That time of the year, been a good year for gaming once more with many highlights. As we did last year name your top three games of the year and a little about why they are in the top three.
Mine:
1. Dark Souls: It was never on my radar, I only picked it up because of the forum hype. Utterly and totally blown away by it. Dark, lonely, unforgiving but so addictive. Simply one of the highlights of gaming in this generation. It's that good.
2. Dead Space 2: The first was a claustrophobic nightmare in space and utterly brilliant. Proved that companies other than Capcom and Konami can do survival horror. The sequel, I’d dare say was better than its predecessor. A bigger game overall but just as dark, spooky and scary. Absolutely loved it. Only gripe being the last few levels (if you've played it you'll know what I’m referring to).
3. Skyrim: I wasn’t a fan of Oblivion. Hack and Slash games never really got my attention that changed this autumn. What to say about Skyrim other than wow. A whole country to discover with some amazing environments. Has a game ever looked so encapsulating as Skyrim at night, high in the mountains with the aurora borealis painting the sky hazy blue? Or an ominous looking blood red full moon? So much to discover, so many highlights. Shame there’s no camera to take pictures otherwise the forum would be swamped with pictures and high tales.
Not had time to fully play Deus Ex, MW3 or Batman and haven't even bought Rage, Gears of War, Dead Island etc. A helluva a year for gaming.

Portal 2 will be in there.
Dark Souls for me. It's pretty much perfect.
Mentions go to Skyrim, Crysis 2, Deus Ex and Jetpack Joyride
My problem is that most of the contenders I haven't played yet. Deus Ex is no GOTY to me. Heck, I got to an annoying bit and since then two XBLA titles (Torchlight and Crimson Alliance) and Reach have distracted me.
Actually, speaking of which, Crimson Alliance goes in the list somewhere, as does Bastion and From Dust.
It was a great year for XBLA. And since I didn't buy many disc based games....
DARK SOULS.
Yes, Portal 2 was this year, so Portal 2.
Actually, I think that's the only 2011 game I bought. Yikes. I was sporadically tempted by Dark Souls but it would have thoroughly kicked my bee hind from the off. I'll pick up Skyrim when they've fixed it and I'm sure there's much goodness I'm not even aware of that I'd like a lot, it's just been a matter of trying to finding the time. Arses.

I haven't played many of this year's games, but the one I did buy, full-price (which never happens) was:
Batman - Arkham City
Still got a way to go in it, but on every level so far it's fantastic.
Also enjoying WWE All-Stars as a knockabout brawler, and I think some of the Pinball FX tables came out this year, do they count?
I haven't played Dark Souls.
I hear its good.

SPLATTERHOUSE IS THE WORST (was that this year? I can't even be fucked to check)
Biggest let down is Arkham City. It's not bad by any means, but it was so short and quick.
I was pretty sure it would be Portal 2. But then Skyrim came out...

Runner up - Gears 3's MP.
Honourable mention - Bulletstorm.

Not played From Dust, Bastion or Skyrim, but I expect two of them will join Zelda in my top three.
Biggest disappointment would be Solatorobo.

NB: Skyward Sword is bound to end up as my no.1, but I've only played it for 12 hours so far.
Uncharted 3 was also great, but extremely short and not as good as the other two. Ms. 'Splosion man, Rayman Origins and Super Mario 3D Land are probably in with a shout when I eventually get round to playing them.
GOTY 2011, not 2004 Mod (oh-ho-ho!).
Skyrim romped home by a hundred and seventy lengths this year. After the race all the other horses were shot by their owners, such was their shame.
Dark Souls.
It's a hundred bajillion times better than Skyrim (which is quite good)
Apart from that I can't think of anything that was "holy fucking shit balls amazing".

2. Havent played Zelda yet but im pretty sure its Zelda that belongs here.
Portal 2 lacked the wow / novelty factor of the first, so it could be out. Gears of War 3 still isn't gears OG (or any gears) with dedicated, so it's out. Skyrim is out even though I've not played it, because: lol, really?
That leaves Dead Space 2 (not finished so must be out) and Uncharted 3 (ok that's in).
Uncharted 3, Deus Ex IW, and erm, Portal 2 i guess.
Not a great year. Still got resist 3 to acquire.
Given how much I've played Halo Reach/Anniv since CEA came out, it may have to slot in there. Even though the campaign side of things is technically a ten year old game. Enjoyable, sure, and new bells and whistles sure, but really, I've spent hours and hours on the MP side, and that's 6 mp and 1 FF map and a lot of reach gameplay amongst CEish changes. Doesn't seem right to include it. Dunno. I do know I've played it to death the last two weeks though, and that the TU stuff is moving out into broader reach, which will be AMAZE.
Having not played Skyward Sword, i'll say
1. Uncharted 3 (way better than 2)
2. Dark Souls (not as good as Demon's)
3. Portal 2
Honourable mentions to Deus Ex & Skyim which may overtake Portal 2 once I've got a bit further into it.
