Edge Forum's very own Minecraft server is up and running!
Server address is 85.236.102.40:29065
For voice chat, download Mumble, then point it at 85.236.100.59, port 20937

The server uses a whitelist for access, so post in here if it's not letting you in

There is a collective Clan Pay pot if you'd like to contribute to server costs. Says Elm: "You need to quickly sign up with multiplay, and can then pay with PayPal. Any money you pay goes into a pot that only gets used for server renewals, so you're not feathering any slush funds. Also means you can pop a pound or so in when you can afford it, and it'll be kept safe until needed."

I'm awful at crafting anything on Minecraft, but I often just load a local server with my brother and explore the Edge forum world and Ghibli World. Both are brilliant for exploring and I'm shocked at some of the things you can build.

Will it be Kinect only on the 360?

Right then, let's see about getting some videos on here.

Most recent (but already out-of-date) video of the server railway:

The Great EDGE Expedition:

"Ah ha! There's some sport!"

"To the shooting gallery...."

"How you like me now?"

Good work, videos – hurray!

Already posted on the site a while ago, but here's a vid of the results of our time spent with Minecraft Pocket Edition, and the entirely immodest Church of Edge:

That tower (in the picture in the old forum) is mine!

Also, I should have built my proper abode closer to the main area in epic falls as I'm being edited out of the pictures by the scenery.

Diluted Dante's picture

I'm proper happy with the saloon now. That I've accidentally built a firing range is a delightful bonus.

I just loaded up the final backup of the second server map (the one before the one that's on the server now). Shame it seems to have been badly hit by creepers just before being backed up!

EvilRedEye's picture

Guys, I was bored so I made a new image for the OP. It includes all three server maps so far!

Also, it might be worth pointing out in the OP that people need to get whitelisted. And we don't have PMs at the moment so it isn't possible to PM Elm about server costs.

vicinity_of_pie's picture

Heh, anyone else notice dragons are coming to minecraft?

metagonzo's picture

I just built my 1st portal on this server and when I enter it, it does the wobbly, wooshy thing but I don't actually go to the nether. Are there common things that I don't know about that could cause this or am I going to have to wade through a million forum threads?

(I've tried it in 2 different locations, both at epic falls but a fair distance (30ish?) apart)

vicinity_of_pie's picture

Don't walk through it, stand in it until the wobbly, wooshy thing goes away and you are transported.

edit: Wait, i'm guessing you have used them before, but on the older server then? As far as I know, nothing has changed. Could be just the server playing up.

metagonzo's picture

No, that's not the issue. I do stand, I go nowhere. Thanks all the same though.

vicinity_of_pie's picture

Too quick, yeah I realised after I posted you probably already knew that.

Nice one, updated the OP. It's interesting to see how the worlds have changed, going from everyone building ridiculous homes and statues solo to more cooperative and functional projects.

One thing I noticed when trying to take the pictures was how everyone's buildings have got progressively more spaced out with each map. The one for the first map has most of the stuff on the server in it. Doing the second one was difficult because the settlement was split up, with the bridge in the middle. With the third one, that's the only place in the main town in the current server where there's a collection of buildings close together.

metagonzo's picture

I do love that 1st pic. Ah the memories.

I've been back to a portal (at LavaPool St. Station) that I know used to work, that's not doing it for me either.

When someone gets the chance can they have a go in one and see if it's just me for some reason? There's the one at Lava, one in the centre of Epic Falls by the bakery or maybe someone can report success (or lack thereof) in a portal of their own.

Thanks in advance folks; it's annoying me now.

EvilRedEye's picture

Yeah, it's not working for me either. Does the swooshy animation but the Nether never starts to load.

DOes the Tractoria portal work?

I don't think any portals work. Not got to the Nether since 1.8.

Coincidentally, just spent a frustrating lunch trying to make obsidian.

Don't know what the trick is – all I succeeded in doing is making the waterfall near the entrance to Epic Falls much larger.

I had 2 buckets of lava to try make it work.

Obsidian needs lava source blocks or water source blocks to form I seem to remember. Any old lava and water will probably just make cobblestone?

Gamertag: isanbard
metagonzo's picture

You need water to run over a lava source block, that block will then become obsidian. If you just flow them into each other they do indeed make cobblestone.

Vastic's right about the portals, mal confirmed it the other day. Hope it gets sorted soon.

See, I was trying all sorts of methods – lava onto water, water onto lava etc.

The only time it worked was when I accidentally emptied a lava bucket onto water and made one obsidian block...

Apparently 1.9 has new stuff for the Nether so i'd assume Portals will be back for then.

There's some in my storage at my mine in Epic Falls you're welcome to if you really need it.

I find the best way to be this:

Mine untill you find a static lava pool; build a simple channel that will drop water onto a lava block closest to an edge and then drop a bucket of water into that channel. Instant layer of obsidian. Of course, you then have to mine it very carefully because more often than not there's another lava layer beneath. If you hold down shift and lean whilst you mine you usually snatch it before it falls into the lower layer.
When you've cleared a layer, repeat on the lower one.

There's farming techniques on the wiki but I've never really bothered investigating.

Ah cool, i'll give that a go.

Need to get some diamond first as I fell into the lava earlier and lost my diamond pick. Doh.

Well, again; if you're stuck you can take some of mine. I'm sure I can spare enough for a pick.

Gremill's picture

Where's the best places to find diamond? I've never seen any yet.

Because of the state of this place, we've all buggered off to www.thebearandbadger.co.uk - come and have a look around!
metagonzo's picture

Can't remember exactly but it's band goes down to the bottom and starts.... above that somewhere.

You're welcome.

Edit: Below 19 apparently. (seems I have a pathological inability to not answer minecraft questions. Damn you Notch!)

Voices's picture

I found 18 of them yesterday, during maybe two hours of spelunking.

boast

Also, when you're mining obsidian, try mining while you're standing in water. The water usually flows down and changes the lava below the obsidian block you're mining into obsidian before you fall into it. However, a problem with this is that you've got to fight the current while you're mining.

Diluted Dante's picture

I mined down to bedrock the other day and just started digging around and found a decent amount of diamond and gold.
