Leading discount website My Voucher Codes UK has said that sales data from its UK retail partners shows Xbox 360 surging ahead of PS3 in the run up to Christmas.
My Voucher Codes UK offers its nine million monthly users online promotional codes or e-vouchers for stores including Game, Gamestation, Currys, Dixons, Comet, Asda, Tesco and lesser know game retailers including Chips, Simply Games, Gameseek and Click A Game. Monthly UK console sales originating from the discount shopping network number in the thousands and possibly tens of thousands, the firm’s PR company told us.
Sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 only marginally favoured Microsoft’s console in August and September, according to Mark Pearson, founder of My Voucher Codes UK. However, Xbox 360 outsold PS3 by almost 2:1 in October and by nearly 3:1 in November.
“A couple of months ago, little separated the two in terms of units being sold through our site, but November has seen a huge surge by Microsoft’s budget friendly console, backed by a stellar PR campaign,” he said.
“The PlayStation 3 is undoubtedly a fantastic console, but Brits are still extremely mindful of their bank balance due to the recession, and although they want Christmas 2009 to be memorable, are seemingly more than happy to choose the cheaper option.
“If sales stay at their current rate, the Xbox 360 will outsell Sony’s console by three units to one, a marked defeat,” Pearson added. “Both companies want their console to be under the Christmas tree this year, but there can only be one winner.”
The firm added that sales of Nintendo's Wii "are down 17 per cent on last year... but it’s still beating Sony’s PS3 in terms of units sold".
i believe philips cd-i will outsell both 360 & PS3 by 15 to 1
Awesome, with your full motion video you are really spoiling us! It's astounding how far we've come.
Looking back at all those gaming and entertainment packages you go have bought into back then 3DO, Megadrive/cd or SuperNES none of it was cheap, so I find it surprising how people slate Microsoft and Sony's products for being to expensive. Personally I think we're getting a bargain.
Nintendo has already won this gen...simple as that!
You means its in the bag....
Meanwhile, across the pond: Xbox 360 Not Wanted As Much As Wii/PS3 Amongst Teens For Holiday
£425
Yet another reason these stories are pointless. On Day 1 you get someone saying 360 gonna be the big seller at Xmas, then by day 2? it`s gonna be the PS3 that`s about to have a sales surge:
'On the other hand, the analyst notes, the PlayStation 3 looks poised for a strong holiday, with 21 percent of survey respondents planning to buy the console this Christmas. The number's slightly below the 26 percent planning to buy Wiis, but nearly double the 12 percent planning to buy an Xbox 360.
The survey data also shows that 32 percent of PlayStation 2 owners who haven't yet bought a current generation plan to buy a PS3, versus just 9 percent for the Xbox 360. Could Sony's faith in brand loyalty be about to pay off?'
Surveys, Predictions etc etc.Your just guessing people.Until the figures are in, it`s just all speculation and even when they are in, what difference will it make? All 3 working on next Gen.Hardware, All 3 got fantastic games. We have the luxury of choice, why do sites devote so much space to these stories?
I mean, hell i`m gonna have a shot:
There`s a very strong chance this afternoon i`ll fire up the PS3, But then maybe i won`t, maybe i`ll decide it`s gonna be the 360,.Or maybe i`ll go watch a film, go out, stay in, etc etc.
World`s still gonna be turning, what ever i decide.
I admit it's initall £469 asking price was a joke but now that the PS3 only costs £250 or even less if you can live with not getting a PS3 slim it's far and away the best value system of the three. All you people moaning that it costs too much should hark your memory back to the early 90's , remember how much the Amiga 500 cost or the how much the SNES cost in their heyday, remember paying £65 for Goldeney on the N64? Exactly now shut up about the PS3 price tag. I'm a miserable penny pinching, Scot who's married with a young child and I find the price reasonable for crying out loud.
Not only is it a games console that doesn't force you to use proprietry peripherals (such as ridiculously overpriced hard drives)or charge £40 for online access. I'm not saying PSN is better it's not but it is free. In addition to being a games console the PS3 is a blu ray player and a super audio cd player, as well as a web browser and if you have an older system you can run Linux on it legitimately without voiding the warranty It has wifi capability integrated (as opposed to £60 for the 360 dongle) and it gets the BBC iplayer. Granted not all of these features will appeal to everyone but the fact is as an all round entertainment system the PS3 trounces the competitors hardware.
The difference in the quality of the games is also evident in Sonys exclusive titles. Because the 360 and the wii don't have onboard HDD's (remember the HDD is an "add on" for the 360), it means the scope of the games being made is limited to the space on the physical media, in this case DVD's with roughly 8gb of space to play with. The PS3 on the otherhand ships with a hard drive as standard irrespective of the model in question and blu ray discs can store up to 25gb which allows developers much more scope for complicated game mechanics, graphical fidelity and the overall scope and size of the games.
The 360 may win out this year but it may very well be it's last hurragh as games development continues to evolove beyond the limited capabilities of it's now aging hardware and software api's
Spot on Comments about the pricing.Back in the day? I paid £270 for the Sega Mega-CD and that was just an Add-on and £229 for an Atari Jaguar.
Neither the wisest investments as far as gaming went, but really puts just how much of a bargain the consoles out at the moment are by comparison.
add to that list panasonic 3DO and sega saturn launch.not to mention neo geo catridges...
Oh Hell yeah.what was UK Saturn Launch price?£400 and IF you did`nt have a Scart TV you had to buy an RF lead.
Also Commodore CDTV. to be added to list.
I had a sega 32X what a waste of cash that was!!
To think how much my ps3 can do i think its a bargin!
i'm not sure what the conditions are for gaming in the UK (console pricing, console features, release dates, etc.) so it's certainly possible for a 3-to-1 360/PS3 ratio. it is, however, still just one market. i've always been less interested in isolated market sales, and more interested in worldwide sales, where fortunes have been tic-for-tac for both the PS3 and the 360. the PS3 has enjoyed a comfortable lead in Japan since it launched, and recently the tide seems to have turned in its favor over here in the US as well. worlwide it'll definitely be an interesting battle this holiday, and perhaps even more interesting in Q1 '10, where a number of high-profile exclusives come out for both systems.
The 360 has handidly outsold the PS3 in the western markets every year since the PS3's release this year won't be any different. Price means quite a bit even when we're not in a recession but even more so now. This isn't news.
The 360 has handidly outsold the PS3 in the western markets every year since the PS3's release this year won't be any different.
Well, that wouldn't be hard considering the 360 was released a full year before the PS3 and at a lower price point.
Saying that, the 360 is losing sales all over the world to the PS3 since the price cut, in fact the PS3 has been out selling the 360 in the US since it's price cut.
Also, i think MS should be more concerned about getting a reliable system out there, nevermind banging on about sales.
Anyway, most of those sale come from folk that are on there 2nd/3rd/4th/5th or 6th 360, hence buying replacements.
By Western Markets you mean N/A and the UK and by handily you mean by not a great deal and by this year won't be any different you mean it's certainly going to be too close to call in N/A at least?
I'm not sure what your point is. N/A and UK represent nearly 60% of worldwide sales, so the fact that 360 has an 8+ million install base advantage in those territories would be considered a big deal by most industry observers.
There will be a new MS console probably in 2011, and definitely no later than 2012, and even if PS3 finally starts equaling 360 sales in those territories from this point forward there is no way it will ever close that gap. You're also conveniently forgetting that 360 is better positioned for additional price drops, which will increase this gap even further when MS decides to play that hand again.
The significance of those numbers is that it means the vast majority of developers will continue to lead with 360 development and that 360 will see more third-party exclusives as a result. It also means MS' gaming division should continue to enjoy quarterly profits while Sony's division will struggle to break even.
MS' gaming division should continue to enjoy quarterly profits
Yeah, quarterly profits that make only a miniscule dent in their insane Xbox spending spree. Some real captains of industry over there at Xbox HQ, LOL. 'Let's see how many billions we can blow on the next console generation!'
You're ignoring both the cost of the special warranty, MS have not made back the money they've sunk into the XBOX division, and the fact that everyone in the hardware side of the industry has said that the next gen isn't going to start for a long time. Natal is part of that strategy. The PS3 is catching up, fast.
This generation is weird, The 360 feels old coming out Christmas 2005 and the PS3 was released march 2007 and the 360 is not even leading by 10 million worldwide.
The real WINNER this generation is Nintendo no question about it. PS3 European and Japanese sales will offset any lagging sales UK sales. Then again when PS3 hits the magic £199 price mark the sales will through the roof i think.....
The 3:1 seems overly high didn't the analyst say this Christmas the PS3 will come out on top, It has been out sold the 360 since the price drop well in North America and Japan anyway....
Here's my take on it: I only buy console exclusives, for everything else i buy on the PC.
I've got more titles for my PC, than my consoles.
Hmm... dunno, i get the sense the PS3 will surpass the 360 this xmas.... not sure why, just things seem to be swinging in its favour with its recent and future games line up, slim release, price cuts and sony finally getting the damn thing advertised with reasonably sensible adverts and getting 'available on ps3' tacced on to the end of game commercials.
Cant help but think 360 sales are boosted by its epic fail rate, not a massive boost... but still it is helping, a bit like it did with the ps2...
Then again, i guess microsofts vocal mumblings about finally getting round to adding facebook and the whole Sky thing is a biiig boost.
Does it really matter which sell`s more? Most of us have decided which or indeed both consoles we want and i`d much rather be playing games on them than worrying about who sold more in one region over the xmas period.
Before you know it the next wave of hardware will be on us and the pointless VS debate`s will start up all over again.
Can people not just enjoy the fact that gamers have never had it so good?.Unless you work for the hardware manufacturers, i really cannot fathom why everyone gets so moist about these stories, you`d think they were doing a Sega and getting out of the hardware business.
That's a fair point Vulture. Who really cares about sales predictions? Sell the consoles, then let the backslapping and the self congratulations commence.
If you're lucky enough to find a next gen console under the tree this year, you're a winner! If you already own one (or two) you're a winner! It doesn't make a whole lot of difference how much money these big companies are making this christmas, 2010 is going to be a big year for games regardless of the system you choose.
What is vitally important that the gaming community continues to grow and gamers continue to get enjoyment from their investments, this christmas and into the future, no console this generation will fail, if that were the case, they would have done so already.
I own both. Bought PS3 1st, then 360 for games i could`nt get on PS3.Lucky enough to be in full time employment and to be able to afford both.Nobody from either company came round with an award for buying another of their products. Both just as happy to take my cash.
IF i was employed in a marketing dept for either and our department had just pumped our entire budget into an xmas push which did sweet F.A for sales over xmas and as a result? Jobs were on the line come the new year, then yes, i`d be sweating a little as to which sold more. But i`m not, i`m a gamer. As long as both machines are going strong, i can safely sit back, knowing that competition is essential to keep the gaming scene strong.
Remove a major player, run the risk of stagnant gaming-IF that happens, all the sales figures in the world won`t stop boredom setting in.People like myself leaving the scene.
When PS4 And next Gen. Xbox appear and we are being told the big HD TV we forked out for on PS3/360 just is`nt gonna cut it, in the world of Super 3D HD, i`m gonna be thinking..How the hell can afford that?.Not..boy i`m glad i bought a machine that sold X amount more than console Y.
Remove a major player, run the risk of stagnant gaming
Respectfully disagree with you there. IMO if we moved onto a single format the software would arguably increase in quality because the software developers would be competing with each other to ensure it was their game we purchased. gran turismo vs forza motorsport as an example would be a real battle for quality with the respective devs competing for the same userbase with the only real winners being us the players. I think a single format would be a good thing.
I don't think so. The major problem with this is that the big 3 will not agree on hardware. Sony has far superior hardware and their OS/firmware using bluetooth and a DRM-free hard-drive is something M$ would never agree to. AND the fact it runs on linux. M$ will never allow their products to run on linux. M$ does have a superior online service but without the constant challenge from Sony they have no motivation to improve it. Their DRM-laden concepts are very much in the wrong direction.
ALSO:
I think the 3 each do a better job of working within their own constraints.
Agreed somewhat in the short term, however if there was no competition then said sole company wouldnt release another console, they nearly always make a loss for the first 5+ years and are a massive gamble.
Another problem would be funding, alot of top notch games are that way because they have had extra funding from Sony or MS to make them exclusives
Variety is the spice of life and competition is ALWAYS good from a consumer perspective.
Don't say anything about a newer TV, I only just got my 1080p unit this weekend! Personally I am going to get a PS3 mainly for the games like the last Guardian and Demon Souls, but like you say its not what you buy, its that you buy anything at all and support the game developers. They are the ones with the tighter margins than the manufacturers (although I think Sony had it pretty bad financially this year), and whatever console you have, buying the software is what really matters for the industry.
I think you will be fine for TVs for now, the next new TV 'thing' will either be the 4x HD that already exists but isn't even close to being adopted yet, or 3D which will only happen if they can get past the glasses thing and will hopefully be the inward type 3d rather than the 'coming outta the screen' type 3D
this is a bloody weird console generation!
Xmas 2009 for the 360 is equivalent to Xmas 2004 for the PS2 - and even at the time it felt like the last hurrah for the PS2 before moving into it's twilight years.
This generation still feels like it has only just begun...
3:1 is a ridiculously ambitious figure....
PS3 is still waaaay to expensive. 360 will beat it, but probably by less than 3:1.
I won't even consider buying a PS3 until it hit's £130-150,
that or else they bring back backward compatibility.
Can`t see backward compatibility happening. They`d rather we buy the HD remakes like God of war( Ico and Shadow of the Col. Rumored) or DL stuff from PSN. More money for them then.
I think you're being unrealistic about the price, doubt if you'll see the price of PS3 down that low until nearing the end of the generation or unless something tragic happens and it all goes Sega.
Backward compatibility maybe returning in Q1 2010.. it was mentioned in a leaked report a couple of months back.
The 360 is always in amazon.co.uk's top 5 chart (in video games) while the ps3 is rarely in the top 100. We will have to see if that maps to other retailers though.
Piss off fanboy! No one here cares what you think.
Go and look on amazon, i'm not lying, ps3 is not in the top 100.
Woah, knee jerk reaction?! Chill bud, this is an article concerning sales numbers, it's ok.
Theres no need for that, jb1's comment was relevant.
If you want to discredit their statement in a mature manner you could counter act it by disproving the statement using facts.
Lets try and stay pleasant
3:1 doesn't sound very realistic, but I would have no trouble believing close to 2:1. PS3 got an obvious boost from the recent price drop, but that was likely temporary and should not change the trajectory of this generation appreciably in the long term.
Wii will be the clear front runner, followed by a respectable showing from 360 and disappointing (from Sony's perspective) third place finish from PS3. More importantly, Playstation will probably be the only brand out of those 3 which fails to make a profit this generation.
The 360 will be last, also all systems will have reached profit by the end of this, longer than normal, gen. BTW MS isn't making a profit on the 360 hardware, they have extraordinary costs to write against the business to cover the extra cost of the warranty extension.
All three systems are still too expensive in the UK. The PS3 should really be around £169.99, the 360 w/HDD at £129.99 and the Wii at £89.99.
The prices of the systems will come down and those who benefit are the ones that wait.
In fact, i've got a bunch of friends that wait until a generation is over before buying the systems of that generation ending. It's a smart way to game because a) you get the system cheap as chips and b) pricing on the software goes way, way down.
First time purchasers are the real suckers!
This is brilliant!
I play a console game (or watch media on that console) around 20 hours a week. If I just wait until the end of the middle of the 10 year hardware cycle (when the next get comes out) I can get my hardware at a steep discount, saving around $300 (that's high, but for the sake of argument, let's go with it). So now, let's divide that savings by the time spent on the console and figure out how much i save per hour of entertainment. 52 weeks a year...X 20 hours a week...let's just say a 1000 hours a year to keep it simple. Multiply by 5...and get the hours spent on the console during its' "current generation"....5000. $300 / 5000 = .06 exactly.
So there ya' have it! All you suckers out there are spending an additional .06 for every hour you spend using your console....WHAT A BUNCH OF FOOLS!!!
By 'What a bunch of fools' i take it you mean grown adults who are more than capable of deciding when and on what to spend our money, having carefully weighed up the pro`s and cons of any purchase and making an informed decision based on these?.
Yes, an excellent idea, you get to play games 5 years after they were first released, entirely miss out on the online for most of them, and struggle to find the rest in the first place. Why on earth did I buy the consoles from this generation, when i could wait and have those advantages!
Perhaps the sarcasm in my comments was not as obvious to all as I anticipated...
Haha, i got the sarcasm dont worry.
Halo might be better 5 years down the line, once all the idiots have moved onto Halo Reach. In fact Halo 2 has quite a pleasant community, if i bit low on the ground
