Oh Ninty

Downbeat story to kick things off

$1.3 billion. Yikes.

They're really going through the wringer at the moment. Wii sales dropping right off. Pretty lukewarm reaction to the WiiU (don't feel like it's generated any buzz at all since E3). 3DS sales, then pricing, then slide pad debacles.

Where next for them? Dedicated portable gaming is looking decidedly uncomfortable. WiiU is looking like a this gen machine right at the death of this generation that's trying to court 3rd parties and have the patented "wacky" input scheme that's served them so well in recent years.

Obviously they still have the talent to produce the 1st party games, but shifting the consoles to play them on is looking like more and more like an uphill battle.

I love Nintendo and I think they make quality games but I do feel that they're losing direction.

An HD Wii with full back compatiability and a host of fresh software titles would, I feel, have been enough.

I'm sick of buying the same game again and again just because it's on their new system.

It would be a shame if they went the way of Sega and stopped doing hardware but then again it would save us space in the tv cabinet.

Would you still recommend purchasing a Wii now?

I suppose they are still the strongest family-friendly option.

My wife is a complete Nintendo Fan-girl, so I don't get a choice in the matter.

Edit: I admit, I can't wait for Skyward Sword tho'

If you've never had a Wii before, I suppose there is enough in the back catalogue to justify a purchase, if you're looking to the future, in no way is it worth it.

If you're considering buying a Wii, consider buying a CRT especially for it.
There's definitely a very decent back cat of games that make purchase worthy. The Galaxy games, obviously, also the Trauma Centre and No More Heroes games.

Yeah, with the strength of the DS, their claims that the Wii would get loads of 3rd party support were half-believable, so I was really quite excited to see how it would pan out.

Weird thing is, IMHO games-wise the Wii turned out to be much like the Gamecube (only really worth it for the Nintendo-made games), but infinitely more successful with the general public :-/

Seems like it was a kind of "perfect storm" of family-friendly accessible gaming at the right time with the right advertising that was really very different to anything else out there at the time. WiiU feels like it'll suffer the same as the 3DS - hampered by its predecessor's success; why bother getting the sequel when you're either still enjoying the current console or it's been gathering dust for many months :-/

There's plenty to recommend buying a Wii.

Xenoblade Chronicles, SMG 1 and 2, Sin and Punishment, Punch Out, Dead Space Extraction, Zelda, Metroid Trilogy. In fact, SMG2 is alone is enough, and Skyward Sword really should be the clincher.

Those losses do look bad for Nintendo, but I don't think we've ever seen a hardware manufacturer let a home console slowly die before the new machine is ready. The 3DS has launched poorly, but it's too early to call it a disaster. Even if the Wii U is a Gamecube style fans only machine, Nintendo can probably afford that.

Much as I'm sure lots of people would like them to start being a software house for MS and Sony, it's not happening soon.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo have all the money in the world, so I doubt they're going to fold their hardware side anytime soon.

I haven't bought a Wii game since Mario Galaxy, which I really enjoyed in all fairness. I can't see myself ever purchasing another Nintendo console, online play is too important and Nintendo have always been terrible at it. That noob Shyam (has he transitioned across to here?) always used to tell me about amazing new Wii games but he was always playing Xbox live when he did so.

That "loss" hardly makes a dent in Nintendos wallet. DS and Wii, peripherals and games have sold like crack, not too long ago.

The Wii U looks promising to me. I'm gonna be the wait n see guy on this one.

For me the Wii will forever be that little box you can chuck away in a cupboard for 12 months only to dig it out for 30 hours of incredibly polished gameplay which reminds you exactly why people are so sick of men with guns gameplay.

I'd rate LKS and Galaxy very highly among my games of the generation and I still think Metroid Prime might be my favourite game ever. (Yes I know it wasn't Ninty but I doubt Retro had 0 outside consultation). I got rid of my Wii but I still nick the family one to play these sparse releases which feel far more special than each iteration of GoW or Assassins Creed, mainly becuase even something like Mario, who has had countless iterations, still manages to be fresher on release than the third installment of a current gen franchise, precisely becuase they are ready and willing to stretch the formula into places unknown.

Nintyendo gon' be roun' ferever.

Adn not judst for fagsd.

Still a big loss, but at least it's under $1bn.

Going from a £693 million profit to a £164 million loss in one year is pretty fucking bad.

But the shareholders will have had the dividends on those profits. They won't get as big dividend on a loss. They don't really care how much money a company has made it's what they are and will make that's important.

Mr Knight's picture

I thought this loss was largely currency related.

That said they do have testing times ahead after pretty much having it all the own way for the last 6 years.

If you don't change anything, sure, but if Wii sales stop and you plough loads of money into developing/announcing the WiiU and releasing the 3DS, then you'd expect a bit of a dip.

NIntendo's fortunes have been up and down more times than I care to remember. It's what they do.

As for Wii, I'd agree with what's been said - I play it less than 360 overall, but it probably has more of my favourite games of the last 5 years on it. I've played more 360 games, but I've kept more Wii games.

If they sorted out their online and made their machine less hackable they could quickly make a profit.

They hit big with the Wii, 'non-gamers' lapped it up, those same casuals are not going to go crazy for the WiiU. They'll just stick with the Wii and Wii Sports that came with it. It was always going to be hard to follow the Wii unless they discovered the 'next big thing', the drop off in sales was inevitable too with saturation. Hopefully when I get board game market data in the future, they'll stop referring to slumps in sales as 'the Wii effect', wankers.

I could never understand why they made the 3DS look exactly the same at the Lite. You can have all the new fangled 3D-o'vison tech in the world, but when the external case looks the same as the one you've got in your pocket, the question is: "Mummy, why do I need one of those?".

They should've gone for a scallop-type design instead.

True, obviously the 3DS sold far less than they thought it would. Just loosing £800 million....ouch.

£579m actually.

EDIT: They're claiming this is down to the strong value of the Yen hurting their overseas profits.

They've got to embrace the future for fuck's sake. There still isn't a way to link all your nintendo machines to one account. Why don't my VC console games work on both (3)DSi and Wii like Sony does with the PS1 and Mini range? Buy them again? Fuck that, I say.

If portables and to a lesser extent consoles really are on their way out, at least both Sony and MS are ready for such a future.

Schmoek's picture

In the long run I think Nintendos strategy is sound; seperating the console from the game experience but in a more personal way, kind of like a local cloud system.

I see the Wii Us potential in shifting how people think of accessing games, streaming and switching them from one Display to the next but - in contrast to OnLive - locally driven. The Wii was positioned as a family device, something that is shared while the PS3 and XBox position themselves a a very personal, dedicated high-end machines that you might share in local multiplayer sessions but are much more probable to use online.

Of course Nintendo's Online service is nonexistent but that is also part of why we see the Wii as not comparable to other current gen consoles (And not only because of the graphics). The Wii U continues that notion I believe, trying to establish itself as a household device, something that isn't just your property but that is also shared (Kind of like a TV in a family household).

The problem is, no one gives a flying fuck anymore. No one sane anyway. I'm not sure I'd buy any new console that came out next week. Why? I just wanna play Gears/ FM2012 on the lappy /w*nk and then sleep.
