Can anyone help me out please?
I'd like to change my HDD for a bigger one, preferably 1tb+,but I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for or if it's possible to go that big.
Has anyone replaced theirs? Have you gone as high as 1tb? What do I need to look out for? I know it's 2.5inch SATA but do things like rpm and cache matter? Also I've read hdd's greater than 500gb are slightly thicker so would this be a problem?
Thanks for any help.

I'm fairly certain you can put a 1tb hard drive in there, but I'm not 100%.
I replaced mine, it's totally fine as long as you get a 2.5 SATA as you already know. 5400 rpm is what it suppose to run at, I've seen 7200 rpm work with no issue but I feel like it was a bit noisier, if that makes sense. I also thought there was virtually no difference in speed.
I am pretty sure it does not matter how big the actual HDD is.
Agreed with Strider.
Anything above 5400 is apparently risky

Cool, thanks guys. Just thinking though,I've been told I'm getting one of those Android Tablet things. Would I be better off considering some sort of network storage? The PS3 and tab would then be able to read from that wouldn't they? Any experience with that chaps?
Should be able too. I've got my entire music library shared, and the PS3 picks it up fine. It struggles with some video formats, but Tversity usually sorts that out.
Go shared storage. It's only a minor irritation but I'm currently without my media server and listening to music on the PS3 hard drive means you can't do anything else with it. When streaming though it still plays in background when doing other tasks
Yeah I'm thinking it'll make life easier so if I wanna listen to some music or watch a movie,I can go with the PS3 or the tablet if it's just for me. Any advice on shared storage? Easy enough to set up?
I was using TVersity on a very modest system (1800 Athlon, 512 Ram) and it ran fine. That modest system will become my fulltime media server when I get a new PC and I found no problems with it. Transcoding on the fly, launching files everywhere, even to external locations, albeit very slowly. Just remember your security and keep shared files separate. Some use ps3mediaserver, I haven't so can't compare
Hmm,that'd involve leaving a PC on all the time though. I was thinking along the lines of a network connected harddrive. I think the newer Iomega Screenplays have a network connection on them so something like that? I am hoping in the future to hide my PC away behind the TV and maybe use my tablet as a monitor the odd time I use it. Is this possible? Also, you mentioned sending files to "remote places". Do you access your files away from home? Is it on another Internet connection or a cellular connection maybe?
Both, I've been able to pick up files either from a friend's computer or onto a mobile phone. As far as leaving it on all the time, it's no real buggy. If you've an old shitty tower, pack the fastest drives you can into it, set it up, then take the screen away and stick it under the stairs. You can move files onto it from another sytem. It shows up as a network drive
The alternative is an all in one box, a narworked storage thing. I've not used one so don't know how upgradeable they are. Personally I prefer the flexibility my old tower gave me, but the onebox solution is likely far easier to set up
I put a 640 gig drive in mine, after formatting and the PS3 taking its bit for system use, I've got 529 gig free on it.
Just so you know.
Cool, thanks guys. I might end up going with the tower stored away then. Rich, was there any trouble fitting the 640gig? Is it any thicker than the original drive?
I just made sure that I got a 2.5" inch SATA drive and it fitted straight in.
This is the exact one I got..

I have read that some of the larger gig (750+) sata 2.5 " drives are a little big bigger physically and these dont fit in - but that might be just a load of flannel that I read.
EDIT: Who has nicked my punctuation?
Sorry guys, my post above has all the punctuation missing I dont know why.
Ok thanks don't worry punctuation is overrated it only takes a minute to figure out what someone means
