Important message - Final Fantasy XIV's initial 30 day trial has been extended for an indefinite period of time. Basically, it boils down to Square canning the PS3 version due to negative reception, and they will only charge when they are happy with it. So bar the cost of the game, you can play for free probably until a PS3 version arrives. You can even find the game for as low as a fiver on Amazon, so worth a punt.
So yeah, I'm gay for Vana'diel, and as such, I'm preparing to blow my load over this.

Simultaneous worldwide release never happened, just Windows PC for now. Sorry to the Mac Panthers and Sony Defence Force. English, Japanese, German, and French versions are available from the off. No Spanish version is planned, but should the be the demand, a Spanish version will be done. Final Fantasy XIV is not set in Vana'diel, but the races are 'similar'. The trailer above shows Hume, Elvaan, Galka and Mithra. No Taru shown, but they are in the game. The trailer shows a mix of pre-rendered and in game engine footage. The part with the Galka fighting is the standard to expect in game.
Final Fantasy XI has not be affected by the launch of XIV. SE plan to support both, with content continuing for XI. In April 2011, they announced a roadmap for the next 12 months. The game is set up for both party and solo play. Whilst XI could be something of a timesink, the plan is for XIV to allow you do dip in and out of the game as well if you don't have the time to dedicate entire evenings. The plans is to have worldwide servers that are cross-platform and cross-region. So someone on a PS3 in Japan can play someone on a PC in Glasgow. Obviously as the PS3 version is not out yet, the cross platform part hasn't come to fruition just yet. Final Fantasy XIV does not use the PlayOnline viewer, but friends lists can be ported.

Rift is pretty much standard Western Developed MMO fare on PC tbh. Good fun but nowt different in the long term. I've pecked at FFXIV over the weekend:
Picked my Grand Company this weekend and did the quests to become a member of The Maelstrom. I'm from Gridania but went for the Limsa Lominsa Company as they looked cooler and are made up of pirates. 8-) You get a good look at all the other nations but you now know where to go. ;) There's a heap of new gear for each company too. I picked up a rather fetching axe with runes carved into the blade that looks particularly nasty. There's crafting and gathering gear that can be picked up too. Whilst the Foundation Day event is running (another couple of weeks) you can pick up a neck piece that boosts your Spiritbond by 1%. Apparently this is quite a big deal as it lets you level up your Materia (remember those from FFVII?), which is the new system that lets you attached augmented goodies to your gear. The Grand Company quests are available once you hit level 25. Physical levels have been abolished so we can say level rather than rank now. :D
I completed the baby Ifrit quests last night too. You will need a group of 4 to be able to enter the final battle, but I could probably manage to get some help if people need it. You need to travel around initially and beat 6 Notorious Monsters around Eorzea - not too bad tbh. I duoed them with a level 27 dude (I'm 37) and we weren't in a great deal of danger. You then go and kill a Beastman and that unlocks the final fight against Ifrit. After watching one of the best cutscenes I've ever seen in an MMO you fight Ifrit and it's all creamy goodness from there. Quest's open to Level 25 players and is the precursor to the Level 50 fight with the real Primal. It's a bit tasty.
There's a new Level 15 dungeon open, which I've not been in yet.
FFXIV still does not require a subscription.
Got so so much to play.
I really wish I could win the lottery and devote some time to gaming.

My Playstation requires attention, and I managed to get in 50 minutes on RIFT yesterday too.
RIFT doesn't seem too bad. Conjours up feelings of when I first started playing WoW. Lot's of lovely effects like when you level up or collect souls. Much nicer than yellow text in the middle of the screen saying 'Level Up'.

A sub to me suggests a major update, though I'd implement it, use everyone as free testers, and then implement the sub.
Since I've posted that I've played a fair bit and reckon I would be up for subbing. I don't have any active subs for anything else at the moment so I think I'll give it a shot. Now that you can build up to 99 active levequests there's more to do solo and I'm in a great Linkshell who don't mind the fact that I don't live in the game so it's all good. The roadmap gives me inspiration and I like the feel.
Have you played since 1.18 Dante? I'm taking my time as I don't think there's enough to do at cap yet, so if you want to mosh something up to 25 there's loads of good story/adventuring to be had and I'd be happy to co-op it up.
