Headphones Suggestions?

ExcellentBenji's picture

I'm looking for some good quality, inexpensive (no more than £30) headphones for use with an Ipod. I have been using Seinheisser CX-300II headphones but, although my first pair lasted a good 6 months, subsequent pairs quickly develop a fault with the jack and stop working properly (hiss, stereo channels missing etc.). This is definitely a problem with the headphones, as I've tried them with other devices and the same problems are apparent.

So, I'm done with the Seinheisser CX-300IIs. Any suggestions on hard-wearing, durable, preferably in-ear headphones that you've had good experience with?

Thanks again

Whatever model Shure you can get for your money.

Bigger awesome.

I've had three pairs of CX-300II :) I keep buying them because i've found nothing which comes close performance wise for the price. I had some £80 denon's which weren't as good. £140 pair of shures were only slightly better.

this style is not free, this style is expensive.

Trick with the dickie jack on CX300s is to be careful how you wrap and store them - when not in use, I always bung em in a wee bag of their own. Went through two pairs before this dawned on me; current one has outlasted the previous by a year+ now.

Have decided generally that I don't believe in shelling maja figgaz for canalphones. If I go harder than the top-end Shure closed back full headphones hence, will be for something prestigious like a grandsworth of Grado.

My standard Apple ones are still going 12 months after first use, the £35 AIAIAI Pipe things I got were of a less than robust build. Sennies it is then.

Surely it would be cheaper in the long run to buy a better quality pair?

By the by, I agreed with Brooks about the somewhat weedy bass performance on my UE700s, but since then bought some large Comply Foam tips from America (I have MASSIVE ears) and now they actually fit/seal properly the bass is vastly improved.

Brooks's picture

Complys ought be considered mandatory for all compatible models. I pick the biggest size they do and jam them right in there.

Even though the UEs come with a variety of rubber plugs they only came with one set of foam (which I discovered later were medium). I was a bit wary about spending so much on some little bits of foam but they've been worth every penny.

The new models come with a little shield that stops wax falling into the body which is super useful.

Pair of Sony closed backs (MDRV7000, iirc) have served well as monitors, would love the Grados but talking silly money, and would likely have to invest in a headphone amp to get the best out of them. Used to swear by Shure IEMs but with hindsight the law of diminishing returns applies very strongly, though this is true across all HiFi really

WorKid's picture

I do prefer closed backs. Have two lots of HD201's and they've been great for the cash.

Not as silly money as the equivalent quality in loudspeakers, fortunately.

For £30 and in-ear, I doubt you can do better than the CXs. Follow Brooks' advice - just take care of the jack. Other in-ear 'phones I've tried at that price point just disappoint in comparison.

If you're willing to consider over ear, the PX100s from the same company are probably the best sub-£50 headphones I've tried, really very good - the PX100-II's got equally good reviews but I haven't tried them.

Very true, and they look bloody lovely. Just ooze class and show off workmanship in a way a box full of cones never could

In any case, would call for a demo of it and its competition (Senny HD800s, the top-end Beyer etc.) before pulling the trigger. One day I'll find a vendor that'll actually provide that exact service.

Shure SRH840s are motherfuckers but I wouldn't bring them outside the house.

I've been using the same pair of Goldring in-ear headphones for the last couple of years, got them at about 70% off RRP from play.com and they're the spot on. Unfortunately they don't seem to make them anymore, sound fantastic and don't let any sound escape either, even at full volume.

Have just done my usual of browsing the Sennheiser 201's and found myself hovering over the 215's.

I think I'll research the odd looking 202 II's a little more later on, [maybe the 215's also].

215's aren't much cop - closed back but bugger all attenuation. Cheap components as well - sound quality pretty bad and lots of leak.

Got a pair of these Bose at work: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bose-41213-Bose%C2%AE-around-ear-headphones/dp/B000HWV8QG/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1322326402&sr=8-13
Great sound, light and comfy, cuts out lots of background noise.

Last Senn CX 300 II broke a few months back and thought I'd give another brand a try - so plumped out for these "SoundMagic" E10 ones (but in grey and black, not these red ones): http://www.amazon.co.uk/SoundMAGIC-E10-Earphones-Black-Red/dp/B005HP3PNM/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1322326552&sr=1-2
Doing pretty well so far - good sound, solid metal enclosures for the buds, metal wrap cylinder things on the wire split and the headphone jack, so deffo feels sturdier than the Senn CX 300, but only time will tell how well the connections last.

WorKid's picture

I need some decent "sport" ones for long cycles, I think my current ones (PMX 80) don't have too long left, and they've been solid rather than spectacular.

I've been thinking of getting these to replace my Klipschs as "public transport 'phones", seem pretty good judging by this review. How are they in terms of sound leakage? I don't like to disturb/broadcast what i'm listening to anyone.

djchump's picture

They're earbuds so lot less leakage than over the ear cans.
Quick test - iphone about halfway loud (which is my general listening vol), listening to voodoo people pendulum mix and holding earbuds in hand: can hear bit of tinny, but disappears completely when place a finger over the end of the buds.
Crank it all the way loud and with a finger over you can still hear a fair bit of leak - not sure how loud it'd be once in ears but at that volume it's way too loud for me anyways.

Gurt Tractor's picture

Thanks! Yeah that sounds good enough for me. I don't know why they don't score the sound leakage in headphone reviews, it's a fairly easy thing to test and some phones leak really badly.

Add another star for getting through the whole review without using the word phallic.

I got the CX-300 IIs and they seem pretty ace. They come with a bag!

Why do they have an L-Shaped jack?

Vaguely related,

Anyone know of any decent desktop PC speakers. Nothing too OTT (i.e. just 2.0 or 2.1). The speakers on my new lappy are OK but not up to my exacting standards.

Is there such a thing as a set that takes both audio and power via USB?
