The Forza Motorsport Thread

JimC's picture

With the announcement of all things Forza 4 at E3, I figure it's time to start getting all excited and unreasonably gushing about Forza again.

From what I've seen so far, it's looking like a progressive and interesting advance over FM3. I like the idea of the Racing Clubs, it'd be great to have an EDGE racing team with which to bitch-slap the internet. The fact that the game will now support 16 players online is, quite simply, the best news I've heard in months (especially as it sounds like they're going to restore the ability for randoms to drop into our games more easily – hoorah for buffoons!). Not too sure about the Kinect features, they seem a touch gimmicky to me, but the 500 car roster (from 80 manufacturers, no less) and that stunning new Alps track really do sound like the business.

Perhaps the single feature I'm most eager to try is the announced co-operation with Pirelli, who have apparently given Turn10 access to all their tyre physics data so that the in-game tyre deformation and wear physics can be accurately modelled. If they get that right, it'll be a game changer as pretty much nothing affects handling as significantly as your tyres.

Loving the idea of the Top Gear integration too, and the full on car-porn feature that let you examine every inch of every motor, inside and out. Hello Dolly.

So, are the good times back? Is this what you wanted from FM4? Have they missed something? More importantly: WHY CAN'T I PRE-ORDER THE COLLECTOR'S EDITION YET, DAGNABBIT?

Alt y'self you Yorkshire git. You're just sore because I corner magnificently (i.e. off'f Bob and the Armco).

If this means a return to WNF with the promise of FNF of yore then I'm all in. I'd pretty much just need this and BF3.
Good man yourself, Jim, how have you been diddling?

It's only bloody Jim!

How are you sir?

F4 looks the mutts' nuts! Day one purchase for me. Hopefully the SP will be fixed after the borked career mode in F3. Just give me more of the same for the online please Mr Greenawalt. An infinite Fujimi please!

fourwisemen's picture

Can not wait for this.

Playing Shift or Shift 2 makes me want to play F3. I can have more fun trying to break a personal lap record and enjoying the handling model more than the ropey physics of most other car racers.

Ltd Edition for me. If there is one. Is there??

If Jim tunes my car I'll play.

Of course I'll tune your car. Unless it's a Citroen, in which case IT'S YOUR OWN DAMN FAULT. Also, sorry I was late on last night, got held up with some design work. I'll be about again tonight, but it'll be late. Should be around tomorrow night too if anyone fancies some FNF. Would be nice to give the old girl a few blasts before FM4 hits...

Mr Bojangles's picture

I hereby announce the Edge Top Gear Challenge.

We'll need to pick a suitably shit car come launch. No assists, manual for the real men, auto for the girls.

JimC's picture

Well, naturally. Let's see if there's something like a bog-standard Hyundai i30 or similar. Also, we absolutely have to create an EDGE Car Club...

Whoops. That job dragged on rather longer than expected. Sorry I didn't make it online tonight, chaps. The perils of freelance work...

I’ve only just discovered the new Edge forum. I’m slightly scared by the change, but since there’s a new Forza in the offing I’d better get comfortable. FNF, you say?

James's picture

I hope they add the ability setup your car between online races like you could in Forza 2. It was frustrating in 3 to have to quit a good lobby just to tweak gear ratios etc.

The demo is certainly addictive, I must have just spent twenty laps trying to catch up with Webbins' drunken sales rep impersonation.

The M5? She certainly is lively.

The handling model is certainly improved, the difference in performance between the 458 in 4 over 3 is a marked improvement. Not sold on the Zonda but it does sound fabulous. I could do with more rumble coming through the pad, when I'm getting understeer, I want to feel the tyres searching for grip, which I don't always get until I initiate some oversteer. Otherwise, more shiny shiny, graphics seem on a par with 3, I'd have to see some static comparison shots to notice much difference. Will see what the full release brings.

Yeh I'm a bit unsure about the graphics. The cars in the select screen look too glossy, remind me of Matchbox toy cars. The actual racing looks good though, and I like the handling after turning everything off and simulation handling on.

Mod74's picture

I think the graphics are a massive improvement over 3. Maybe I haven't played it recently enough. Will be interesting to see some side by sides of the same car on the same track between 3 and 4.

isanbard's picture

I consciously decided not to play 3 recently so this would come to me pretty fresh. The incar views of obvious featured motors (the Ferrari and the Zonda - Clarkson yabbering on about the M5 too I guess?) are very well realised but dunno if they are miles better than before.

I'm off to see how much damage you can do in the race series. Bang full damage on and go for "manual with clutch" ... should do the trick at the very first corner.

Results in: Visible damage model doesn't seem to have moved on leaps and bounds but no great bother. Mainly limited to making my shiney Ferraro look a bit wonky, broken windows and very scratched and grey. A couple of head on collisions (Hello FNF) left the car with 100% damage everywhere except the left rear suspension which was at 22%. Seems the clutch stuck open too so ended up stuck at the bottom of a hill till I hit the race end button and the computer started doing laps in the steaming wreckage.
Clutched gears with the pad seemed a bit odd. Seemed to auto-clutch but you had to lift the throttle to allow it to happen rather than treat it as a race sequential. I imagine if you have a full pedal setup you could do it proper? Will do a bit of research..

That doesn't work 'haak. Have you put just the videoid inbetween the tags?

I decided to go and turn off all aids as i was feeling like a bit of a fraud and my does it make things more interesting. That turn 3 is a doozy.

Was getting pissed off though as it's super hard to put a clean lap in around traffic and some laps I was flagged the second I crossed the line despite seemingly being nowhere near another car. i seem to remember F3 did that as well and I never got to the bottom of it.

On the Rivals event with traffic it seems you win or lose on the first corner and how much traffic you hit on the right/left/right semi-chicane near the end.

IR's picture

I'm sure it's slipstreaming that makes the lap invalid.

That rivals mode does make me feel more and more like I'm buying a ticket for a Nurburgring type event though. Having to dodge the odd dozy local or hopped up Civic seems to add a bit of realistic teeth gnashing rage elements to the TT dryness previously available.
In the full game I'm sure you can blitz round with just ghosts to beat but the hazard laden option is a nice twist for the series. Makes it feel a bit more 'track day' simulator so far. It'll be interesting to see how it's enacted in the full release.

Edit: To go with drafting I was thinking too that clean laps have to actually be on track. There are a couple of corners that have pretty usable runoff areas where you can go all slidey sideways and still fly round without noticing too much that you'd be in an old style gravel trap back in the day. I'd imagine you only get an authentic posted time if you stay well within the marked bit of black stuff.

I like the Rivals section, it's added a very nice new element. It's sort of PGR I suppose, but far better than the overtake challenges ever were. The assists will kill it though. Very few people will be able willing to play without any of them and having a mix of them on the leader board undermines the whole thing.
