GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo has revealed that Nintendo’s planning to release a major new game later this year.
"We think there will be a Nintendo key property coming out by the end of the year," he told CNBC. "They haven't given us any insight, but they have told us to reserve [shelf] space."
Elsewhere on the software front, DeMatteo said that the retailer thinks that Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 “will be one of the best selling games of the year", while chief operating officer Paul Raines added that DJ Hero and The Beatles: Rock Band have been creating buzz in stores.
*hums the James Bond theme tune*
Do they even have rights to Goldeneye? Plus, they don't have Rare anymore (shit, even Rare doesn't have Rare anymore). Most of the original developers of Goldeneye moved on to now-defunct free-radical. So who knows where they're at now. Has anyone tried to go back to Goldeneye lately? It's damn near unplayable, especially when compared to anything you've played in the last 10 years. But it sure was fun as hell in its day.
I know, I know, just wishful thinking laced with nostalgia.
I haven’t gone back to it actually, I can’t imagine it aged too well. But when it came it out it was a revolution. There isn’t a single concept or game mechanic that didn’t get lifted wholesale from that game and became the norm for all shooters since then. Sniper rifles, grenades, shooting individual body-parts for different effect, cameras that alert guards, layered missions, playable multiplayer, etc etc.
Now I hate Rare, or what’s left of it, for Perfect Dark Zero and the direction they’ve taken with their games. Or maybe I just want another Goldeneye… *sob*
There hasn't been an F-Zero game on Wii yet, so maybe that will be the mystery title.
omg, are you serious Dan DeMatteo?!!
You mean that Nintendo is going to release a popular game around the holidays? *GASP* Well, i wouldn't have believed it unless you told me!!!
Must something waiting the E3 to come out. Even if Pikmin 3 should be in dev for a decent time now, i doubt that it's something Nintendo would rely on as the Big Holyday tittle.
But don't hold your breath, maybe it's another non-game casual thing a la Wii Fit heh. In any case the best atm it's just wait for E3.
Don't we already know that there's a new DS zelda coming out (spirit train, or something?)?
The only things I'd call key nintendo property are mario (+kart) and zelda (maybe metroid and pokemon if i was stretching), and I guess "key property" suggests software rather than hardware (Wii-i, anybody?)!
hell yeah! game watch collection for the wii!!!
Most likely Pikmin3, but I wonder what other projects Nintendo has up their sleeves...
…probably nothing to get excited about. Nintendo don't seem to do exciting anymore.. just rehashes of old IP and casual fodder. I'll eat my hat if it is actually something exciting and innovative that isn't just some cash cow designed to appeal to the main stream and make their wallets fatter.
Yeah hopefully they'll be completely different and follow in MS's shoes and release something like Lipz or Halo or a Banjo Kazooie game.
I'm having a hard time getting a read on your sarcasm. Are you saying Halo is casual fodder? I can see where you're going with Banjo and Lipz, but Halo? I'm not saying Halo is teh greatest/suxxorz, I'm not gonna say either way, but other than maybe GTA no game is a bigger blockbuster than Halo. Any console manufacturer would love to have a game with even half the sales potential of Halo or its impact on console sales. Wii fit, mario kart, wii play are great and all, but they don't scream blockbuster holiday-game quite like Halo does. Zelda on the other hand...
Wii Fit is a bigger blockbuster than Halo.
Lol. Good one Ken (I hope that was sarcasm!).
If not, and you mean to say it's a bigger blockbuster because it sold more copies (it did) then you missed the point.
Dan said, "I'll eat my hat if it is actually something exciting and innovative that isn't just some cash cow designed to appeal to the main stream and make their wallets fatter."
I think that Wii fit fits (no pun intended) that description better than probably any game ever. I don't think Ken, that even to you, you would consider Wii Fit exciting and innovative to anyone hardcore, especially when compared to a new Zelda, Mario, or Metroid (or Halo).
Nah, blockbuster = sales. Blockbuster doesn't mean exciting and innovative! Never has. And certainly not in the context you used it! You weren't even replying to Dan when you said it; and your use of the term wasn't in reference to anything he said. But rather, your sarcasm detector failed when reading toadwarrior's post and you *inferred* that he was saying that Halo was casual (dunno where you got that from!) and that only GTA might be a bigger blockbuster. Don't try to redefine "blockbuster" after the fact!
I think toad's post would've worked better if he used SingStar, Killzone, and Ratchet in place of Lipz, Halo, and Banjo - being as though Dan is a PS3 fanboy.
I was just stating that Wii Fit, along with the other games you stated - Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii - iare bigger blockbusters than Halo 3. They sold far more and cost a hell of a lot less to develop and market!
Side bar: If you consider Halo 3 to be innovative, then I don't know what to say. Exciting, yes, definitely. But not innovative. Out of the four series you mentioned, I'd only consider the latest installment of Mario to be anything close to innovative.
Oops, it appears I was replying to Dan and Toad.
I can concede the points that blockbusters can be considered any game with good sales. But I still believe Wii-Fit to be a game that sparks no interest in the hardcore when it comes to anything exciting (ok, maybe not innovative). I think the real point was are traditional gamer Wii owners going to be treated to a new exciting game, or are they going to get Wii-Fit: keep-it-off-addition? Would you be more excited for Wii Play: Wii motion plus addition, or a new Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Kid Icaris/Kart/Pikman, etc game? I think that was the original point that was made by Dan or Toad or whoever it was. Is their new big game going to cater to their overwhelmingly larger casual base, or the in-the-minority core gamer?
my mate Dave works at Rare and says that they're working with Nintendo on GoldenEye Wii w00t w00t FTW etc ;-)
