Hallo forum!
I'm looking in to speech recognition software for work purposes. Basically, I have pretty substantial audio interviews to transcribe and anyone who's done this knows it's an absolute nightmare and takes forever.
Does anyone have experience with such tools? Preferably free / trial if possible. I'd also like to be able to transcribe through software audio playback if I can.
Any tips?

I dont but I may have a genius idea. How about running the audio through an editing program and render it out at half the speed. That way you should be able to keep up in real time when typing it out?
Sounds amazing to me. Probably terrible though!
There is something called Express Scribe which makes transcribing things easy apparently, at least according to a quick google search. Why didn't you do a quick google search, you lazy bastard?
It's his work ethic, clearly.
Dan, google previous interviews with the same people and copy the results.
DONE.
Unfortunately, I'm a pioneer on the subject of interviewing cute first year bioenginneers. Damn.
Just found that and it looks dead useful. Cheers Kow! For a bovine, you're very helpful.
IIRC the Dragon Speech Recognition software is supposed to be the about as good as it gets for this kind of software. It's not free, though.
I could also do with suggestions here, especially feedback on whether you can play audio into a PC mic and the software will do the transcription. I have no idea about this stuff and it's not for me, but you'd all be LOVELY WANKERS if you could help.
I bet that's not as good as it sounds.
No it's probably not, but it was a good interview. Anyway, I used that one Kow found and it's a godsend. It lets you control audio playback (including play speeds) using the F keys on your 'puter without having to leave MS Word. I ran the tape at 50% speed then only had to do the odd pause / rewind the whole time. managed over 1,400 words in a couple of hours which is damn fast for transcription. For me, anyway.
How did you transfer the audio? Was it as simple as playing it from an external speaker at a microphone?
Na I use a digital recorder so I transferred by USB then played the .wav through the software. That gave me the extra controls in Word then I just typed as it ran along. The tutorial says it also works with Dragon so I'm going to try and warez it up and attempt to get the thing transcribing for me.
I'm looking forward to amusing mistranscribbed out takes
ok and balls, is there something out there that can take audio through a mic and transcribe it? I don't mind paying for it but it needs to work.
I doubt if there's anything accurate enough that it would actually save you time. You can speak on android apps and it types it out for you but it regularly makes mistakes.
Bugger. Thanks anyway.
This maybe

Thanks fuckman. I can't test it but will pass on your suggestion.
If you're prepared to spend a few hundred quid then Adobe Creative Suite is probably up to it.
DS' link is just to record audio, nothing about transcribing it as far as I can see.
Oh, then im shit.

Well I didn't say that.
I know, you meant THE shit.

I've a cheap digital recorder that can't transfer to a computer so you have no choice but to play it from the recorder itself, although it does have a 50% playback speed option, and I reckon about 10 mins of tape an hour is average. I've not tried voice recognition, but I'd rather do it myself and get it right anyway.
That's what the dragon stuff does. Well, it's designed to do it with real speech, but I expect it should word with recorded speech as well, assuming there isn't a need to calibrate it for each new voice. I can't speak for its accuracy, mind.
EDIT: Removed extraneous Unlikely quote relating to sodomy.
Cool, I'll have a look then. I'm not sure how good the quality of the audio source is but there's got to be a better way of getting voice information transcribed than doing it yourself.
