Hello
I am new to the forums but a long term reader of edge magazine so i apologise if this topic was posted on the old forums.
I was just wondering if any other readers either tried to or changed from buying Edge magazine to getting it through the zinio app on the ipad. also what your thoughts of getting the magazine digitally instead of physically were.
personally i moved to the zinio app 6 months ago even before buying my ipad 2. I tried it out on the laptop which was a pretty horrible experience but testing on a friends ipad changed my mind. i have been reading Edge since issue 3 and still have every copy so as sad as it might sound it was quite difficult to change my habits. I think now i am finally getting used to it and enjoy that my collection isn't continuing to fill up the loft. it's also just £21 for 13 issues and makes it easy to have many issues on me without weighing me down.
so am i the only reader that does this now?

You're not alone in subscribing through Zinio. Google (I think he's registered here now) does it too. It's a great shame that this is your first experience of an Edge forum.
i have occasionally glimpsed the forum over the years and used to attempt to play games in a clan, post on forums etc but life took over (otherwise known as getting old but fighting it all the way).
the new forum and site seemed like a perfect time to start getting involved so here i am you will tire of me quickly :)
Yay for the new democratization of the old Edge forum (the people there scared me off from posting, and in all probability they'll scare me off from posting ever again). I've been a lurker for years, but like Doctorb the new re-design has been enough of an initiative to make me set up an account (not that it looks better). For this hesitant post, though, I expect bears!
Just to remain on topic: what's everyone's reaction to Zinio been? I've never been much of a fan of reading magazines off the net, but that could've been down to poor quality. I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to non-print reading, though, so it might take a bit of convincing. Do you actually prefer reading Edge online?
yeah Foley i too was cautious of commenting on the old forum. like the new kid at school i tried to avoid conflict by staying quiet and just listening to the others. i fear there are many more like us and the chances of them stumbling into this thread are slim. still i think we have done our bit so time to make a cuppa :)
I'm calling Ian alt!!!!
just kidding, hallow drB and foley

I have been reading Edge on my iPad since it became digitally available! Main reason for me was the ever increasing pile of paper mags building up (hate to throw them away!).
Like the fact I can carry them around with me easily now as I do tend to re-read them a fair bit. Only thing that is a slight gripe is the lack of a search because the pages are effectively scans of the paper mag. However I did notice a text button on the latest issue so a search option maybe on its way. Of course the other plus is that it's cheaper too.
to make things clear i would not recommend using zinio through your computer. it is basically a scan of the magazine so on a computer you will find the navigation and zooming of articles etc frustrating (unless you have a very large monitor) and you lose one of the best features of the hard copy, the ability to read away from your desk.
however on a tablet computer such as the ipad it's form factor makes this a lot easier and using gestures such as pinch to zoom and swipe to navigate make things a lot smoother.
you can buy the mag on a per issue basis so is easy enough to give it a try before subscribing (£2.49 for a single issue).
if you have an ipad i would recommend trying atomix magazine and egmi as well. atomix magazine is 59p per issue but first and third issue are free. egmi is a weekly companion to the american mag egm and is always free. dont go in expecting edge quality articles or design but as they are specifically made for the ipad rather than a scan of the mag they do have things like video and audio.
Cypher, cost is a bit of an issue seeing that I'm from Malta (I'm guessing it costs quite a bit more here than it does in the U.K). It wouldn't be much of a factor for me to keep buying it in print-form if it was only down to that, though. I own a Kindle (bloody hype!) and I've found that navigation has always been the major stumbling block for me. My choice may be made that little bit easier if the magazine's re-design is just as uninspiring as the last one - i.e. quit subscribing to the bloody thing. Writing quality has dipped down a bit too, IMO.
I know that the design of a magazine (especially Edge's) is part of the experience in reading it. But I'm not subscribing to a digital version of Edge if it's not available on Kindle at a fair price. Couldn't care less about the mug shots of muscular men with big guns.

While I get the print version of Edge I will say the Zinio app on my iPad does a great job with digital magazines. Edge itself is very readable on it. It won't replace my print because I still feel there is more value in holding an Edge magazine but it's a fine alternative.
Edge is now available on the Zinio iphone app as well as the ipad one, $4.99 per issue I think.
I might try an issue to compliment my print subscription but can't imagine it would be a great long term solution.
:(

Is Skerret bi-polar?
If you've lurked for as long as you claim, you'd know I'm certifiable.

Yeah, I've been using Zinio for a good 14 months since I bought an iPad at launch. To be honest, EDGE magazine is not the best example.
However, it has gotten better in the most recent issue. They've finally introduced the 'text' application which allows you to skip all the bullshit (like screenshots, photo's, design, etc.) and just read the article.
Thank fuck, because EDGE before this was night on impossible to read without zooming and moving around the page.
Also, the price is £2.50 - which is much better than the £4.50 for the paper copy.
I've noticed about 40 more people 'like' Edge on Facebook, so that little link has worked, I guess!
Oh yeah there a specific edge magazine readers page on facebook someone should probably put that in Bobs facebook thread.
Sounds good. I might actually start reading edge and magazines in general again when i get my ipad next week. I'll let you know how i feel about it then. Print, although lovely, takes up so much room and cost to the environment.

I use Zinio on my Android Tablet specifically for my Edge subscription. A fraction of the price of having it shipped to Canada every month. Works quite well, expecially now that, like Google said, you can skip the style and go straight to the substance (text only).
