has suffered two crashes. One due to instability as the rocket returned to ground ("a small area of shrubbery was torched") and one due to combustion becoming unstable 11 seconds into flight, causing the rocket to turn sideways in flight, tearing several fins off and eventually crashing into the desert. "We will persevere..." says Carmack. On the plus side, the crashes make for exciting watching - see below for the first one - and click the source for Armadillo's full flight reports.
