Flarble Badness! Yes my thread starts here too, testers needed, as ever

Lazy Gunn's picture

Hello folks! Well i've progressed to putting testing versions of the game onto the android marketplace for you folks to tear apart, and by all means be as critical as possible, should you choose to participate

Try the web version here but it might be quite buggy:

http://www.pourfoi.com

Searching for 'flarble badness' on the marketplace should give you two results, one ending with GL1.1 and one dning with GL2

use 1.1 if you have a Desire, Xperia 10, Legend etc as they have weak 3D chips

use 2 if you have a very recent high end phone like an S2, Sensation or a Tegra 2 based chipset, but you can try on other phones if you like

There are quite a few settings you can change from the main menu that might improve performance, most particularly turning the backgrounds off

Some notes:

You can change settings from the main menu from the menus or in game by pressing and dragging awayb from the green button bottom right (A pie wheel selector thing should come out which you drag your thumb over, descriptions appear)

go to level select and tap 'advance' to open up the levels as you wish, then tap the level graphic to load it

Known issues:

On the settings, the left buttons do the settings changing, the right labels show the seting, but incirrectly flash when you tap them when tapping them does functionally nothing

The launcher on level 4 is weird, and the camera can go a bit funny when shaking, looking into that

Sound needs doing properly

Anyways cheers folks if you decide to give it a try! Be as critical as feasibly possible please

I get the feeling getting feedback on this stuff will be akin to banging my head to mush against a brick wall but hey well

I'll grab it later and try and break it.

Managed to get a quick five minutes with this so not to much to report. The game seems to play really nicely, the menus seem a little buggy and on my desire hd the screen kept timing out. I will have a proper go later and see what i can find.

Lazy Gunn's picture

The screen time out is a really annoying thing because i think its beyond my control, the phone doesnt register accelerometer input as a reason to keep the screen on so unless you have the phone set to not time out for longer or you touch the screen every so often it dims.

Can you say which menus were problematic? The sound settings and credits buttons dont currently do anything i can say that

Not sure if its the actual menus or me just not finding it intuitive enough but I'll give it some time later and report back. There are other accelerometer games, like the one that comes with my phone, teeter and that doesn't time out. It's going to be quite difficult to play if you have to change your screen settings every time.

:( Can't get the Web version to work. I can get into a level but no controls seem to work. Will try again in a bit. Good effort though, it looked nice :D

That'll teach me not to read the documentation, found the relevant setting, turned off screen dimming with a line of code, silly me. I think i'll disable the buttons that dont do anything while i'm at my desktop and update at the marketplace.

I 'think' i figured out how to do updates over the marketplace, if anyone notices an update notification or suchlike let me know! Cheers! I redid the screenshake effect its now millions of times better/less buggy and fixed a few things. There still a weird bug with the pie menu thing i cant work out - if you move your thumb straight to the settings slice, it wont register, but if you move it to another and then back, it does. Weird. I'm taking a break from hardcore working on this this weekend i need it, but ill try implement any glaring errors or suggestions as they arise (I'm slightly scared of some possible oversights, like when i switch between building web and android versions, the ball might mysteriously refuse to move based on a setting i forget to change.. there's probably a really simple way round that ill have to look into)

Downloading now.

Seems to work quite well, albeit with quite a choppy framerate, which you said was to be expected on the Desire. One major issue though - at 30Mb it's quite large but doesn't seem to let you move it to the SD card. Is that something you can change or is it outwith your control?

That aside, and having only played the first level once, I'm impressed.

Lazy Gunn's picture

Are you using the GL2 or GL1.1 version? If you turn the backgrounds off on the gl1.1 its pretty zippy on the Desire but yeah it does get super choppy otherwise sorry about that. If you look on your app manager it should show only bout 400kb installed, i think the brunt of it goes to the sd but some stays internal? Not sure but from messing with leahs it doesnt all go on internal it seems. As far as i know its out of my control but i could try forcing sd card access and seeing if that helps, i'll set it on the next update

And cheers! Impressing you is quite an achievement so i'm chuffed aha

I tried to get it to work on my PPC mac 10.3. I have that program you need already installed (Unity is it?) as i was playing other stuff via it on that mac.
But it wouldn't open, I DL'ed the file then it wouldn't work in the browser, I tried several different methods to get it to work but no joy.

As for critical feedback I now think I am entitled to add some as I at least downloaded the file and tried to play it...it needs more space marines and pink lasers.

Er, 2. I thought I'd downloaded the 1.1 version but apparently I haven't because I am a bellend.

Unlikely's picture

FFS, now I can't download the correct one because my phone claims it's full, even though I've moved a bunch of things onto the SD card in the last couple of days.

did you delete the old one? i find moving stuff to the SD card can be a losing battle to be honest!

Sometime in the next 12 months I am going to have to bite the bullet and upgrade one of these macs.

Yeah, I think my phone's a bit mental at the moment. I've got to head out now but I'll hit with a mallet later or something.

The Desire is a right cunt for internal space its infuriating, im constantly faffing with leahs to get anything that isnt her social app bollocks installed

lazy gunn... i'm intrigued. quick question: how long have you been programming/developing games for prior to this game?

i don't have an android device, but am looking into getting a ios device soon.

and no: i'm impressed by what you've achieved, and was wondering as to what tips (if any) you would be able to give someone who MIGHT take up games development in future... obviously i'm not the the programming wiz-kid you are, but it would be nice to see as to what is possible within a given timeframe.

thanks again...

My website, bitches... 'Cos I'm a STAR. Whether you like it or not!

to be honest its not the sort of idea you idly toy with, skills developed to cover all bases of making a game take years, i started making games in bbc basic around 1988 and ive been working on and off on games since then. I couldnt possibly tell you where to begin if you set your ambitions too high and whattever you do you have to realise that its an extremely time consuming task, ive been working 10-12 hours a day, including weekends, on this game, although much of that was learning i suppose. If you want to get an idea of it, i'd get a simple idea that would be made with some simple software that had you utilise both abilities to create assets (textures, sound) and simple scripting - maybe a few rooms of an adventure game using something like this

otherwisse i dont really know what i can tell you just more, less talk and more walk, talking about stuff means nothing when theres so much work to do
