UK Shadow Cabinet Minister Edward Vaizey has again backed the British videogame industry.
The Conservative MP and Shadow Minister for Arts had tabled an early day motion for debate in Westminster to note the “importance of the videogames sector to the UK economy.”
Specifically, Vaizey congratulated Media Molecule, Codemasters and Lionhead Studios for representing the UK at this year’s videogame BAFTA ceremony and coming away with their awards.
Vaizey – whose recent interview with Edge can be found here – said he applauded BAFTA’s recognition of the “continued success and significance of video games”, before turning attentions to Brown’s Labour government, whom Vaizey believes have shown a “complete lack of support” for the industry.
“This lack of support from Government has seen the UK fall from being the third largest producer of video games in the world to the fifth largest,” he said, urging the Government to “devise a clear and supportive strategy for the UK video games sector as part of the Digital Britain review.”

Has there been any clear statement from Vaizey (or, indeed, any of the current crop of self-important political porn-dodgers) on what his lot would actually do if elected? Exactly what kind of "clear and supportive strategy" would the Conservative's initiate? Seriously. Have any of the political parties made any effort to give a clear commitment to helping boost the industry, or is everyone still just happy to associate themselves with winners to try to boost their own profiles, while at the same time promising precisely narf-all?
I'm guessing the latter.
Please, someone prove me wrong in a good way.
Edward Vaizey is, of course, absolutely right to back the UK games industry. It's one the few remaining high-tech industries that this country still has a decent stake in and it would be a catastrophic shame if talented developers packed up and went elsewhere through lack of support.
