Battleship movie gets Activision game tie-in
A video game adaptation of forthcoming sci-fi blockbuster Battleship launches this April, publisher Activision has announced.
Developed by Silent Hill: Homecoming studio Double Helix Games, it's "a blend of strategic naval command and first-person action gameplay."
The game won't follow the movie's plot, instead telling a standalone story set in the same universe. See the screens below for a closer look.
It'll be available on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, with unique Wii, 3DS and DS versions also planned, though they'll be developed by handheld specialists Magic Pockets.
For anyone fortunate enough not yet to have suffered the ear-scouring din of the film's trailer, the source material is a big screen take on the ancient pen and paper strategy game of the same name.
This is what happens when massive companies licence dull pen and paper games. I'm waiting for the TV mini-series of the book based on this game, personally. And the episodic iOS content based on that series...
Somehow the Universal Pictures has shoehorned a massive alien invasion and a gang of box-jawed US military goons into the game's unspoken mythology. It's due on screens in May.

This is what happens when big companies licence dull pen and paper games. I'm looking forward to the TV mini-series based on the book of this game, personally. And the episodic iOS content released in tandem. And the film based on that content...

Seriously though, we're in a recession, and someone not only took seriously the man who suggested a film of Battleship, but gave him piles of money to make it, and convinced some other idiots to make a video game of it?
Then I remembered that the idiots in the second part were Activision, who Call of Duty aside specialize entirely in dross.
