 The Apple Thread

Yossarian's picture

A place to ask for help, advice and generally discuss anything realated to OSX, iOS, iPods and the state of Steve Jobs's new liver. how the company will survive without his Jobsness at the helm.
But first, some useful advice and links.

Technical Support
If you're having technical issues, by all means fire away. There are certainly people on this board who may well be able to give you an idea of what is causing a particular issue. Having said that, if the problem is hardware related, you will probably end up having to visit your local Genius Bar or an Apple Authorised Service Provider anyway. There's only so much diagnosis that can be done via short descriptions on the internet. If you do have to visit a service provider and you are under warranty the service provider will bill Apple directly for the repair. If you are unsure as to whether or not you're under warranty, you can find out by chucking your serial number in here.

Often, minor issues with the OSX software itself is caused by issues with permissions. If OSX is playing up, it's always worth trying to repair your permissions. If that doesn't solve the issue, you can also try repairing your hard drive.

If these things don't solve the issue, the next step may be an erase and install of OSX (that guide is for Snow Leopard, if you have an earlier version of OSX, the process is much easier). Please note that the 'erase' part of 'erase and install' refers to all of your software, files and folders including any iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand iWeb, and iDVD) which you should have on a seperate disc that came with the machine.

It is possible that an archive and install will deal with the issue, but it is equally possible that this will simply keep whatever it was that was causing the issue. On a similar note, immediately restoring from a Time Machine backup may simply copy the issue back onto the machine. I would suggest making selective backups of what you really want to keep onto a hard drive or USB stick and just copying them over to the same place once the reinstall is completed. If you are using this method, you will find lots of useful stuff hidden in the Library folder in your Home Folder (not the one on the root drive) such as preference settings for individual applications, templates, saved games etc. Personally, I have a look through the Library Folder, and the Application Support Folder contained within it, and copy any folders relating to applications I want to continue using (and that haven't been playing up on me) and put them back into the same place once the install is completed.

Similarly, minor issues with iOS devices may be solvable through a hard reset, (although that guide is for iPhone, it will work on iPads as well) whilst a device that isn't responding to that may have to be put into recovery mode and have a forced restore from iTunes.

iPods can also be reset.

If you have an issue with sound only coming out of one channel of your audio jack on your iPod or iPhone, check that there isn't any fluff in the bottom of the headphone socket stopping the headphones from being inserted properly. This can usually be fixed with some compressed air or a paperclip (although if you go down the paperclip route and end up damaging something, don't blame me).

Online Resources
If you wish to do any upgrades or repairs yourself, iFixit will provide all of the guides and advice you need, as well as selling the necessary tools and parts. If you want to upgrade your RAM, I find Crucial to be very good, they sell good quality RAM, have fast service and their system scanner tool will tell you exactly how much RAM you have, how much you can fit, and will take you straight to their relevant page so you can see how much it might cost.

You can also find some excellent websites for help with issues and troubleshooting, including Apple's own support pages and the MacRumo(u)rs forums.

To find the latest or older versions of software and applications, or to just try and find out if a particular piece of software exists, check out MacUpdate and CNet Downloads (nee VersionTracker).

Other Websites
For Apple news, rumours and speculation, you could do worse than to check out the previously mention MacRumors (which inludes the excellent buyer's guide which works out when a product is likely to be refreshed based on the average time between refreshes and the amount of time since the last refresh) or Appleinsider.

For keeping up with useful new apps and software, I personally use Lifehacker, despite the fact that the ultra-organised, super-productive lifestyle that it promotes makes me feel like one of the laziest people in the world.

Software
I'm planning to add to this section in the future with useful software. I'm open to suggestions as to what to add here so please chuck in the apps and applications you use and I'll add them to this OP.

Anything Else?
If there are any tips that you'd like to add, software you use, resources you find useful or anything else you feel should be added, please put them here and I'll update as needs be.

One Last Thing
If this saves without paragraphs again, I think I might cry.

Yay, the Apple Thread is up and running.

Okay, the basics of running an iPad are:

You don't have to have a SIM for anything, the thing you do need is iTunes. Essentially, anything that you want from your computer will go through iTunes to get onto your iPad, whether contacts and calendars or movies and music (although a MobileMe account will sync info type things over the cloud, and I wouldn't be too surprised if one or two free alternatives had popped up by now). You can download apps, movies and music directly onto your iPad from iTunes, and you can set up an account on the iTunes store from the iPad itself, just go into the App Store section under the settings).

Setting up an iTunes store account means handing over your credit card details, but does not mean that you have to buy anything. However, you can't download even free apps without an account. Once you've set this up, you just select the app or film you want, stick in your password and you'll be billed at the end of the week.

If you have films and music on your computer that you want to put on your iPad, they have to be in iTunes to sync across. This somewhat limits your available formats (especially with films, essentially you can have MP4 and that's it), so this either means converting your existing film files, or getting an app that will recognise other file types, just search for these on the iTunes store. VLC used to be available but it looks like it's been pulled (one of the guys behind the app was threatening to pull it himself because the locked down nature of iOS meant that it violated the open source ethos behind the product).

Anything else?

OK, I have a macbook, I bootcamped it and everything was happy. Then windows being windows it slowed down. So I reinstalled windows on it. Except now it's not bootcamped windows it's just windows. So I don't have any of the proper drivers and my mouse pad doesn't scroll properly and do clever things like allow me to right click.

None of the drivers I got by googling helped. Anyone here know the answer?

Yossarian's picture

You could probably use Disk Utility to clear the Windows partition and then reinstall Windows using BootCamp. Probably.

thanks Yoss, i'll set up an account asap.

Do you have a list of good apps? I dont mind paying for them if they're good.

Any bugs or problems to look out for? Any shortcuts? Easter eggs?

Whats the battery life on this thing? I'd read the manual thing but its in russian :(

This is probably a good place to start looking for Apps: http://gizmodo.com/5747915/the-best-ipad-apps Beyond that, I'm sure that people here will be able to recommend a few. As far as battery life goes, the first iPad was rated at 10 hours. I'm sure that the iPad 2 will manage at least that, but you'll be able to get the full specs from apple.com/uk

right, just downloaded peggle and pvz. Now to check out this link. Gonna be an expensive week i think.
Cheers yoss.

Big Launch day for Lion, iCloud and iOS5.

Live streamy updato thing can be found at http://www.macrumorslive.com/

Rumours suggest that the iOS could finally be going all cloudy and everything could be heading out to the ether. No more need to plug into itunes physically anymore... possibly.

With this and E3 it'll be a funtime week.

@MK

I would recommend both Cave shmups (Espgaluda 2 and DoDonPachi Resurrection)

free versions or the full price versions?

@mariokart64
if you want to try drawing on it, sketchbook (express)..
start using dropbox as soon as possible..
if you plan on reading books and pdfs the ibooks will suffice..
comicbook is great for, yes, reading comicbooks..
sys info will help you (a little) with "what's going on under the interface" if you're coming from systems with a (visible) file systems, don't expect finder or explorer though..
plaintext will take care of your writing needs..
apps like soundrop will (possibly) demonstrate why a device like the ipad might be kind of cool.. it can also be useful.. for example, for me the irhino only justifies the purchase and the waiting.. depending on what you do.. the appstore is huge and full of all kinds of programs.. most of them are useless of course, but you will find your way of filtering them soon..
enjoy..

@MK

my sarcasm sense is tinglin'!

wintermute's picture

oh and yes..
worms kind of work on it.. (only tried HD)..

wintermute's picture

pabloamigo must be having fun now..

pablo, i'm not being sarcastic, i presume some games are good enough just for the lite or demo versions.

or are you suggesting i just try before i buy? if its good enough i'll just take a punt.

So Yos, you saying that now VLC player's been pulled I can't play my (ahem) almost-legit movies through dropbox?
I only bought the damn thing to do it!!! Any other media players that'll do the job?
Also, i've just bought a wifi ipad from the States to save a little cash - anybody forsee any potential problems with that? I've been assured that my warranty is global, so any tech problems I could sort out here.
Cheers.

@JJ, there are some other media players, stick VLC into the app store and a couple pop up. They aren't free, but still.
As for the pad, I've no idea.
@WM, pretty good. I'm intrigued by the whole 'download only' thing. I reckon that this adds to the rumours that Apple are planning to ditch the optical drive, which can only be a good thing. It takes up far too much space in my laptop for very little added functionality.
@MK, yep, PvZ is great, and it feels like it was written for the iPad. I far prefer it to the desktop version.

lol, i JUST realised you can tap the plant and then the location rather than dragging it. lol, much much easier. I'm upto the part where the garden goes into darkness.

This is almost as good as defense tower, i really like the humour, many smiles so far :D

It has a great ending as well. I don't want to give anything away, just make sure you have your headphones in when you complete it.

So my sparkly new ipad arrives this weekened. Well excited.
Any recomendations for my first few apps? :)

i've not been playing it with the sound on, are the sounds/music good? I'll give it a try over the weekend!

The sound in the game itself is fine. Just make sure the sound is up when you finish it.
