The relative merits of Drop7 and DropZap

Ben Maxwell's picture

My first thread, so go easy on me, yeah?

But more to the point, are there any other people out there playing both games? Drop7 gets the legacy vote from me, but DropZap/2 - despite it's ugliness and overt Drop7 inspiration (DropZap - _ap = Drop7, afterall) - is just as addictive.

I'd like the author of Zap to stop deleting top scores with each update though...

Anyway, which one does it for you?

Pssssst, my top Drop7 Hardcore effort is 752,471 - any takers?

I just looked on Google (not the ugly man, the child labour website search thing) and it looks like Tetris.

ON STEROIDS.

Played 7 to death. Got zap but never played it more than a couple of times. How the hell does it work?

Ben Maxwell's picture

Sorry for the slow response, out for a meal with my girlfriend. So, Drop7 is a fantastic puzzler - Tetris on steroids is a nice description, though its actually remarkably calming for the most part. It's an iOS game from Area/Code, recently snapped up by Zynga. But let's focus on it's Area/Code origins, yeah?

Zap has similar aspirations, but is all about reducing block sizes with 'lasers', whereas Drop7 keeps it pure and all about the numbers. Here's a link that may or may not work:

Ooh, a fancy Edge logo and a girlfriend? Now you're just showing off. Actually, I did check out the webdemo of DropZap, which can be found here: http://dropzap.appspot.com/ and it seemed like fun. However, I don't own an iOS device so, um, that's all I really have to add.

Ben Maxwell's picture

It's a system seller - get yourself an iPhone. I suppose you could always play the free online version, though - it comes with bonus 'absence-of-24-month-contract' content.

Ah, jolly good. You'll have to excuse us old skool forumites as there's probably a fair few of you guys we've never come across before. You should all get together on your side of the fence and do an introductions thread for the EDGE peeps so we have a better idea of who you all are and what you all do.

Well, those of us who didn't post much in the forum still lurked in the background, so I guess we've got the upper hand when it comes to recognising names! Nice to see everyone pooling into one place - once we've pulled this new forum's socks up, it should be a great place. I'll put the intro thread suggestion to the team. We're shy, though, you know...?

Yeah, it's just iOS - I'm not sure if there's an iPad specific version, but Zynga just released a retina display take on the original, so should look handsome blown up. If Tetris warms your cockles, Drop7 will be more than welcome in your game collection.

Dropped 7

meh, frigging iphone takeovertheworldshit.

I want to play something on a system with real buttons, touch screen just doesn't have the responsivity you need a high level play on any game.

Playing tetris on my n900 or iphone.. shudder.

Based on the web version, this should work fine on a touchscreen. It doesn't rely on quick reactions and accurate movements, it's more strategic than anything else.

hmm, ok, so i've just got an ipad2 last night from my fiancee. Its not got a simcard in, i suppose i need one of those before i can start downloading stuff (plants v zombies, peggle etc)?

Maybe not the thread to ask but a crash course in getting started would be great. Its sim free and from moscow if that makes a difference.

God its hot.

sorry, i've just looked a youtube video of this game, and sorry yoss but as strategic as it looks it looks very much like a game which needs a fair amount of precisionI and accuracy at the top speeds. Ala meteos at after about 6 minutes :D:D:D

I like the concept, its a bit like the version of tetris ds called touch meets the version of tetris delux called bombs.

doesn't look bad but will infuriate me at the top level if i dont have a dpad. Are there ways to plug in pads to ipads/iphones?

Nope, no reactions needed. You can take as long as you like for each turn - it's chess in a well against The Wall. As for getting games on to the iPad without a sim, I think you can just buy them through iTunes and sync with your PC/Mac.

Dropped 7

cool.

DId you see that guys set up for the 5/4/3 combo? It just looks like creating setups for chains. How hard can that be? ;)

Get your arse over to the Apple Thread II.

But in the meantime, you can get a SIM card from any of the phone providers and pop it in. You may well need to update the carrier settings once you've done that, which is just a case of connecting it to iTunes. And no, you don't need a SIM card to start downloading, you can do it all through Wifi. In fact, for larger downloads (and I think this applies to all apps, but I can't remember), you have to do it through wifi.

DLed both. Drop7 has a free and a paid. Not sure what the difference is but the free version seems fully featured.

Anyway, it's gonna be a problem game, like GameDevStory. Starting to get to grips with it now and getting up to 200,000 on Hardcore.

May be a while before 750,000 is reached.

I think the free Drop7 has ads and doesn't let you compare friend scores, not sure though - I got the paid one for free because I already had the original. But yes, it is a problem game, and before long it will consume every spare minute of your life. I even try to get in quick games when walking to the drinks machine at the other end of the office. I really need help. I'd be very interested to hear how you think 7 and Zap compare.

Dropped 7

Shinji's picture

7 is definitely my preferred choice at the moment. Much clearer in concept and the Hardcore mode is wicked, very one more go-ish.

Zap, also enjoyable, but there's a bit too much going on (only given it maybe 30 minutes though) and I was finding fairly tricky to work chains together and relied more on luck.

Still with both of these and Words that's my iOS gaming dominated for the next couple of months.

The official Drop7 account started following me on Twitter a couple days ago and I felt like I'd won at life.
A bit annoyed, however, with the game's FB leaderboard functionality. I got a really high score while playing offline and now it won't update my leaderboard score until I beat my offline high score while playing online.
Seriously you guys, this is my favourite iPhone game of all time. I even managed to get my non-gamer wife hopelessly hooked.
