SCEE claims that nearly two million players have joined the LittleBigPlanet community.
In the five months since its release, SCEE says the game has been played around 125 million times, while around 725,000 levels have been built by users, all collectively seeing some four million comments.
Sadly SCEE has offered no elaboration on the numbers it flaunts. For now, there’s no knowing if the figure of 125 million plays comes straight from the community records, or if the community stats are used to estimate a bigger picture with offline users.
Also, little is known about what entails ‘joining the LittleBigPlanet community’; whether that means two million users have played a level online, searched through the catalogue of user-made levels, or simply have allowed the game to access the internet.
What’s clear is that SCEE wants to put behind it the teething problems it had with the LBP community, as numerous player-made levels have been deleted from LittleBigPlanet’s servers due to potential copyright issues. SCEE now says that many of the user-generated levels are “inspired” by films, TV shows and games titles.
“LittleBigPlanet is giving people from every walk of life the opportunity to express themselves creatively. The game is just the start,” says Mark Hardy, European Marketing Director of Content and Platforms at SCEE. “This is Creative Gaming; never ending experiences that take on lives of their own through their players.”
LittleBigPlanet continues to take awards and honours. After winning the prize for game of the year at the Edge Awards, the title went on to receive a remarkable eight awards at this year's DICE Summit.
I see no definite correlation between a game being a AAA blockbuster hit and a game being really good, so unless you are dissing my vested financial interest in the game in question, knobs who use game sales as a means of denigration make me rofl. Sure they often pair up but there are loads of amazing games with not so amazing sales, and there are lots of mediocre games with massive sales. LittleBigPlanet deserves a wider community and I think if they went multiplatform they would have a massive community. I don't know if LBP is planning on further iterations but if the 'fanboys' want to keep this one exclusive they'll need to start opening there minds to this game. However the sales are still decent and the online community is massive (enough for me at least, I just can't keep up with all the stuff in that game), everyday there are new levels and people utilising the engine in different ways. Definitely inspiring.
This game is awesome and its one of those slow burners I think. It's a shame some of the less adventurous gamers take cheep pot shots at what is one of the most innovative games to be produced on any platform for years. OK so it's hasn't sold the in same numbers or patterns as the mindless shooters like Halo or Killzone but it still doesn't take away from how bloody ace this game is.
It deserves ever 10 and every award.
The cheep shots happen because you actually have to play it to enjoy it instead of looking at some things online and typing in your comments before the 1:30 minute clip of the game even finishes.
And you really don't have to build stuff yourself if you don't have the time either - you can also just log into the community and see what others have created... Last night, I tried out all the "rollercoaster rides" this guy had put up, a recreation of Contra and some other small things... and as usual, it was fun.
"SCEE says the game has been played around 125 million times"
So, the 125 people that actually bought it have played it a million times each?
Well at least there are no surprises there. Did anyone expect LBP to recive any less awards? But honstly SCEE is flaunting its numbers. After all its just advertising.
