Kid Icarus: Uprising is the new Japanese all-formats number one, Masahiro Sakurai's 3DS debut selling 132,526 copies in its first week on shelves. In second place is Yakuza Black Panther 2, Sega's PSP game selling just under 105,000. Kojima Productions is hiring for staff to work on a new Metal Gear game. A listing on publisher Konami's website confirms that Kojima Productions will have its own booth at the GDC Career Pavilion next month, and is looking for staff in Japan and California. More >
Konami has confirmed that Metal Gear Online will be closed down in June. Kotaku reports that the game, which launched alongside Metal Gear Solid 4 in 2008 and peaked at 1.3 million users, will close on June 21. More >
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admits that Team Ico has been forced into "scrapping and rebuilding" long-awaited PS3 exclusive The Last Guardian to ensure it fits with director Fumito Ueda's vision. 2Hideo Kojima has confirmed, and shown off, a special 3DS system being released alongside the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D. Erstwhile Edge columnist Toshihiro Nagoshi has hinted at a significant overhaul to the Yakuza series with the upcoming Yakuza 5, describing its creation as "like building a new house." Nagoshi's comments come from the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, translated by Andriasang. Nagoshi confirms that Yakuza 5 will take place in five locations - Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka, with each at least the same size, if not bigger, than Yakuza 2's Osaka, and Okinawa, as seen in the series' PS3 debut, Yakuza 3. 4Keita Takahashi's series returns, and this Vita launch title promises a unique spin on the familiar formula: players can use the handheld's rear touch panel to stretch and flatten their Katamari to fit through small gaps. The below trailer is sadly bereft of gameplay footage, but Namco Bandai has also released a few screenshots showing the new-look Katamaris in action.
Two trailers here, one showing the HD remaster of PSP title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the other the Metal Gear Solid HD Edition. In Japan, that consists of Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, together with the two MSX originals, and a download code for Metal Gear Solid; Peace Walker will be sold separately. In the west, Peace Walker replaces Metal Gear Solid. The collection is set for release in Japan on November 23, and is due in North America and Europe before the end of the year.
1A sequel to Acquire's PlayStation 2 ninja stealth title Shinobido, first released in 2005, is in development for PlayStation Vita. Shinobido 2's Harakiri system lets the player ally with various factions, with a branching narrative dependent on said alliances. A European release has already been confirmed, with Namco Bandai to publish the game, though there's no news of a North American publisher just yet.
