Review: Street Fighter IV

Actually, it’s been more than a while: it’s been a good 17 years since Street Fighter II, and nine years since Street Fighter III. In that time the 2D fighter has been somewhat marginalised, and players’ expectations have changed. In this context it’s a minor miracle that Yoshinori Ono and his team have not only stuck to a clear vision of how to take the series forward in 2D, but that Capcom has been able to excite people about it to such a degree.

Today, the situation is very different, so much so that we hardly bat an eyelid when Miyamoto says: “To tell the truth, I have this big ambition for Wii Music, that it can eventually be something so influential that it might be able to influence what music means in the world.”

But here, at the end of it, another couple of 10s later, it hardly feels like one.

It began with the videogame industry at the height of self-confidence, achieving record worldwide sales in the first half of the year and with the likes of a new GTA and Metal Gear Solid looming on the horizon.

In fact, we’ve been trying to do this, on and off, ever since the game’s official announcement at E3, and we’ve more or less settled on something that is a bastardised take on the PSP iterations – and not only because we’re aware that the game is being built by Rockstar Leeds, the studio behind Liberty City and Vice City Stories.

Complex meshes of secrets, lies and workarounds that create from the nothing of mathematics the something of space. After all, computers haven’t yet a chance of simulating proper optics and worlds as intricate as our own. Instead, realtime 3D graphics have developed, year by year, into a portfolio of techniques and effects that are designed to emulate the real world. And now they’re finally beginning to approach that holy grail – if you squint hard enough – the quality of photography.

Top 50 iPhone Games: 50-41

Limitless choice doesn’t always equate to limitless pleasure, as anyone who’s ever spent a bus ride shuffling fruitlessly through the entirety of their record collection will understand. With well over 6,000 games already available on the App Store, it often feels like it’s getting harder to find something worth spending your cash on. This, then, is a list like few others: light on most traditional genres, and overflowing with strange new strains of gaming, from abstract assault courses to maths puzzlers and wrapping challenges.

LittleBigPlanet: The Edge Verdict

If not that then Sackboy, an expressive dress-me-up doll whose arms and head you can move with sticks and tilt, and whose mood you control with the D-pad, will. So careful is the introduction to this overwhelming game, and so reliant is it on paternal, unpatronising presentation, that you wonder if anything is underneath. Later, you’ll wonder if anything isn’t.
