Anime & Manga

Raiziel's picture

Feels like it's been ages since I watched a bit of anime. I got right into it during the early summer of last year, but since I moved house the only thing I've watched is the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (I love that show so much I even enjoyed the Endless Eight).

Over Christmas I sank a ton of hours into Persona 3 Portable and it's got me in the mood for a bit of anime again. I believe it was Lazy Gunn that recommended Baccano, which I duly purchased and didn't watch, so that's up first.

What's everyone watching/reading?

I have Moribito, Sengoku Basara, Haruhi Suzumiya and Eden of the East sitting in my DVD cabinet waiting to be watched.

Currently 326 chapters into Prince of Tennis. Loving it, apart from the super powers/special abilities schtick it has going on. It's like Tennis for Dragonball Z fans. Lots of grunting and shouting followed b power auras and fireballs (well, sort of).
I'm looking forward to dropping into Bakuman and The Wallflower when I'm done with the last few chapters.

This doesn't need its own thread. Stop being weird nerds.

There's a comicbooks thread, there're TV and movie threads; why is the Asian junk special.

monkey's picture

It leaves the other threads untainted.

A very small percentage of the total is actually laudable I swear

I like being a weird nerd. It's something I've come to embrace.

Just preordered Welcome to the NHK, which is about a weird nerd, I think.

And his unhealthy fascination with underage schoolgirls. At least that's what the first volume of the manga was about. Never got around to the rest.
Read a few chapters of The Wallflower. It's ok, but I enjoyed the anime more. Just seemed to make the wackiness funnier. Shame ADVision went bust and the rest of it never got released over here. I have no idea how I'll ever see the rest.

Ghosts in the shell is awesome. Think i heard that James Cameron bought the rights for a live remake some time ago. Wish he did that rather than avatar

Only Captain Harlock is any good. The rest is shite.

Looks fairly awful.

Good news everyone! The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya is out on Blu-ray 20th February. It's a whopper, too, clocking in at 162 minutes. 'Citing!

I may have actually stooped so low as to actually read Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, and Fairy Tail and be totally into them.

I feel sick.

I've steered clear of One Piece and Fairy Tale. Bleach and Naruto are high on my read every chapter list.

You badger!

I'll have to watch that now.
Props for reinstating the thread. :)

Reading everyone's comments on the likes of One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, etc...
I never understood the whole 'squillion episode' series thing... Those shows generally tend to create fond memories, and little else.

Like, what the fuck was Dragonball Z all about, really? o_0

Absolutely F/A when you think it through objectively, but you can't explore that with fans of the franchise.
So I guess the writers got something right... :P

That said, I've been watching Darker Than Black Season 2 (Ryuusei no Gemini)... The reviews have been so - so, but I'm fucking enamoured!
I mean, the lead character from season one is now the world's hardest wino and a part time carer.
Meanwhile, he's being tracked down by (amongst others) his longterm love interest...

...and a SADOMASOCHISTIC LESBIAN NINJA!

Fuck yeah.

I can see what the reviewers are saying... It's all quite formulaic when compared to the first season (which has a very cool/original (plot) structure - worth watching). But then, the animation is very, very good, and each episode (I'm on 4 right now), moves along at a rate of knots...
It's also been suggested that the franchise doesn't get wrapped up in this series...

It'll probably end on episode 4789752... ¬_¬

...

I'm just saiyan.

I stopped watching Naruto when I started getting into the manga. Just made a whole lot more sense to me.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars are recent excellent films, well worth watching and checking out. I really enjoyed both of them.

I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...

Also Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a better telling of the FMA story than the first time around, I have a fondness for that series.

Summer Wars?

That's in no way related to Winter Warz, is it?

Cause' if it is, shit'd be ill. :P

P.S.

Finished Darker Than Black 2 in a 2 hr session before kipping yesterday...
Mad action, much emotive (but admittedly heartwarming) puffery, none of the depth of the first series.
It's still possible to get something out of it, if you're a fan of the first season.

6/10

Baccano may be next, though I remember someone suggesting Evangelion on the old bb...

One mans power fantasies and fetish feeding for planetary explosions while seeing how long it takes for the kids to realise all the characters are named after vegetables.

The last anime I watched all the way through was Stand Alone Complex. I've pretty much forsaken all other anime from the last five years barring Gurren Lagann which plays to so many typical giant super robot tropes it's hard not to enjoy feeling like a kid again watching this shit before school in the morning.

I've got the complete set of Baccano! on my desk waiting to be watched that a friend lent me. Apparently that's one of the better ones in recent years.

Baccano got bumped in favour of Welcome to the NHK, which turned up today. Watched a few eps already and I'm really enjoying it.

Got Ghost in the Shell on Blu-ray. I usually chuck subtitles on films but oddly the subtitles just don't match what's being said. They are along the same lines and don't change anything to the point where they contradict dialogue but it actually looks like the subtitle folk have gone out there way to find a different way of saying the same thing as the character. Never seen that before.
