I really really dislike it :(
I like to flick through and read bits of interest - yet nothing seems to jump out with this design. Looks so flat and uninteresting. Probably works ok if you sit and read cover to cover - but I don't want to do that dammit!
The reviews and hype sections just look like a bland corporate off the shelf InDesign template.
Its awful in ways that I'm finding it really hard to articulate.
To steal from Curb - its just a big bag of wrong.
The words are usual high standards tho .
Peace

Piss.
C'mon it's on the front page man.
http://www.edge-online.com/forums/videogames/edge-40-has-anyones-subscription-copy-arrived
I do not like the new design at all. The articles are lacking and the comments section has completely died. I've been coming to this site for about 4 years and have been a frequent commentor (for better or worse if you ask some of the other people well-known in the comments section). Well, since the site relaunch, the comments section has died and it seems interest in the site as well. It's unfortunate because a lot of the reason I came to this site was to talk games with fellow gamers and that has all but died since the relaunch and I'm sure site hits have taken a hit, too (no pun intended). I think I've seen maybe one comment from 1 of the about 25 people I used to talk to on a regular basis in the comments section. Oh well, off to IGN it is.
Most of the regular commenters were complete buffoons anyway.
The main issue holding NuEdge back is the appalling state of the forum. Nobody wants to move across from the old one and because there is no activity (not to mention the lack of functionality) very few new people will be signing up.
LOL So you go from Edge to IGN? LOL Horrifying.
Well, there is no one here anymore. It's like the new site is worse so everyone's leaving. I just want to talk games and if there's no one here to do that with or at least very few here, I gotta go somewhere else. Gamasutra is nice, too. I'll make a profile there.
Try Giantbomb, the site is pretty amazing and the members are cool.
I am see no commento, oh noes, you gais suck.
Try here for now.As soon as they sort out this forum, there will be a lot more activity. There has been movement of forumites into the comments section, but we've all reatreated back to the old place because that one works, and this one doesn't.The fact that basically all functionality aside from posting comments has been stripped from former commenters hasn't helped either.
Signed up just to say the new designs terrible. If they wanted a change they should have gone with the original mag design.
I have signed up for what appears to be the same reasons as the previous posters.
I am unsure what I do like about the new layout - the copy is great (it's why I buy Edge). However some of the things I don't like are:
Loss of real estate - the smaller pages make me feel more hurried to read it - the leisurley feel from the wide pages has gone.
Also, the font. Why have you used such a small (6pt?) serifed font? A larger (9+pt) serifed font or for reasons of space a sans-serif font is much easier on my (ageing) eyes.
I do like the "Post Script" section with some of the reviews in "Play".
I realise the cost of printing is much lower for the "standard" size of paper - rather than your old size and I want to keep reading Edge and lower costs keep the magazine profitable. But PLEASE get rid of at least some the serif font.
Thanks
I like the Knowledge section but I don't like using the word Knowledge. I would also like a slightly bigger font. I like the design but I prefer wider mag.
The font is too small! And I can never make it to the hype section quick enough when I'm on the bog, it's hidden in a world of similar pages.
People, Places and Things is the best addition to the magazine. But whilst the Places and Things are from games, the People bit isn't?!
Since Places was Liberty City and Things was Marios coins, shouldn't People have been about a gaming personality? Sonic? Ezio? Shepard? Throwing some guy into the same section as objects or areas made for games made no sense to me!
The new site is shit so i don't comment anymore.
@Strider- I'll try out giantbomb.
I hear of another (old) forum on this site, how/where is it?
I have also signed up to say the new magazine design is terrible - it looks like an budget airlines in-flight magazine!
Firstly, many pages just looks ugly.Very sterile and dull.
Next, the pages with oddly shaped pictures splattered on with a number attached to each picture are annoying. I really can not be bothered to look up what each number is supposed to refer to, I did it once and there was no percentage in it. It takes extra effort on the part of the reader for no reason at all. What is wrong with captions?
Time extended has gone and that was one of my favorite sections.
I am a subscriber in Sweden so it took much longer for the new issue to get to me, I know I am a bit late.
Edge has mulled over countless cases of 'what went wrong?' on software companies, publishers etc and must surely now be doing some self analysis.
The redesign feels like a high-quality brochure from a car showroom to me.
More seriously, I feel like I've completely lost faith in the quality of the writing. Apart from Stephen Poole and maybe Clint Hocking, all the new op-ed type articles seem to be regurgitating stuff about "videogame legitimacy" that we were all trolling forums with when we were 15. Surely the Edge staff have to assume that their readership is a) into games and b) intelligent-ish. I feel like a lot of the new opinion stuff is aimed at bright 11 year olds and written by people who just aren't that into games.
Sorry for such a negative thread to be my first. I've loved Edge since 1998 so I hope I can start to reappreciate it sharpish!!!
I have just received the August issue. It is interesting that they chose not to publish any serious criticism of the new design in the letters page, they must have received some as everyone online commenting seems fairly agreed that it is inferior to the previous look.
I imagine (hope) that the silent majority who do appreciate the re-design are voting with their wallets and are too busy reading the magazine rather than signing up to a currently flatlining forum in order to register their discontent.
After two issues I must say, they are 0 for 2 with covers. The plastic cover over the Wii U came off seconds after I got it, and again overall the pages just seem a bit dull. Once in a while I really like the design but more often then not I am not happy with it. I find myself reading more of games™
Platform in with a classic deployment of the "but 98% of the population didn't march against the war!" argument.
Why were you against the war? Surely if you dislike Western Imperialism so much, you should be supporting the war and Nato's interventions in the Middle-East. After all, these conflicts will ultimately generate hostility and aggression against the West.
I'm from the US and I always buy this magazine on the newstand. I loved the old one but I have to say the new design if so much better at the smaller size and still packs a lot of info inside. I love UK game mags. They offer so much more info and serious in depth look at every aspect of the industry.
Not a fan of the redesign it has the look and feel of an Ikea catalogue, but it did give me an excuse to cancel my subscription. I've got every issue going back to the first, I'm now stuck trying to decide whether to throw them in the loft or take them down the tip.
not a fan of the new look website either, its just a mess of regurgitated single paragraphs of news that appears first elsewhere backed up with stuff that should be in the mag. there seems little point in even commenting on a story as most of the admittedly small community that did exist has now moved on.
Still, it was fun whilst it lasted.
*edit*It turns out that even though I cancelled my subscription on the 16/07 and was instructed to cancel the direct debit myself, I'm now receiving e-mails asking me to resend my bank details as they are having trouble processing the payment.
Is the new Batman cover any better than the last two?
It's worse. God the cover's are ugly with all the text and arty lines and most irritating of all - the '£five' nonsense; how funny/clever is that? It's like the mag is designed by spotty kids in uni after an all-night bender. The contents page is the ugliest thing I've ever seen- I thought it was a one-off but the second issue of the re-design had the exact same format! A few more issues of this and I'll stop buying the mag- and I've bought it since issue one, so if thats how longtime readers feel then surely somethings gone very wrong. And as I've noted elsewhere, its late in the shops for the third month in a row. Not good.
I do really enjoy the photos. My favorite part of the magazine is the previews section, sorry hype section. I like the quality of the images and the format is great, make it more like that.
Personally? I don't mind the new design. Granted, the new non-square shape means my shelves are now rather displeasing to the eye, but it's not bad. Fits in the hand easier.
Also, please encourage more advertisers to include pages of stickers.
The new design is even more pompous and "I'm so in love with myself and design". It's seriously depressing. Do we really need silly blocks of colours all over the place? What happened to the fun? We all like serious debate about games but the magazine is trying too hard to be stylish and cool. Games are supposed to be games - a fun, interesting past time or distraction. Edge is taking itself far too seriously.
