Microsoft’s NXE update will soon be bundled onto the discs of upcoming Xbox 360 titles.
Any game disc that features the NXE installer will not play unless users accept the update command; whereby the update will run if users still have the blade dashboard system in place.
The first two games that will have the update installers loaded onto their discs are Tom Clancy: H.A.W.X and MLB: 2K9, with other titles expected to follow suit.
Microsoft’s plan is to ensure that every 360 owner does away with its old dashboard interface and moves onto NXE; the platform holder is no longer applying any updates or security measures for the blades service.
I heard this described as an anti-piracy measure, or something to thwart modders. Something to do with the goofy way they partition these NXE-laden discs...?
At least the article doesn't try to pretend it's something they're doing for the benefit of their customers, because in typical Microsoft fashion it definitely is not.
Hello Dubs, I did actually hear something about this whole shebang being about piracy, any links?
Oh and don’t most companies put a positive spin on measures they bring in for their own benefit? Common sense, no?
Of course the update comes with the discs you goofs. For 1, the story says it does, and 2, if you're connected to live already the update is mandatory. So, to include the update with those two games can only mean it's on the disc (for the people who don't have xbox live and who haven't picked up a new 360 that already has the update installed).
And Saint, I think you're being a bit unfair. I agree that the NXE isn't great (I prefer the simpler blades) it did offer new features (a party system, Netflix, photo party, your xbox will tell you when you turn a game on if you have friends playing that game or not, among a few other smaller features). Also, you can set your 360 up to not go straight to the disc when you boot up, you can have it go to the disc, the dashboard, or even Windows media center if you so desire. You can also set it up to where when you close the tray with a movie/game/data cd in it it doesn't boot it up until you click "play". So if you want to close the tray but aren't ready to play right away or you're doing something on the dashboard it won't interrupt what you're doing. As far as the avatars go? They could have left that out if you ask me.
Well, that is a long list of micro features. The only one I can say I ever use is the disc delay thing. Hence the harshness, I guess. Also, brits don’t get Netflix as far as I know. I guess I only use the 360 for playing games, mostly offline.
Yeah, they are micro features. Netflix is really the only major addition other than the lame Avatars. I can give you that.
Couldn't give less of a dang about this. Am the only one who only sees NXE for a few seconds while my disc spins up to speed? Not exactly as extraordinary as EDGE made it out to be, is it.
So does the Update come with the game? I know some people don't have live and cant log on
That would be my guess. It really wouldn't be that hard to include the update on game discs that require this version.
I might well be a firmware update... You may not need a live account, that probably the point of why Microsoft have taken this tactic.. Of course I'm only speculating.
The update disc also includes the new Service Fcked 345 for Windows Vista.
Fair enough. Presumably there are going to be disc based games that use avatars. And getting avatar clothing as a gaming reward probably loses some of it's a appeal if your on the old blades system.
I'd just as soon keep my 360 Mii-free. There are many nicer things they could have copied from the Wii that would have been nice.
