A surprising week in UK sales has seen Sega’s newest PC title, Empire: Total War, overtake Killzone 2 and climb to the top of the all format charts.

Not since October 2007 has a PC-exclusive title risen to the top of the all-format charts. Back then, Sega’s Football Manager 2008 managed to push aside the competition, this time The Creative Assembly’s newest RTS - also published by Sega - has achieved the feat.

Killzone 2 now lies in second place after a debut week at the top as sales of the high-profile FPS have understandably taken a heavy drop from the launch frenzy. Weekly unit turnover fell 58 percent, leaving it a mere 1,600 units behind Total War.

Microsoft’s Halo Wars, however, is stung by a similar sales decline (down 54 percent) and falls from second to fifth. Street Fighter IV falls even further, reeling from a 59 percent sales slump that drops it to seventh.

In this context, Nintendo will once again be delighted with the sales performance of Wii Fit. Just weeks ago the title had been dominating the UK charts, before Street Fighter IV and Killzone 2 each took the lion’s share of sales. Today, Chart Track reports that the game has enjoyed a sales jump of 31 percent. The blanace-board-bundled title returns to third, and there’s a chance it could sit higher next week.

Nintendo’s other recent flyer, Professor Layton and the Curious Village, sees a 12 percent rise in sales yet falls one place to sixth.

As they have for the last three months, FIFA 09 and Call of Duty: World At War continue to stand toe-to-toe. This week both saw sales decline by 7 percent, and both fell one place.

Ubisoft’s latest – Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X – debuts in fourth, while D3P’s Ben 10: Alien Force enters the charts in tenth.
