Saw the new Karate Kid last night. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but only really saved by Jackie Chan being awesome. Jaden Smith is decent, but is clearly trying to be his dad and doesn't really work that well. He doesn't have the comic timing or charm to pull off the flirty-arrogance his dad does. Also, it's 2 hours 20 minutes, and you could easily cut 30 minutes from it and make it more fast paced and fun.

I've heard decent things about the new Karate Kid but I can't get over the fact that he just looks too young. I mean, how much damage can kids that small really do to each other? Maybe just a change in perspective as I'm much older than when I watched original KK but they were all older right - like late high school age?
I think due to the way they gather reviews, a high rotten tomatoes score is often indicative of agreeably ok movies, but in my personal experience, the last few movies I've been led to by RT have been good but not great. Unstoppable (86%), Source Code (91%). Now, of course X-men could still be a great film. I think aggregate sites can find you an good movie but there are lots of curious scores. I mean Avatar (83%) , what does that mean? Sure, I saw it in imax 3d and was impressed by the visuals for a time but at the end of the day its patronising, agonisingly slow excuse for a story left me with a cold feeling after it was all done. The new forum looks like a blog, so that's why I'm ranting.
Of course someone elses review is always going to be subjective. I guess people use the aggregate score as it's better than just taking the word of some guy from the Daily Mail or whatever. But you're right in that it's only as reliable as the sources, which can be questionable. In the case of X-Men, I do believe it's proving popular across the board so far though. And I'm with you on Avatar. Plus it pretty much takes the blame for all these shoddy 3D releases over the last 18 months.
Hangover 2 last night. It's got the laughs but it might be the laziest sequel of all time. Scenes are unashamedly ripped from 1 and placed into 2 without any thought of context or narrative. Even Home Alone 2 was more aware of itself than this. But in saying that everyone else I saw it with loved it and promptly disowned me for having expectations of any kind
Cosby: yeahthey are only 12 in this one. They do hurt eachother but it's not exactly like a 16 year old kid hitting someone in the face. It also makes some of the romantic stuff a bit queesy.

Watched Dead Man's Shoes yesterday, for only the second time since it was released. I knew it was good, but I'd forgotten just how incredible it is. There's not one wasted second in the entire film and Paddy Considine's performance is one of such compelling ferocity measured with subtlety that it elevates the film, in my opinion, to a true modern masterpiece.
Genius.
Because of the state of this place, we've all buggered off to www.thebearandbadger.co.uk - come and have a look around!
Watched Fish Story again for the first time in ages. Absolutely love it, it certainly has failings but it never fails to make me smile. The director appears to have squeezed a little too much in, but love it anyway. Go grab it people it's a really fun, punk rock/coming of age/end of the world comedy drama whatever. The IMDB page includes a few spoilers straight away. I came to the film cold and recommend anyone tempted does the same. It's got Ichi the killer in it if that helps
As much as I don't want to be a dual forum posting badass, I'll reiterate that Oldboy is on channel 4 tonight at quarter past midnight for the few who haven't seen it. Essential viewing.
I watched Beverly Hills cop 1 and 2 last night for a bit of 80's fun, and to laugh at Eddie Murphy's laugh because it's identical to my brother's laugh.
I see Human Centipede II: The Full Sequence has been totally banned in the UK by the BBFC. I don't know how to post spoilers/colour it white, but I can see why they have done.
He did promise it would make the first film look like My Little Pony, so I'd say he achieved that.
Saw Primer the other day, great film. Well complicated, but purposefully so, and overall more about the friendship of the two guys than what they have accidentally discovered. Well worth a watch for being a sci-fi film that portrays scientific discoveries as basically accidental and not in some huge lab somewhere. Very good indeed.

The last film I saw was The Hangover Part II, which I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than I expected to.

Yuck!
Im currently watching The Thing on ITV4. With one too many JD's. Doubt I'll make it to the next ad break before I fall asleep.
X-Men first class was decent. Not as good as the Rotten Tomatoes score makes you believe, though.
