Just completed...

Well this stretched to 104 pages over the course of the last forum, and I've just finished a game so what the hell, here we go.

Timeshift. It's one of those games that I've started, and played on and off for ages. I've not really finished all that many games lately, being stuck in a Rock Band/Halo/Gears loop, but I've enjoyed it enough to keep coming back despite the flaws.

Having started it right at the end of 2009, I'm glad to have finially finished it, especially since I managed to claim all of the single player achievements on the way. I'd probably have gone through it quicker on a lower difficulty, but it at the very least made me notice the games I've got that checkpoint well.

Anyone out there just finished something?

LA Noire.
Crap ending, but never mind, at least I finished it. Did find the AI of the drivers a bit shit at times.

I thought the Mission Completed thread was the new Just completed. Oh, and you seem to be missing an 'l'. You can use that one if you like, I have plenty.

I look for that as well, but couldn't see it. Meh. I've used your 'l' anyway.

Finally polished off Fallout: New Vegas. Damn, one buggy game, terrible animations and awful set pieces. Loved every second of it though.

I should probably make that my summer mission.

Just finished the Super Series on Dirt 3. Still got the individual championships to tidy up. Loved it, but still want a proper wrc game from Codies. Can't imagine it'll happen though :-(

Metagonzo's maze avatar. Quite enjoyable, but it was over all too quick. Perhaps a sequel in the works??

The Infamous freebie. Enjoyed it a lot, although was getting a bit samey towards the end so won't bother with the sequel just yet. In your faces Sony, trying to hook me with a freebie then sell me the sequel!

Brink. Made no sense and took 2 nights so I'm just guessin I completed it. But what if?... No, no they're all done.

Infamous
The impossibility of getting a clean kill means that the combat is often frustrating, consisting of bouncing enemies around on the ground. The sniper rifle is particularly poor in this respect. Surely a headshot should result in a straight kill?
The city is well designed but doesn't have much in the way of character. The gradual reclamation of the streets is an interesting mechanic and was later used to better effect in AC:Brotherhood. There were a number of glitches and bugs which occassionally meant restarting the mission.
The soundtrack by Amon Tobin is excellent. However, characterisation and plot are juvenile and the moral choice system is often illogical. There was one particular choice which showed potential and didn't simply reflect the colour of your lightening bolts but because the characters are so two-dimensional it didn't require much thought.
I have mixed views on the end boss. On the one hand, he is repetitive and his seemingly one-hit kills are frustrating. However, it is not difficult to learn his moveset and how to react accordingly.
Overall, there were some interesting game mechanics but it doesn't offer anything truly distinct. It is a shame that the sequel doesn't look to add much more. The inclusion of New Marais (New Orleans) looked set to give the game some much needed character.

Mass Effect (yep the first one)

Had this on the shelf for a long time and finally got around to playing through it. Was thinking of skipping it and going straight into the sequel but glad i made the time for it now.

Moved onto the sequel which already seems superior in many ways but may miss some of the rpg elements that have been sidelined.

Half Life 2: Episode Two
This was a fantastic experience with a series of memorable moments (including the antlion nest and the roadblock) right up until the final battle in the open space at the end. The combination of overly complex controls for the car and bombs, combined with the frantic pace really didn't work for me. The chilling sequence at the end makes up for it though. Roll on Episode 3 or a sequel proper.

Fallout: New Vegas - Old World Blues. I don't think I've ever laughed with a game so much (as opposed to at, which is definitely a danger with Obsidian). Though some of the missions are fairly poor and there's a lot of seemingly unrealised potential (areas which look really interesting but where nothing happens) the writing and characterisation are fantastic!

Mass Effect 2 - Lair of the Shadow Broker. Bought it in a sale at some point and only just got round to playing it after finishing Mass Effect 1 for the second time. It was excellent! Nice and varied locations, plenty of content and a satisfying conclusion. Worth every penny/point. Several funny references to the first game that i enjoyed as well.

Limbo - delicious treat of a game. Only cheated once (twice).
Undead Nightmare - totally rubbish ending and very repetitive game. Although riding around the world they've created still blows my mind. Stunning detail.
Crysis 2 - boring, boring game. I'm getting so disillusioned with FPSs.
What next? Maybe LA Noire.

Finished the main story in LA Noire last night. I still maintain that the overall feel, ‘set design’ and atmosphere of the game are excellent – helped in no small part by what I thought was an outstanding score and soundtrack which really helped the game find its sense of place.

However.

What, in actual fuck, was going on with the final quarter of this game? A complete sidelining of the main character, a switch to a totally different protagonist (and actually, a far more compelling one if I’m honest – I’d rather be a PI than a cop) and a wholesale abandoning of the core mechanic of the game – that of evidence, interrogation and decision making – in favour of some extremely shonky 3rd person action? Holy shit.

There’s a fantastic game out there that’ll make use of the brilliant facial capture tech – but this certainly wasn’t it.

Because of the state of this place, we've all buggered off to www.thebearandbadger.co.uk - come and have a look around!

Yeah the whole final act is a bit odd, and did reveal how shit Phelps actually was as a protagonist! I wonder if they worried they would alienate the Rockstar audience if they didn't put in some massive, action packed finale or something. Perhaps they thought bringing down the big scum in LA through actual honest police work was boring? Or maybe they were trying to highlight that Phelps was never going to be able to do it from within the force.

This website and forum just annoy me, page keeps jumping around while loading all shitty stuff and its slow. Slow on my PC so must be crap on my iPhone too. I think I'll become an occasional lurker and poster. Anyway...

Gears of War 3 - XBox 360

Finished the campaign on Hardcore last night. Loved it, easily the best campaign by far. Shooting is great, setups are great, atmosphere is great, visuals are awesomelicious, whole campaign was exhilarating.

Only complaints were that it was too easy on singleplayer Hardcore, and Act 4 seemed a bit off the pace (slower), plus I still don't like the bloody on-rails driving sections. Apart from that, bloody great. Onwards to Horde and Beast modes before eventually doing co-op on Insane.

Took about 30 hours to complete. Can't fault most of the content but the rough edges did get a bit annoying near the end.

Gears of War. First played this a few years ago and absolutely hated it. Came back to it recently and really enjoyed it once it got going, although I did struggle on the very last boss. Now on to Gears of War 2, which I started ages ago and loss interest in. I'm currently on the worm interior level which is pretty poor to be perfectly honest, but hopefully it will maintain my interest as if it becomes to repetitive I will lose interest and get distract...................'Ooh shiny red ball'

Flashes of brilliance all wrapped up in silly amounts of monotonous gameplay and the least charismatic voice acting I've heard in a while.
Such a shame, considering the promise it had.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

It's good but, for me, nothing like game of the year material and doesn't touch Portal 2 or From Dust (both of which I played through again, straight after finishing - Portal 2, 3 times). I've no doubt I'll like Arkham City, Skyrim and AC: Revelations better, too. Still, it managed to be an excellent sequel to the original; it kept the same feeling and improved on things. There's enough depth left that I expect I'll happily play it again in the future.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7

I wasn't sure whether I'd actually finish this but pushed through last night. I was left feeling very meh. Whilst the ending is quite nicely done, and the cutscene on top of the cannon was amazing, the actual game was a bit boring.

In particular, the battle system starts to feel very one-dimensional after a while and I'd resorted to skimming walls to avoid encounters by the end of it.

Have Persona 3 and Final Fantasy Tactics vying for my attention now, but my head may have been turned by Disgaea 2! Never played the series before but it looks awesome.
