Sony has no plans to drop the price of the PS2 in the UK.

An SCEE spokesperson confirmed the news to Edge following SCEA’s announcement that the nine year-old system would see a $30 price drop in North America.

SCEE did state that from April 1 the PS2 will see a €30 price reduction in Europe, taking the cost of the console to €100. “However, there are currently no plans to cut the price of PS2 in the UK,” a spokesperson said.

When the EU price drop comes into effect, the RRP difference between EU and UK consoles will be negligible. The UK PS2 RRP is at £95 and, at the time of going to press, €100 is the equivalent of £93.

A further UK price cut would, in fact, disrupt the price parity; something that many European Playstation fans can only just begin to appreciate. That being said, the consistent PS2 RRP across the entire EU comes at a time when the pound is remarkably weak.

“Playstation 2 transformed the games and entertainment industry,” said David Reeves, President and CEO of SCEE.

“We are now into Playstation 2’s tenth year and consumer demand remains strong throughout much of [Europe],” he added. “This RRP revision will help to ensure that Playstation 2 remains a key part of the entertainment market place for some time to come.”

Good news for all those who still want a PS2. It's a quality system. In terms of the mark down in the UK, they couldn't be much cheaper, so no real need. It's at a price where everybody who still wants one will have the chance of owning one. Worth getting one just for Persona4 IMO.

My version 4 PS2 is so clogged with dust now that I worry that it's going to freak out on me. Although with 140million sold worldwide I don't doubt that they'll be any shortage of spares. Time will tell if the PS3 will be as popular.

With regards to PS3 price drop.. Sony are a business!! That's the price they are asking for their product, so you'll either have to save you pennies or buy a cheaper second hand model. I'd like Porsche Cayman. I can't afford one, but I'm Jumping up and down and demanding a price cut isn't going to get me one.

Yeah but it's got to a point where the price is detrimental to PS3's success. Quite obviously so.
Seems like Sony plain and simple can't afford a cut - they will just have to rough it and give up more ground to 360 until they can afford it.

Why cant they cut the price of PS3? Its ridiculously pricey for something that isnt astonishly amazing. Youd have thought being oer £200 more that its main competators (Nintendo Wii, DS and DSi, Xbox 360) it would be far better better than them but rarely is.
After PS2 came out the PS2 quickly made it obsolete, the PS3 is showing no signs of doing that cos no one can afford it so everyonekeeps their perfectly good PS2. PS2 has really good graphics (playing Need For Speed at first I couldnt tell if it was good graphics or actors) and PS3 has a few added features for over £200 more. They added a load of stuff but for games fans you dont care about all that you just wanna play games right?

Dude the PS3 is so worth the extra money it's just tight arses like you wont pay for it.

I'm surprised this wasn't a face-palm from you. Mind you he does have a point in there - the PS3 is expensive now and it is getting to a stage where the price hike (compared to the 360) is simply no longer justifiable for most on-the-fence consumers.

I've always wondered why the UK (and the rest of Europe) have such loyalty to the PlayStation brand when Sony clearly hates you. ;)

Isn't the loyalty the reason that games companies don't have to lower the price? The biggest thing that the companies can bank on is their fans. See also: Nintendo price rise. Microsoft was being aggressive in cutting the price last year, but I hope no one thinks it was motivated by the love of its customers rather than a different business strategy...

Shouldn't they be trying to encourage people to migrate to the PS3?... oh, hold on, they stripped PS2 emulation from the PS3.

Everything they do this generation seems to whiff of not-quite-good-enough.
