Nintendo claims that the sales figures of Wii Play and Wii Remotes demonstrate the console’s strength as a “social hub”.
The platform holder, responding to February’s NPD data, states that sales of Wii Play have passed ten million units. Yet Cammie Dunaway, NOA executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, also commented on what is accepted as the main reason why Wii Play sells so consistently well:
“Even if you believe people are buying Wii Play solely for the controller,” she said, “that indicates that there are now more than 10 million people who have an extra Wii Remote controller in their homes.”
Dunaway went on to say that some 12.7 million Wii Remotes have also been sold, meaning that for all the 45 million Wii consoles sold, an extra 23 million controllers have been purchased along with the system.
“This reinforces the growing ‘social gaming’ trend we have been seeing where friends and family use their Wii games as a social hub – both in person and online,” Dunaway added.
They probably even bought an extra light gun for Granny for multi-player HOTD: Overkill.
I think the original story has a misunderstanding. I believe Mrs. Dunaway is disclosing Wii Play and Wii Remote Controllers sales data for US. So 23m Wiimotes in total could be interpreted as a social gaming hub when compared with the US Wii HW sales. If the sales data were to be global then the platform would not even have 1 Wii to 2 Wiimotes ratio. I would reccomend that the story gets a doublecheck.
or Dummie Canaway, it's because so many have been broken by being thrown at LCD tvs
Why is it that idiotic comments like this are allowed on this article but I can't post something similarly caustic (but much smarter and funnier, natch) on "Xbox 360 Sells 391K in Feb?"
Oh, that's right: EDITORIAL BIAS.
Edge is biased against Xbox 360 or in favour of Nintendo?
Huh?
You got it exactly backwards.
Really?
Really?
How so? Edge 200 half the titles in the top 10 games we should play now are on Nintendo platforms or from Nintendo.
Apples and oranges.
Then explain it to me.
