Sony's PSP and PS3 have both outsold the competition in Japan for a second week running, according to data provided by Media Create.
Total handheld and home console sales for the week ending March 15, however, had fallen sharply; down 21 percent to reach 141,775 combined unit sales.
The PSP sits ahead of the pack with 43,463 sales; a sharp fall from last week's performance which saw the handheld move nearly 60,000 units. The same story is true for the PS3; it holds second and still manages to outsell the DSi, yet sales fell by nearly 12,000 units.
Nintendo's DSi managed to shift just 27,564 units – a new low for the system – yet the DS Lite enjoyed a slight sales increase from the week prior.
Nintendo's Wii saw slight gains from the week prior, climbing over one thousands sales to reach 17,941 units sold.
Microsoft’s Xbox 360, meanwhile, was hit by the heaviest fall in sales; down from 15,000 to 8,378.
Full list for the week ending March 15 according to Media Create:
PSP/ 43,463
PS3/ 28,014
DSI/ 27,564
Wii/ 17,941
DS Lite/ 11,571
Xbox 360/ 8,378
PS2/ 4,844

2009 Japanese sales history.
Japan just isn't doing well right now. The economy is poor in Japan, too.
Playstation 3 has sold very poorly in Japan. It's nice to see that the PS3 is starting to do better over there. The fact that the Wii is not doing nearly as well as it used to so many weeks in a row proves Nintendo needs to finally drop the price.
Why are all of you replying to a spam program? Besides, I think he got deleted.
It didn't stop you coming back D-FORCE after you were banned for duplicate accounts and abusing other posters, did it?
I'm no longer the old D-FORCE who is anti-xbox 360, but i can be anti-ArronCO7 if you want.
I'm shitting myself.
No comment on Xbox 360 sales in Japan Kim? How uncharacteristic. Are you turning over a new leaf?
I think his bosses told him to sound less fake and less biased so he doesn't keep getting kicked from sites like these. I'll be amazed the one day he actuallyy responds to a direct comment. Then, and only then will I believe he's not an employee (just a super biased fanboy of the likes that have never been seen).
Maybe he (or she for all we know......it?) is nothing more then a piece of software that prints comments? Oh, the mystery of Kim_Naroz, so tantilizing.
What came first the Naroz or the Picard?
Who cares about Picard?
My money is on the guy that can travel warp 9

I'm not sure why the DS Lite and DSi are reported seperately. Are they not 2 different iterations of the same handheld? Would that be like reporting console sales broken down by, say, hard drive size?
So they can show DSlite and DSi in smalles numbers, ..you realize is not the same with PSP2000 and PSP3000 ..
NDS should be jsut NDS, just as PSP..
Agreed
DSi has DSiWare, which the Lite can't run, so there is more of a reason to separate that than the PSP 2000 and 3000.
So, you qualify having access to an online apps store to qualify as reason to be excluded from one another?
I'd say the ability to run different games is sufficient reason.
By not having a hard drive in it, does that not mean the Xbox 360 Arcade can't play certain games that an Xbox 360 model with a hard drive can?
There's only one game that I'm aware of that is as you describe and that's Final Fantasy XII. NXE doesn't run without some form of removable memory either but that's a different discussion I think.
There's a handful of live arcade games that won't fit on a memory card, FFXI (not 12), and the multiplayer aspect of Burnout and Halo (in some respects) won't work without an HDD. It's probably less than 10 total. Very small percentage. MS doesn't really allow it.
A small percentage. But, there ARE games playable on some models and not others. Despite how small the percentage is, it DOES exist. I'm taking your word here, as I know nothing on the subject.
Also, I would imagine, as of right now, the DSi store probably has virtually no DSiware games, in which case there would be even fewer games not inter-playable on both models, then the 360. I'm sure that'll change in the future, but as of right now.....
It is a small percentage but it seems as though MS as of late has lifted their restrictions on XBLA games (the recent release of an NCAA game on live arcade clocked in at 1.5 gigs). EA is also releasing Battlefield 1943 (a remake of the classic PC FPS) on PSN and XBLA and I'm pretty sure that game will clock in well over the memory capacity of the Xbox memory cards. I don't think they want these games releasing on PSN with higher quality or released solely on PSN when MS and many others consider Xbox live the leader in the online arena. I agree that the DS and DSi should be coupled together cosidering that 99% of the games will play on both just fine (I believe anyway).
I think it's in Xbox's interest to make all games playable on all version of the 360, and it is good to see that only a small percentage can't. That will lead to far less confusion amongst less "knowledgeable" gamers.
There are currently 16 DSi Ware games.
16 titles is somewhat close to, as Nick has stated, roughly fewer then 10 games that the different versions of Xbox can and can't play respectively. As a result, on the basis of different games being available for each version of the platform, if that is the criteria for DS vs. DSi, i believe it should also be reported seperately for Xbox Arcade vs. Xbox Elite, as both have a measurable amount of games that can work on one iteration, and not the other. Otherwise, all versions of each platform should be measured together.
You can almost argue that the stock out-the-box arcade unit with it's 125 mb (roughly after NXE) available memory actually isn't enough for quite a few games now. I guess maybe the availability of the 256mb and 512mb memory cards a lot of those live arcade games that are 126mb and over ARE playable on an arcade unit but you're forced to buy extra accessories to play them. If the DS somehow had an accessory that would allow it to play DSi games would they then be categorized together?
Did a bit of research, there's 20+ games that require the purchase of a 256mb, 512mb, and even the 20gig HDD in order to play them. I stopped counting when I hit 20 so I'm not sure really how many XBLA titles are 126mb or over but it's surprisingly quite a few. That coupled with the handful of retail games that require the HDD you're looking at near 30 games that won't work on the arcade unit out the box.
Wow, that's a large amount of research you did there Nick. Thanks, 'cause lord knows I sure wouldn't have had the patience. To be honest, I probably wouldn't even know where to look.
Well, I don't know if Alex considers "out-of-the-box" playability or not part of the equation but, me personally, I would say, despite having to buy accessories, you CAN play the games on the Arcade, so I guess they COULD be counted as working on both systems. But, as you pointed out earlier, NIck, there are a few games that can't be played on the Arcade without something as simple as buying and inserting a memory card, so I would think they would then have to be counted seperately.
Also, since some versions of PS3s have backwards compatability and some do not, do THOSE have to be counted seperately, due to the fact PS2 games can or can't be played on them?
I guess there's a lot of factors to consider. I say just categorize all the consoles' different versions as one as that would be the most simple. Should the launch, falcon, and jasper units of the 360 be counted seperately as well? They have different power cables that consume less amps and wattage? And as you mentioned, the different PS3s with different BC, missing memory card ports, etc. It just seems strange that the DS seems to be the only console that gets seperated like that. Really, it doesn't make any sense.
Glad i'm not alone.
What are all these people doing with their PSPs? Why are they buying them? There seems to be about 2 decent games a year, if that. Software developers seem to have completely ignored it over the last 2 years. As a gaming platform, it's like a dead duck.

Go big S! The tides will turn globally soon. There is lots of genuinely great Sony exclusive title on the way. Sony pwns 09
"Sony pwns 09"
Naa...maybe in Japan, and that's even a stretch. '08 ring any bells?
A stretch indeed... After the ACC/FXIII demo bundle, it's pretty much a wrap. It's the slew of back-to-back key releases causing the PS3 to have higher than usual numbers - when that stops, the numbers will dip.
That's the trick, isn't it? Keep the games coming so sales don't drop.
