that's depressing then. ;-( bad enough that call of duty DLC tops the list among all the other better PSN stuff, but flower as well? flower is so mediocre and over-rated. and FFVII.. so people are buying the same game they owned 12 years ago instead of something new..

Explain why you consider Flower to be mediocre and over-rated. I actually consider it one of the better games of 2009. The difference with a lot of other games: it's actually relaxing. Of course, like so many others, I beat the game the same night I bought it... but that's not the point as I keep occasionally playing it... and experiencing the same feeling all over again.

sorry. should have explained.

mm.. well, my negative reaction is more with the small group of people who over-hyped it calling it 'best game ever' or 'the most emotional and beautiful game'. i'm like damage control, grounding my thoughts rather than getting carried away. i just thought it was crude, manipulative, and restrictive. crude because it wasn't subtle, because it bashed the player over the head with "cities and public transport = evil!" and "flowers and fields are like sunshine in your mouth". just crude storytelling. the style of the graphics are also similar to a washing detergent ad, and jarr horribly with the naturalistc idea of nature as imperfect and naked. it cuts out an idealized image just like TV adverts use to sell a product.
i did enjoy the flying.. flying around was cool, with good sound effects. but it's linearity is not well disguised. i think it should have been more 'free-roaming' because that's how it looks on first appearences.

i just think it's not the real deal, and it's over-rated. there are better indie games so i don't put this on a pedestal and i don't think it's art at all. jenova chen and co. should be grateful but guilty for all the attention they get.

Strange, as I thought the message in Flower was actually subtle enough and didn't bash the player over the head with anything. I wonder where you picked up on the supposed message that cities and (?) public transport were considered bad as there are no actual vehicles in the game to support that. The only "message" I got from this game is the simple statement that industrialization and urbanization are holding nature back and that they are draining the world of its color. In the meantime, there was the mere suggestion of the usage of natural energy sources - windmills - but I got the feeling they were primarily in this game because of their calming aspect and as a way to move the petals. Apart from that, the levels were as open as, say, an area in GTA4 where you get to complete a series of missions before moving onto the next. Of course the scale of this game is a lot smaller - but to me it did not feel that different. Every level represents the dream world (or memory) of the flower sitting in that window serving as the menu of the game and in my opinion, these levels were well-designed and well-balanced.

Regardless, if the game conveyed a stronger message than I picked up on - as you suggest - I do not think this is a bad thing at all. With the constant flow of over-rated games with a more sinister yet equally "crude" violent message, I think game concepts like this are actually needed.
