This topic here does what it says on the tin, really. I was recently thinking of what music I'd play as an accompaniment to some gameplay footage of ICO on youtube (I'm too lazy to ever do it, mind), and was quite stumped. Something like Led Zeppelin's 'Babe I'm Gonna Leave You' crossed my mind at some point - more for it's warm folksy feel than for any of it's lyrics. (Don't fret - I was into Led Zeppelin till around the age of 16 or something) Anyway, what music would you play when FIFA's soundtrack just doesn't cut it anymore? Have you ever played Boards of Canada over Super Metroid, just to have it add to the atmosphere? Or what about playing Ocarina of Time while listening to Fleet Foxes's 'Blue Ridge Mountains'? P.S.: Jet Set Radio had a wicked soundtrack, if i remember correctly. Now if only I could dig up the old Dreamcast again...
What do you listen to while you game?

Why would you ever go against EA's choice of music?
Native American music!
YOU FUCKING RACIST!!!!

Mhm, I never thought of that, actually. The people working at EA? Geniuses, the lot of them!
Found that the mixed version of Simian Mobile Disco's latest is perfect for halo. Nothing like lasering someone to some contemporary acid.
I still have some songs from Jet Set Radio on my iTunes. Super Brother!
I mostly listen to my wife moaning at me about how much time I spend gaming.... its not exactly musical but i suppose if you added a drum & bass beat it might compliment the sweet lyrics.
I don't really listen to anything whilst I game? Mario Galaxy 2 would be upsetting with The Downward Spiral playing in the background.
The title might be rather misleading - I actually don't find myself listening to music all that often, either (the exceptions would be fifa, sports games in general). A better question might be, what music would you consider the most suitable track to a level, set-piece, etc...?
Ahhhhhh... in that case, going back to Downward Spiral then! You know in Limbo, when it goes all dark and mechanical with pistons.... and stuff? Reptile minus the vocals would have been so right for kicking in?
Maybe it's because of the title, but whenever I give this song a listen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXoXMjUGHMg), I always think 'Outrun'!
Having listened to the track, I think I know what you mean. I think I would've gone for this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9t8Oex9BpQ), though. I think the claustrophobic, ominous sounds would suit the game well.
If I'm playing sports or racing titles, I listen to podcasts. Anything else and I'll listen to the in-game audio. I used to turn down music and just listen to the sfx, but these days I even keep the in-game music on. Unless it's horrific (hello anything from Japan).
I like drum and bass if I'm playing something that needs consecutive input, say a beat'em'up or shump, I find the intesity of the beat compliments the action. However if I listen to D'n'B while driving I just seem to drive into walls. So instead I might break out the Motown.
I was quite annoyed at the lack of prominent soundtrack, (Something unfamiliar to me when playing R* titles.) when playing RDR, that said it made the tunes that did play after a milestone really enjoyable.
I remember Beach Boys complimenting Super Mario Sunshine perfectly at one point - made that elusive last Shine Sprite an euphoric experience.
I used to play Gears MP to Godspeed You! Black Emperor. More recently I played Just Cause 2 to The Field. What do I win?

I was gonna flag the post about EA choices being good as offensive :)
My Bloody Valentine kiddies...or whatever new piece of vinyl is on!
If i could get my hands on copies of the metriod prime soundtracks i'd listen to them while i played life.
I never listen to non-ingame music when playing games and turn off a licensed soundtrack if there is one. Sounds in games are too important a part of making me feel connected to whatever it is I'm controlling to drown them out with music.

I used to play Black to Godspeed. Somehow, Dead Flag Blues felt very fitting and I still get occasional flashbacks to, well, Flashback if I listen to Nevermind.
More recently, frankly I'll happily listen to whatever it is I I'm currently listening to when I play a game (I have a habit with music of finding a new album I like and then listening to almost nothing else until I get bored of it). If it's decent music, it will never 'not fit' the game, it will just put a new slant on it.
Having said that, punk and emo (and I mean proper, 80s/90s emo, not the crap that's around these days) both seem to work very well with shooters.
Fucking paragraphs fucking broken afuckingain. Fuck.
True dat! Some music seems to give a game unexpected tonalities - just like playing Animal Crossing to N.W.A's 'Fuck Tha Police'... I could swear my avatar walked past Copper with a bit of a swagger when I did that last.
Props on My Bloody Valentine, atomised.
I like to listen to the lamentations of the women of my crushed enemies and nothing else.
I listen to the game while I game. If the game isn't worth listening to, it is either so bad that I stop playing the game, or I just turn the sound down.

Usually the game, unless its the Witcher ; then the Polish version of it.
If its sports game I always go with a bit of instrumental post rock. Explosions in the Sky works well, particularly if you time the crescendo to coincide with the dying moments of the match.
I only mute the in-game soundtracks on certain games. I play the likes of Forza, Trials, Amped and Pro Evo with my own music (nothing genre specific, just depends what I fancy listening to), but stick to the actual score for most everything else - everthing story-based, anyway.
I listen to in game music apart from racing games then its the Essential Mix ( I have a 3 year backlog to listen to) or if im playing games like Fallout then its Coast 2 Coast am podcasts again i have a few years worth stacked up.
The sound of life slowly passing me by.
