E258: 20 years of Edge

To celebrate Edge’s 20th anniversary, we take a look at the past two decades of play, and all of the innovations those years have brought to the game industry.

Our 20-year retrospective begins in Knowledge, where we ask leading developers what they think the most influential game-related development of the past 20 years has been. Then, in our features section, Mark Cerny, Katsuhiro Harada and David Braben share their expertise and experience from their collective 80 years in the game industry.

We also list the ten best consoles from the last two decades, and, in hindsight, we give seven old games a new score – the coveted Edge 10. In Create, we take a look at issue 1 of Edge, with then-editor Steve Jarratt providing insight into what it was like at the very the beginning. However, the future of gaming is just as important as its past, and we discuss the possible technological and immersive advancements of the next 20 years to come.

As always, we’re also keeping a watchful eye on current and future releases as our Play section sees us become a super-powered US President in Saints Row IV, take the stealthy approach (or try to, anyway) in Splinter Cell: Blacklist and get déjà vu in The Wonderful 101. Meanwhile, we offer our first impressions of The Sims 4, Hawken, Ultra Street Fighter and more in Hype.

Edge’s 20th anniversary edition is available now – you can buy a single issue or subscribe in print, or download it on iPad and through Google Play. E258 is half price (£1.99/$2.99) on iPad, iPhone and Android devices via Google Play for a limited time, until September 17.
