Right,
Anyone else not able to play Gears of War 3 because it's on the new XGD3 format and they have a console that is 6 years old? Or heard about this issue before?
I spoke to Microsoft support - twice - and they said they can fix my hardware for £90.
I mailed the uk head of services to see if i can get an answer to this issue (not going to post that email here, yet). I have an xbox 360 game that will not play on my xbox 360 and there was not one iota of warning that it might not play on my "older" system.
Seems like Queueing up at midnight all those moons ago was not actually a good idea.
I'd like to know if anyone else has seen this issue as I have and 2 of my friends have. Consoles fully updated and cache cleared as suggested by MS etc. I have been told by them this is a format issue withteh older XBOX and will not get resolved with software.
Roll on PS4!

Just replace the drive yourself, i recently fixed my xbox that had a broken drive for the grand total of £13 - £10 for the drive and £3 for the tools. Youtube will show you the path

Cheers - that's one plan we have in mind. my mate has a broken RROD Xbox elite.
So we're going to try that as an "if all else fails" solution.
Thing is - all my other games play fine. so don't want to d!ck it up - not until I've finished Deus Ex.
It's honestly pretty hard to fuck up, as you'll be using a completely new drive id find it really hard to mess that up, the only fiddly bit will be flashing the drives firmware as you'll have to plug it into your pcs motherboard (so the side will be off your pc and your 360 open), although saying that you can get a usb kit to do it these days if you wanna shell out £30 and that must honestly be idiot proof, i cant conceieve of how you could fuck it up that way, unless you go about hacking your xbox open with a clawhammer - i didnt want to pay £30 or faff with my pc so i opened the drives and swapped their pcbs as it was the mechanism that was broken, the firmware was fine, but i think yes, in your case youll be replacing the whole drive and reflashing it
Im assuming this is the case but im mostly kind of sure

Cheers particularly about flashing the firmware. It would be nice to know if this has been done by anyone to fix this issue though.
I shouldn't have any issues swapping out the drives (check out my sig). I'm not gonna try this til next week earliest, when I get the broken Xbox.
The point is we shouldn't have to bodge this if I've taken care of a console for six years.

It is a bit shit but what can you do! And yeah you'll have no probs aha. I cant find anything on google but i just cant see it being anything other than a mechanism/firmware fix as the data connection is reg sata and your mainboard firmware is up to date. In this case you just buy a new drive and flash with firmware you can easily find on the net. If nothing else its worth a try for the cost of a ten quid hitachi replacement - im assuming you already have a set of torx screwdrivers, you need a 9/10, a philips head and something small and pointy for the case clasps and youre go

No, you shouldn't have to do that at all. It would be an outrage if they had put a big warning on the game box. No warning at all and it's a piss take. They should pick your xbox up, do whatever necessary to make it work with the new game and send it back free of charge. It's nothing to do with warranty because your xbox is not faulty. Start quoting some trading standards and consumer rights at them. You have an Xbox 360, that game is made for Xbox 360. They are pretty much defenseless in my common sense but admittedly legally ignorant opinion.
In all honesty, Microsoft should swap the drive for free. Slightly different I know, but when Smash Bros was released, Nintendo picked up your Wii, cleaned your lens and returned it to you for nowt.
We'll charge you £90 because you can look after your stuff doesn't really cut it for me. When someone had an issue with Microsoft before on here after hitting a brick wall they emailed Peter Moore, and I believe he got it sorted. Who has his job now?
Yeah. I feel "stuck" with the whole situation. Not in the circumstance to be able to just buy anew system or shell out the £90 suggested by ms and gears3 was a birthday present from my wife.
I just want to play gears!
I dont know, i think this sort of stuff is covered by the warranty, im sure theyd have been hung out by now otherwise, as you say though its super shit, especially them charging £90 for such a cheap fix

You're the first I'm hearing of it. I just loaded the Gears forum on Epics site, went to the technical issues section and couldn't see a thread stickied for it, which I would expect if this was an issue that was widespread and not just your 360. If there was a genuine issue with original 360s and the game then they would've put out a statement about it.
Is this even in the new format? As when it was announced Microsoft said anyone with an old console that would no longer be compatible would get a free upgrade to the new version.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...

Matty J,
There are one or two threads on epics forums. I had to search for "open tray" and limit the date to the past month.
I also thought it would be more widespread on the net a there are some cases if you search hard but nothing huge.
I just hope someone else with the issue sees this thread.

Gears of War 3 to use new xgd3 Xbox 360 disc format/
ive heard of the issue i saw it in a blog post somewhere, and ms did state it would happen, thing is i think warranty covers all this stuff, after 3 years its out of their care, not that i know what the hell im talking about, gonz would help, oh actually im talking to a law phd on skype atm haha (i know her as a phoytographer not a law person so i forgot), ill ask her

Captain Law Girl says you're screwed basically, its perfectly legal for them to do this as it counts as an upgrade, the analogy she uses is thus:
[17:07:12] Emaan: it's like... you have a computer that runs floppy disks
[17:07:32] Emaan: and then you have upgrades, and they release something that plays CDs, but it won't work on yours
[17:07:36] Emaan: warranty won't do anything
[17:07:44] Emaan: you just need to upgrade to a newer machine yourself
so yeah, not a warranty issue, its legally fine, this policy extends to electronics in general apparently. she teaches law in paris so im assuming she knows her shit

Nah, I'm calling horseshit on that. It's an xbox360. Therefor it should be capable of reading any xbox360 game disc. I'd be reading them the fucking riot act over the phone right now if this was me.

The issue is surely that he's been sold Gears without being told it won't work. More of a goodwill issue than a warranty one.
That's if it is actually the new disc format that's the problem. Is there an error code saying that, might it just be that the drive has gone?

That's analogy doesn't fit for me. It's a closed system.
It's not like he's attempting to play a Kinect game without Kinect. You cannot upgrade the 360 - only replace it.
The game is an Xbox 360 game. It is marked only as such, and does not warn about incompatibility with older models. Hell, they marked 60hz games and games that required a hard drive. This is something they should sort.
shes explaining it to me at length, but basically if its sold as fit for purpose when you buy it, then youre buggered
so, sorry folks, law triumphs over 'common sense' this time
would be good to hear what gonz says though

If it is the change of disc format they should fix it, to reassure future early adopters as much as anything. It definitely isn't going to be a warranty issue though.
There were rumours of the new format not working with some consoles when they tested it, but it was all a bit confusing.
Live / PSN : bigiain_______ Team Awesome
i dont think the law of the matter really gives a crap wether people consider it a 'closed system' or not
xbl: CuckooExtreme Skerret sez: 'pants are a sign of weakness'

Surely they would have to say if they're using a different format. If you bought a cd to play in your floppy drive then yes its your fault because it would have 'pc CD-ROM' written all over it. But as the op said a 360 game is a 360 game unless specifically stated. However I would have thought you're more likely to get your money back on the game rather then the console updated

yes i think it would be more down to the game itself, but youd just get your money back for the game, wouldnt fix the console

I don't care what the law says, her analogy is complete horse shit - it's nothing like this situation.
well shes the one with the law degree not us, there arent special laws for computers with upgradeable bits it seems
xbl: CuckooExtreme Skerret sez: 'pants are a sign of weakness'

Closer to the mark would be something like every new 360 game now needing you to have at least 10GB of hard drive space or they wouldn't work. People would be furious, but I don't think they would have much come back apart from not buying from MS again.
Live / PSN : bigiain_______ Team Awesome
youre talking about PR not microsofts legal obligations
xbl: CuckooExtreme Skerret sez: 'pants are a sign of weakness'

She might have a law degree, but she still gives crap analogies. If this game was released on Blu-ray, it would work, but it's not. It's a new standard, which the discs update to your current drive. The format, DVD, remains the same. Therefore the floppy to CD analogy does not work for this situation.
its only a crap analogy if you dont see it from a law perspective, when i asked her for a law perspective - regarding microsofts legal obligations they seem to be exactly the same thing, so no theres no 'xbox 360 is different to the rest of consumer electronics hardware' clause in legal journals

I could have sworn they were handing out new 360s' to people that couldn't read new discs in old machines
