Feedback on the new site

Ian Evenden's picture

Hello everyone.
There's a thread in the Other Media folder for feedback about the forum, so here's a thread for your views on the rest of the site. You have looked at it, right?

new site + adblock looks ok. Not a fan of the mouseover bits though. also, articles tend to scroll and scroll and scroll as you only get about 8 words to the line.

I'd like to, but it's a chore. No doubt when there's a bit less traffic I might find it to be more user friendly.

PS - That "Flag as offensive" banner which appears under EACH AND EVERY POST just isn't quite bright enough, actually.

If you could rename it the "Retired Edge Forumites Relocation Support Group" or something I'd be most grateful. I'll get back to you. This hasn't been very helpful I know.

It looks like your target demographic is the under fives. I'm absolutely amazed. Who did you guys consult about this? You did consult someone, right?

Bigger awesome.

I actually like the blueness, ads are a bit much but that aint gonna change, no PM button is super gay. The flag as offensive button worries me, don't get strict Edge!

That Connet with Edge banner is already getting on my tits, and I only registered 45 seconds ago.

New site is good. Great even.
Nicely laid out, clear, easily navigable sections.
Only complaint is content to ad ratio, but that's the internet for you; not as if you're the first site to take this kind of approach to ad space (and it's nowhere near on Gawker levels).
Less said about the "forums" the better, but the actual new site is good.

It appears to render fine on a mobile browser except for that interactivity bar which like every site bounces all over the place and is always in the way

Its hard to make a proper opinion as its new but my first impression is a little put off. I'll get used to the colour scheme but the excess blue isn't great. Lack of a PM is a good point and it would be nice if we can put our gametags in some form of sig at the end of a message as it's always helpful.
The comment box when you go to add a comment seems a touch small, especially for a discussion forum and I'd second the lack of a PM as this was handy for some discussions.
Ads are a fact of an internet site so I wont comlain about that but they do take away from the discussion boxes especially at the start of a page.
The website itself seems ok, I like the 150 top reviews being there. There's a lot of industry stuff which I wont go near but than, it's not aimed at me so I dont mind that. Need to really explore the other stuff before posting opinion.
Hope all that helps.

Quite frankly: it's a mess.

Too many ads and links that leave very little functional screen space. Half of the screen 'real estate' is lost.

I don't know about other smartphones but from my IPhone the site is a complete pain in the arse. Why no mobile support?

The general design is totally ott. The colour palette is almost childish.

I am not sure what to think yet, but it's a matter of time, I guess.
You might want to fix the error when signing up. By mistake I didn't change the year I was born, and when I tried to continue there was a big, red block over the year saying "you have to be 16 to sign up". I couldn't change it - Had to do it all again. :(

A link back to the forum discussion at the bottom of each page was really handy on the old site. Having to scroll back up through all that blue is a bit of an arse.

ARIS WAS RIGHT

The forum isn't really a forum. More a series of blog posts that you can comment on, but has none of the functionality of even the old forum, which was years behind most current forums.
It also looks horrible.

The main website I'd say is a big improvement, I don't mind the colour scheme.
But the forum, not so much.
When it was mentioned there would be reduced functionality I never thought it would be this reduced. Like Chopper said (and I'd quote if I could) this is just a line of comments

The main site and the forum are busy and garish, only the forum isn't really a forum. I had low expectations and they haven't been met.

Wow, over-zealous use of Adblock has left me with just the word FORUM, and the threads. No adverts, no navigation, nothing.
Now to remove the blue....

ChopperByrne's picture

No PMs anymore either. This site really does suck.

Also, boxes sliding down from the top or up from the bottom might be 'clever' but the are intensely irritating when you are using a site. I don't want to have to think about the route my mouse pointer takes across the screen, tyvm.

Bigger awesome.

Functionality and design are two separate things. Both are appalling, currently. The new forum is not fit for purpose, simple as. It shouldn't have launched yet, we needed a Beta.

Keep the existing forum going please.

As a Web Designer myself I know the first rule of Web Development is you cannot please everyone. Period. Personally I love the new design, both aesthetically and in terms of layout. It's very modern, and very easy to navigate. The new Edge site definitely feels like a place for Videogame enthusiasts - and contrary to popular opinion, I like the use of a specific colour palette; namely the blue, orange, grey and pink - very Web 2.0
I also like that we now have one general hub for everything Edge - no longer are the forumites banished to another section of space where we linger - adrift - about, beggin for attention. having everything under the one roof as it were is superb. And it mostly works without any hiccups, but herein lie some of the problems.
FUNCTIONALITY - Unfortunately the forums just aren't what we're used to or indeed need - if I'm being honest - the basic necessities of conversation and interaction are largely missing. A list of the following for example:
- No private messaging
- Inability to 'view profiles'
- No image / media / youtube embedding [integral part of videogame discussion]
- No BBCode
- No basic response functionality [Quote, edit, like, rate ect..]
- No Cookie trail at bottom of posts [linking back to main topic, folder]
Those are to name just a few. So like I said, visually I think the site is fantastic, even the front-page is great with all the articles and media for the user to consume. It's just the social and functionality side of things that are amiss in my opinion. Wht not truly go for what Edge is all about, community? Let us form groups, add friends, view profiles, send messages, have gamertags - Let us fully interact on this new site. Let Edge fufill it's slogan and be all about community and culture.

Cheers, Speedhaak [Kudos to the design team]...
