As the Nintendo Wii loses out to the PS3 for a second successive month in Japan, the Kyoto-based company has assured that the Wii’s current downturn in sales is not a genuine concern.

Data released by Enterbrain shows that the PS3 sold a total of 87,000 units in February, with the Wii shifting 76,000.

For March, the PS3 sold 116,000 units while the Wii sold far less, in fact fewer than the month prior, at around 70,000 units.

These figures encapsulate Media Create’s weekly sales data, which now shows the PS3 ahead on a regular basis, although signs of the downturn were reported by Edge back in early February, and signs of a decline in interest could be seen back in November last year.

Despite the console selling at its slowest rate since launching in 2006, a Nintendo spokesperson in Japan has played down any concerns surrounding the system, explaining to the FT that “it is still the first few months of the year when sales are slow for the industry so we are not particularly concerned.”

“We hope to line up strong software to support hardware sales in the second half of the year,” the spokesperson added.
